After installing the CPU, heatsink, Corsair RAM, and graphics card, I ran a test boot outside of the case and go figure, it failed with error code 50. I had the user guide handy so I flipped to all the troubleshooting error codes and found that error 50 was a memory initialization error. So that immediately told me one thing: Either this motherboard is defective or my Corsair RAM is.
After trying all the different DIMM slots on the motherboard, each attempt coming up with error 50, I decided to cough up another 50 bucks to try out one stick of PSY 4GB RAM @1333MHz (Just drove to the local Best Buy for it). Tried that stick in the DIMM2 slot on this motherboard and still came out with error 50.
I even tried updating the UEFI BIOS to version 1602 with the BIOS Flashback feature and still no success.
Then I tried to do a test boot with NO memory installed at all (I should have done this before I went and bought the PSY RAM). And once more, the motherboard came out with error 50 again. This occurred to me as very strange because when there is no memory installed, the LED display on the motherboard should have given me a different error code. However, it still came out with error 50.
I called up ASUS technical support once and after going through a few more test boots with different factors (each with the inevitable error 50) they told me that I needed to connect a 4pin EATX connector to the supplemental CPU power connector. At the time, this made sense to me because my monster of a CPU seemed to need the extra power to effectively communicate with the memory. But of course, my non modular power supply didn't have that type of connector, so I went ahead and ordered a 4pin MOLEX to 4pin EATX adapter. It came in two days time.
I tried plugging in supplemental power connector and ran yet another unsuccessful test boot. I was frustrated at this point.
I rang up ASUS support once more and lastly. The next person I spoke with ran me through a few more failed test boots and came to the conclusion that my board was defective and suggested that I get a replacement. Yippee.
And as of the time I post this review (November 17, 2013) this is my story with this motherboard. I have requested a replacement for this board and I am going to head over to the UPS Store this Monday to have them return my defective board free of charge (Thank you Amazon).
But as far as the motherboard appears, I think it looks absolutely incredible. Red and black is my number 1 favorite color scheme and the fact that ASUS makes great motherboards grants the Republic of Gamers my support. And I also liked the start and reset buttons. I know that for older or less fancy motherboards, one would have to short the power pin with ground to start the board, but I found it more convenient to simply press start (even though every time I pressed it, it failed with error 50). And I absolutely love the black and red color scheme as well as the red backlit line between the sound chip and the I/O. Quite simply, the board looks incredible.
When I get my replacement board next week, I will update this review and give my full opinion on it, but as for right now, all I can say is that this board looks like it has a ton of potential. Let's hope that the replacement will not disappoint me.
***UPDATE 11/19/13***
Three days later, the replacement comes in a day earlier than expected! Thanks Amazon for the fast shipping!
I rebuild everything and it STILL gives me error code 50. This leads me to believe something else must be wrong. The CPU perhaps? I'm not really eager to send this CPU back and wait for another replacement, but I will do it one last time. If the replacement CPU does nothing different, I will throw my hands up in the air and say "What a waste of $1,400!" (I spent that much on this whole build)
I shouldn't really change my rating on this motherboard because I no longer believe the motherboard is the issue. I guess I'll leave it at 4 stars until it finally works.
If anyone else has any suggestions, I'm beyond willing to hear them.
***UPDATE 11/25/13***
I am updating my review from my build. You know what that means? I finally made it work! And now I am able to give an honest review.
The old title of this review was "Seems like it has a lot of potential..." And now I can say that it did. It had a ton of potential and I am extremely impressed with it. For a first build, I am proud to say that ASUS's Republic of Gamers took part in this build.
Would I recommend this motherboard? Absolutely. Anyone with a brain should know that this motherboard is absolutely phenomenal, and should expect greatness from ASUS's Republic of Gamers line of products.
***UPDATE 07/11/16***
I've moved on to another ASUS motherboard suited for Intel processors, but I'd like to let my fellow consumers know that this board was completely flawless for me in the time that I had used it (Minus the little issue in my story above). Even after three years, this board is still a solid choice for AM3+ processors.
