- Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2013If you're looking for a very, very good arcade stick, look no further than the Hori RAP VX-SA Kai. I was looking for a new stick to replace my old MadCatz Standard Edition, so I searched around on Amazon and decided on this one after some deliberation. It really came down to this one or one of the newer MadCatz sticks, as I was not only searching for a good stick at the $100-$150 price range, but one I knew I could depend on. I went with this one solely because I really enjoyed the design, not necessarily because I thought this one was 'better' than it's competitors.
The buttons and the stick are all Sanwa and the gate in the joystick is a square gate. For me personally, I don't mind either one, but for others, it might be an issue, but at the very least, you can easily mod this baby and replace gate with an octagonal one if you like. The buttons are spread out pretty well from the stick, so you probably won't feel 'cramped' working it. I'm not sure how easy it is to replace the buttons and art on this, but if you want to do so, remember that you're going to void your warranty.
Now you can't choose to select the crosspad on this stick, as you might have heard (you can only choose between Left Stick or Right Stick), but this has not been a problem for me. I know on the MadCatz sticks, the Left Stick can cause undesired inputs and movement, but I can say with certainty that you will not experience that with this arcade stick. If you were looking for a different stick because of this or if this fact was making you shy away from this one, then again, it's a non issue.
What's really cool about this stick that you can't do on the MadCatz one is shift some of the buttons around. The start button does seem to be awfully close to the other buttons and hitting it on accident and pausing the game can get you disqualified at tournaments. However, you can actually switch the Start and Back buttons on this baby with a lever so Start is at the top and you have no chance of hitting it unless you have gigantic hands or something. You can also switch LB and RB with the Left Stick Button and the Right Stick Button, though I can't imagine why you would want to, as I've had no need to do so. Despite all this, I have never once accidentally hit the Start Button and even unconsciously, it seems you would have a hard time doing so unless, again, you have gigantic fingers or hands.
The VX-SA Kai has a decent weight to it, something I was looking for, as the MadCatz SE had a tendency to fly out of my lap when things got hectic during battle. This one should stay put nicely and it even has pads at the bottom to make sure of it. There are grips on the side too, so the stick is easy to handle and pick up. I thought that was a pretty neat feature, one that isn't necessarily needed, but a novelty I'm enjoying greatly. Finally, you can store the USB cord in a compartment on the top side of the stick, but it's so-so. The compartment should have been bigger. It's not hard to get the whole length of the cord in, but it should have been wider and bigger, like on the MadCatz Cross Tekken sticks, so it would have been easier. A minor complain and my only real one with the stick.
All in all, a pretty great stick. I've been using the RAP VX-SA Kai for a couple of weeks now with no problems. It seems durable enough to last quite awhile, though I have heard the art can begin to come off if you're the type of person that sweats a lot. Other than that, I would most definitely recommend this stick to fighting game fans.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2015I'm sure it's fine for someone else's needs, but it wasn't clear in the description or the photo that it would not meet my needs. Had to send it back.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2013I've owned a few sticks in the last few years... A couple of Madcatz TEs, Eightarcs, and even a couple of other Hori HRAPs. I guess you can say I am a fightstick enthusiast. I've kept a few and have given a few away. When I saw the price drop on the KAI, I figured it was cheap enough to give it a shot.
When I received the HORI KAI, I placed it right next to a TE, an Eightarc, a Hori HRAP EX-SA and a Hori HRAP VX-SA. Now, whether you like Seimitsu or Sanwa is a preferential thing. I like the Sanwa buttons sensitivity and JFL Stick feel. And this stick, like almost all the others on the market, had them both.
I can honestly say that right now the KAI is my preferred stick for UMVC3, SFXT and SSF4AEV2012. It may be that "it's my new toy" effect playing a role, in me saying that, so for the purpose of this review, I will compare it directly to the VX-SA. I must say that compared to the VX-SA, the KAI fightstick out shines its predecessor ever so slightly in many little departments. Although both have great build quality and the quality shines throughout, I guess you could say it's the little things that count and make the KAI a favorite.
1) Visually, once you do your button swaps (nothing wrong with the buttons... Sanwa is Sanwa, just hate the rainbow XBOX button scheme), The Black color and the decals on this stick just look nicer that the VX-SA. Granted, the VX-SA's off-white on off-white was nice and clean, I was a little jealous when I found out the PS3 version of the VX-SA was black. Some may not like the KAI's decals and that's understandable but a quick decal swap and you're all set. Anything I can think of putting on the stick will look nice on the black.
2) The added distance between the KAI's joystick and buttons is welcome. It made the stick feel less "claustrophobic." I had no problems playing on the VX-SA but the KAI's layout just feels a little more natural.
3) The added benefit of being able to disable the Start button is something that almost every other company which makes fightsticks has included on their products. For some reason HORI didn't include this option on the VX-SA. It is widely known that if you go to a tourney and pause accidentally in a match, you forfeit the match and take the loss. HORI decided to include this feature this time around. This little addition makes the stick tournament friendly, Since the start button is right on the front panel, those who "mash" like crazy no longer have to fear pausing the game... just flick the switch and go crazy.
4) Also missing on the VX-SA was being able to switch between the Left and Right analog, though not used often, is something that people complained about. Hori was happy to oblige and include this option on the KAI.
5) Another thing missing on the VX-SA was the ability to swap LB/RB buttons. This is not something that I imagine would be used often, but it's something Hori included on the KAI nonetheless.
6) Eightarc has made it commonplace to have a felt (antiskid) bottom. While Hori didn't include this on the VX-SA, it also has never had this feature in the past... on any Hori stick I know of. That being said, the fact that the KAI has this included is very nice.
7) Something that I don't see many commenting on is the weight. One of the major complaints about the VX-SA was how much of a featherweight it was. I've never had an issue with it, but it was noticeably lighter than the TEs and Eightarcs. With the KAI, it seems Hori might have made the bottom metal plate slightly thicker and it makes the stick feel heftier than the VX-SA. Add to that the antiskid material on the bottom and the stick doesn't even wiggle in the slightest while on your lap (or floor, or table, or stool, Etc).
Compared to the VX-SA of last year, the KAI comes out the winner everyway possible.
However, this feels like Hori playing catch-up after last years snafu (VX-SA). All and all though, now I feel like HORI, with the KAI, have a leg up on the competition. All the features, same buttons and joysticks as the TE and Eightarc, great build quality though still a little lighter... and all for a fraction of the price. For your first stick, you can't go wrong. For a second/backup/something a friend can play on stick, you can't go wrong. Even as a replacement/tourney stick, you can't go wrong. Buy it, love it. I did and I don't regret it one bit.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2013This is a really good arcade stick. Another nice product that will mostly go unnoticed considering how Madcatz has saturated the market. None the less old school Hori Consumers will feel right at home with this one. Sanwa JLF stick with Sanwa face buttons, but u can also easily swap out the parts for modding. The felted bottom is also a nice touch to prevent slipping for those who play on their lap. I would say that this stick is very comparable to the Madcatz SFxT PRO series . It states the stick and buttons are actually spaced a little more from most standard layouts, but even the most hardcore stick users will barely notice it. My only complaints about this stick are: 1) The price point. Hori sticks tend to be a lot more pricey than their competitors for similar products, which is another reason why people may pass on this. And Hori products rarely ever go on sale. 2) This stick is very light (like all Hori Sticks) at just slightly over 4lbs. So if U're looking for something with more heft, this may not be for you. And lastly 3) the cord isn't very long at just under 9.5ft. But some argue that the Madcatz cords at 13ft are too long. Not really a complaint but something to think about if ur debating purchasing this stick. Other than that the stick performs really well and nothing to complaint about in that regard. But if you're planning to buy a new or your first stick, their are cheaper alternatives that perform just as well, maybe better.

Muy buen stick. Cómodo y buena respuesta. No le he notado inputlag. El botón start y el select son intercambiables con una palanca para evitar pausar la partida por accidente.
Andrew CormackReviewed in the United Kingdom on October 19, 20155.0 out of 5 stars One of the best damn made sticks I've ever owned
A wonderful stick.
The default square gate is fine I guess, since all western sticks come with one it does what it does and it's solid, I modded mine with an octo gate (which by the way is SUPER easy to do) and never looked back.
The buttons are a little loud for my tastes but feel great and have no input related issues. The stick itself feels very solid and responsive, no deadzone issues to speak of.
The cable management is great, the compartment for it means you can manage the cable no matter the distance from the device and not have annoying wire dangling everywhere.

Mattia PiroReviewed in Italy on September 6, 20133.0 out of 5 stars Perfetto
Il feeling è esattamente quello della sala giochi. I pezzi sanwa montati all'interno sono molto buoni. Costa troppo, chi produce questi joystick per quanto la loro qualità sia ottima, dovrebbe farli pagare almeno 100 euro in meno.
MrTreatsReviewed in Canada on November 3, 20145.0 out of 5 stars Looks Nice, Plays Nice
Excellent stick, some of my friends own stick costing 30-80 dollars more than this stick and it feels just as good and in some cases better. The buttons are very responsive and feel great, the stick is accurate and responsive. The build is solid with a nice clean color pallette. My only things that might put some people off of it are that it is in Japanese layout, that means you will have to remap your buttons for most games. Also that the door that covers the USB cable pops off really easily, like basically without touching it. Thank fully it's easy to pop back in and not really a big deal while playing. Also this stick uses a square gate, while I'm fine with that others won't be and they'll have to "mod" it.
Craig MaidensReviewed in the United Kingdom on August 17, 20135.0 out of 5 stars Great fight stick
Solid and big, not too heavy but has enough weight, buttons and stick are fantastic. I would recommend this stick to anyone who is into fighting games.
