I've bought this to use as a Linux firewall/router machine and could not be happier. Latest Debian installed without any issues, system boots from usb (for installation). Very quiet, just works. Please note that there are zero fans in this case and motherboard, so the case gets somewhat hot. I've solved this by purchasing an Antec TrueQuiet 140 140mm Cooling Fan and putting it outside of the big vent hole on the case; motherboard has the standard fan socket. With the fan the system is ultra cool and still absolutely quiet.

This device has a number of problems with USB. It only will detect some USB keyboards and not others which work fine on every other machine I have tried (including things like an Asus EEE pc of the same era.) It probably needs a PS2 keyboard to be completely stable. I was completely unable to ever get it to boot off of USB regardless of BIOS settings. It didn't matter if it was a flash drive or a USB DVD drive. Additionally it doesn't always reinitialize the hardware properly on reboot so sometimes the NIC links never come back on. The only reason I bought this is because it has 2 Intel NICs so I could use it for routing. It is such a pain to work with that I consider it money thrown away.

What else can be said about it? It's a low power compact box that's great for networking or low computing usage. It works well in that niche where it's out of site and makes no noise.

I use Smoothwall Express and it works well as a dedicated firewall and router. It's always on and very heavily used during the day routing about 360 GB of data per month. The dual core is nice and is more than enough power for this role. Network is easily able to keep up and fully uses all available bandwidth. The local network is gigbit and can utilize the higher bandwidth since it's caching with squid.

After a year of usage the CMOS battery died. Which is annoying as the firewall restart was interrupted after a power outage. It's easy enough to replace. Not sure why it failed so quickly. Perhaps the passive cooling? No other issues encountered.

    Pros:
    -Low power usage
    -Compact
-quiet, best when used with an SSD for no moving parts
-passive cooling so low dust accumulation
    -reliable Intel NIC's

    Cons:
-CMOS battery failed in about 1 year
    -no need for sound

Small, quiet, efficient, open design... what's more to love.

I replaced a 90W AMD athlon system and this is under 20W. Using it for a basic network firewall, filter, and web server front end to application servers. For the money, it will breakeven on purchase price through power savings within 3 years, and should last much longer (the athlon was about 10 years old).

A secondary benefit is the dual gigabit LAN, that has increased speed for me and the ISP side of the box is prepared for Google fiber if I should be so lucky to receive it. This makes configuring an OS easy as compared with the garbage heap of PCI network cards I had been using to keep my network box going.

The instructions are laughably sparse, but you are installing your own OS so why do you care? The build quality inside looks good and the ventilation seems adequate to the task. As advertised, space for one (1) 2.5" drive, I used a spinning platter disk from the garbage pile, but may go for a more reliable SSD solution when that disk fails.

I bought 2 of these and they last for about 2-3 years then started having power issues.
Changed out the power brick and they unit would just die... nothing in the logs.
    won't buy again.
    OS - PFSense and FreeBSD
I have some single NIC DELL FX-160 that are older than these and are still up and running FreeBSD 11.2-RELEASE-p9

Nice pc. Bought it to use as an Untangle UTM. Performs great. One word of warning untangle is based on debian however i could not get the display to work in any video mode. Untangle can be configured via web interface so i am good but could be a sign of an issue with other debian based distributions

I picked this up because it was low power/quiet/dual gigabit. I'm using it as a firewall/router with pfsense and it is working perfectly. It is far more powerful than actually needed, but that gives room for addons/http services and stuff.

It has been sitting next to my modem for the last few days and it is completely silent. Couldn't have asked for a better machine for this use.

It is a tiny bit bigger than I thought -- about 8 inches tall/deep, and 2 wide, but definitely not too big.
