If you have one of the new AC routers, you will need to also purchase and AC WIFI adapter to be able to take advantage of the additional speed on the 5GHz Band that the new standard supplies. Since I had upgraded my router, I wanted to have the extra speed and decided on buying this adapter.

My requirements for this adapter were that it needed to support Windows 7 and Windows 8 machines. Let me give you my results with each:

For Windows 7, follow the directions on the package. Ensure you load the software FIRST and then connect the A6200 adapter when it tells you to do so. In a week long test of this device with my Windows 7 laptop I have found the device to be VERY stable and to provide about 30% faster data transfers than my old N rated adapter. There is a software app that is also loaded called the A6200 Genie that makes checking your connections easy. This software is NOT required for the adapter to work. If you do not want the app, install the stand alone software only.

For Windows 8, DO NOT USE THE DISK AT ALL! Instead, go to the NetGear website and download the beta version of the Windows 8 software. Follow the directions for the download and ensure you unpack the file to a location that you can find (such as to your desktop - I created a file on my desktop call A6200 that I downloaded and unpacked the file to). You will find a set of instructions and the files necessary to install the A6200 on your computer.

Once you have that done, connect the A6200 to your computer. This is a large device and may cover up more than one USB port!! To allow for this, NetGear has provided an extension cable and mount. This cable and mount works very well and is a nice addition.

Using this adapter with Windows 10 is a terrible experience. I moved the desktop computer to a spot where it would have been troublesome to route ethernet cables to, so after doing a bit of looking around I decided that this was one of the USB adapters with the fewest poor reviews naming Win10 as the operating system.

I started out by freshly installing Windows 10, as I had a 250GB Intel SSD drive I'd been meaning to start using as my boot drive. After a fresh install, I tried putting in the included CD and using the installer to get the WiFi adapter working. No dice. It turns out that the drivers that ship with the thing don't work with Windows 10, and you've got to download Win 10 specific drivers from Netgear. Also, completely uninstall the device from Device Manager and make sure there's no Netgear software on your system (I just wiped the disk and reinstalled Windows 10 because I don't want to start out this experience with a problematic OS & device setup.. Then, you install the driver (the driver download which doesn't include Netgear's utility is recommended, so that's what I used), and afterwards plug in the adapter.

I did this, and everything seemed to work OK. Then, I decided to have the computer Sleep. After waking up, I couldn't get it to reconnect to the wifi access point until I uninstalled the adapter from Device Manager, restarted the computer, and plugged it back in (I had tried turning the computer off and back on again prior to this step).

A day or so later, I restarted the computer to install a driver update for my graphics card. After logging into Windows 10, I found that I had to do the whole thing where I remove the adapter from Device Manager, restart the computer, and plug it back in.

I purchased the R6300 in June and recently two A6200s for a Dell E6510 and a Dell E5520. Both with 64 bit Win 7 Professional. Running R6300 firmware 1.0.2.36 and A6200 software 1.0.0.18 I am running a consistent 866.5 mbps in most locations the laptops are used. Going to the furthest distance in the home on another floor I obtain 526 mbps. In the library, which is two walls and about 35 feet from the router I get 702 mbps. This is WPA2 Personal/AES and channel 157 on the 5 ghz freq. With of course 1300 mbps set on the config for the wireless. I transferred a 325 meg file from my DNS323 NAS in 14 seconds. Impressive and completely stable for a week now. I browsed the disk and found the "stand alone" .exe which just installs the driver and not the overhead of the Genie app. I would recommend this equipment.

I will preface this by saying I have been an IT Pro (Including Broadband, Area Engineer) for over 31 years.I know what I am doing.

First the good. If you are using this with Win. 7, expect a drastic increase in up and down transfer rates. When a Cable company promises a speed, they dont guarantee that speed, just "up to" that speed. If you pay for 20 down, and get 10, well you got what they promised. With the new 802.11AC Standard a couple of things need to be considered, for one this is not a mature standard (Its still in Draft) and the hardware isn't mature either. Almost everything AC related is in Beta.

However, if your using Win 7, installation and upgrade should be fine. I pay for 30 Mbps down and 6 up. With N standard I was getting around 12 down and three up and that was with good hardware. After installing the Netgear AC router and adapters on 5 computers, every computer saw a major increase in speeds. For example, on my primary high end build desktop, as mentioned I was getting about 12 our of 30, now I am measuring 32-35 down and average on 6 different tests 6.4 up. Where I was getting 3. An example of transfer rates on the home network drives I was able to transfer a 50 MB file in .0324 seconds. Thats fast, and its consistent. One of the biggest ways that you lose speed (Transfer speed) is through packet loss. Packet loss on the AC standard measures near 0. Anything up to Win 7, I say you should go for it.

Now the bad news. It doesn't work on Windows 8. All windows 8 drivers are currently in Beta and have not been updated since launch. The adapters will not stay connected in Win 8.
