Product Description

  1. Insert the block of tofu between the two plates
  2. Push down the top plate and begin screwing down the plastic knobs to apply pressure. The pressure depends on the type of tofu and your time requirement. Do NOT apply too much pressure! The tofu should remain in a semi-block shape while you are pressing, and never be pressed beyond the edge of the plastic plates. If the tofu is squeezing out the sides of the press, you are pressing too quickly.
  3. Put the Tofu Press on a plate, in a bowl, or simply in the sink and let it drain.
  4. If necessary, readjust the knobs to keep pressure on the springs and the plate.
  5. After 15-20 minutes unscrew the plastic knobs and remove the tofu from the press.
  6. Enjoy! You are welcome!

It is possible to press 1/2 -2/3 cup of water from a cake of firm tofu (doufu); when cubed and fried, pressed tofu has a texture much like that of cubed chicken, and it holds together better than the unpressed cakes. That makes it suitable for a wider variety of dishes in which meat would be customary, and it makes it work better in almost any recipe calling for savory stir-fried doufu chunks. The traditional way to press doufu is between two plates, with a weight on the upper one. This is cumbersome and often messy. The Simple Tofu Press makes the job neat, easy and fast; the device works very well. The metal parts are stainless, so it rinses clean easily and can be run through the dishwasher. The simple result in the short term is that I've been cooking with pressed Tofu a lot more often since I got the press.

If you're sick of stacking plates and cookbooks and using up paper towels or rinsing the tofu water out of your cloth towels, do yourself a favor and get this. I waited far too long and picked up far too many fallen stacks of cookbooks off the kitchen floor.

I got this one as opposed to the "xpress", because there were a few bad reviews on that one in regards to the relatively thin plastic cracking and the springs malfunctioning. The simplicity of this one makes it very unlikely (if not impossible) that it will ever stop working or break. In its simplicity lies its robustness. I do not like ordering things and wondering if/when it's going to break, do I need to save the packaging, are the returns easy, etc.

The only downside however, is that you will have to manually tighten it every so often. I don't consider this to be that hard however. When I'm making a recipe with pressed tofu, I'll throw it in the press first thing, then start rinsing vegetables (tighten it), chop some vegetables (tighten it again), saute some vegetables (tighten it again), and you get the picture. By the time I get to the tofu step, it's sufficiently pressed. I like that because it's held so tightly, I can leave it upright in a mixing bowl, which makes tossing the water a little easier. In the past with the towels/cookbook/plate setup, I had to very carefully transport the plate to the sink so as to not spill the tofu water on the floor as I walked.

Overall, would definitely recommend. Worth the money. Wish I had bought it sooner.

This little piece of hardware works really well. There is a little "fiddling" with the screws (and it takes a bit of time), and it's somewhat hit and miss how firmly you want the thing to press on the tofu, but that is explained in the instructions. On my first try I "squished" the tofu too much, but it was still edible. It will take a bit of experience to get it perfect, but that's o.k., because the tofu was edible and I am not a chef! A LOT of water comes out, which is hard to tell when you've only used paper towels and a weight. You do need to put this on a plate or the water will run off all over the place. Very satisfying to see how much water is pressed out. I like using this and would recommend it just because it saves so many paper towels (if you press water out of tofu the "old fashioned way"). I think the price is reasonable, it's quite sturdy, and don't think it's likely to break, so it should be squeezing water out of tofu for many years to come.

Bought the press several months ago, and have only just used it last night. It really works spectacularly. Buy extra firm tofu, freeze it, thaw it, then press it. It took me no more than 3-5 minutes (if that; I didn't time it) to get the tofu almost completely dry. This is INFINITELY better (less mess, more complete and even drying) than using a plate, or cutting board (whatever) and weights. The press is very sturdy, and even though I've used it only once, I can tell it will last a long, long time. This is an excellent product and does exactly what it is supposed to do, perfectly. Truly worth the price. Buy quality and you buy once.

BTW - when the tofu's dry, crumble it, mix with chili powder, then brown in a skillet (don't burn! stir frequently). Use as a chili base or add to a hearty fall (or winter) stew, with lots of vegetables - - Qt. jar of home canned tomatoes, 2 big onions sliced, several cloves sliced garlic, chunked sweet potato, kale, celery, parsley, mushrooms, can of garbanzo beans with liquid, 2 TBL "Better Than Bouillon" low sodium. Let simmer for an hour or two, but watch, it's thick and can burn. So crock-pot it, or get to a boil and put covered pot in oven at 250 F, then you don't have to worry about scorching. My wife asked for seconds.
