I saw this film before it was released in theaters and I've made plans to purchase it since I saw it all those months ago.

Unicorn City is a film for gamers and non-gamers alike. Those who are into the gamer culture will find humor in the extremities that Unicorn City goes to, because we all secretly want to say "Magic Missle!" and see it blow up a monster. Those who aren't into the gamer culture will be easily introduced into the quirks of the trade. The character's are amusing and outrageous enough that anyone would be able to relate to them.

This movie portrays people who want to live a dream, and all the people who think they're weird for doing so.

You are who you pretend to be indeed!

This is a fun movie that will make you laugh--a lot. The story follows Voss, a gamer much like the one you might see at your local comic book shop. In order to impress a potential employer, Voss decides to create a gaming utopia for live-action role-players. These L.A.R.P.ers, as they are termed, create their own suits of armor and personality traits and "live" as their character for the duration of the game. Voss enlists the help of Marsha, a fellow gamer who is in love with him (Voss is in turn clueless to Marsha' affection). Chaos ensues when a rival attempts to take control of Unicorn City.

While the movie revolves heavily around gaming culture, you don't need to know too much to enjoy the movie. The movie has a particular charm, and there a lot of very funny moments (these will make sense after you've seen the film): the online break-up, "breakfast chicken," finding the sword, the centaur (several times...he tends to steal each scene he's in), Voss' dream, and others. Watch it with a group of friends and enjoy.

This is definitely a niche movie. It is also fairly obvious that it is a small, lower budget project. That being said, it was a fun watch, but I am not very likely to watch it again. Also, I probably would not have enjoyed it if I watched it alone.

The good: In Jokes, Shout Outs, and Hey, It's That Place!
If you know any or are a LARPer, or you happen to be a fantasy nerd living in the SLC area, then you can enjoy this movie about rebirth/coming of age that highlights some tropes and lampshades others. Also, the supporting cast is fun to watch throughout the entire movie. Especially the centaur.

The bad: Don't look too close.
You have to give this one some rope, as there are more than a few plot holes, and cases where you will need the MST3K Mantra ("If you're wondering how he eats and breathes / And other science facts / Then repeat to yourself 'It's just a show, / I should really just relax.'") to keep going.

The Ugly: The Designated Hero
Unfortunately, most of the movie is spent watching the protagonist be just as abusive, selfish, and immature as the antagonist. He repeatedly kicks those who can't kick back as a release for being kicked himself. It fully culminates not in celebration that he won, but that the protagonist lost. And even then it is only that the protagonist is abusive, selfish, immature, a liar, and a cheat that makes him only somewhat worse. The protagonist grows by the end, but not enough to avert an Esoteric Happy Ending.

The acting was, good, the costumes were great, and there were more than a few chuckles. It was good quality, especially within its price range. Also, the centaur...
Ultimately, though, I can't give it better than three stars. I want to give it 3.5 or 4, but I just can't.

SUCH a sweet, hilarious film. Had to get the Region 2 as the Region 1 is inexplicably not available. But as I can play all regions on my laptop, we're in business, and I can enjoy this clever movie over and over.

I loved this flick. Slacker/geeks lost in the gaming world, equally enamored of the whole cosplay element, try to take control of their inner lives. What's not to love? It's low budget, but well acted. If you have ever played paper-based fantasy games, waited with baited breath for the Renaissance Festival to start, and hated your day-to-day real-world job, you have to see this movie. This is produced by the same folks that brought us Napolean Dynamite. Funny, poignant, joyful.

OK, this is clearly a nerdfest movie -- I mean, you are going to enjoy it more if there is any aspect of gaming you have enjoyed. There's more to the story than that, it's also a human story, about everyone's more awkward moments in trying to be your most awesome self, and in liking someone and trying to make something happen with them. I enjoyed this more than Napoleon Dynamite, although that's kind of in a category of its own.

And anyway, who doesn't wish they could grab some heroism from gaming and bring it a little more into the real world, without, like, having real bullets and such flying around them.

I have probably watched this movie over ten times and it still remains funny. If you like movies such as Galaxy Quest (a spoof on Star Trek) and you like RPGs, then I bet you'd love this movie. It's got a good story line and great characters. Marsha is played by Jaclyn Hales and she steals most of the scenes. Or rather makes most of the scenes between her and Voss hilarious. If you are a RPG geek (like me) and love really great independent movies then please give this a shot. Oh and the music is perfect for the movie. Not a soundtrack that I'd purchase to listen to apart from the movie, but it is awesome in context with the movie.

Watch it for 15 minutes, if you aren't hooked by then, you are not a geek like me. haha
