My wife has an imbalance of vitamin C that causes her to have physiological panic attacks, where she becomes light headed, mouth waters, eyes glaze, blurred vision and in extreme attacks becomes unresponsive even though she can hear what's being said to her. Due to our beliefs in natural parenting and such we chose not to incorporate psychiatric panic relieving drugs into her diet in order to prevent side effects and any problems in our children since she breast feeds them as babies. Consequently she did much research to find relief and found that just increasing her vitamin C daily would resolve the issue unless her system becomes lacking again. By the way, we found out the physicological panic attacks were related to this imbalance by our own research, no Psychiatrist ever told us that. However, once we did find out and began to increase her vit C intake her symptoms disappeared, again unless she forgot for a few days or something and at that time they would return. Upon returning it would take a few days to relieve the symptoms again with balancing her vit C with the normal method of vit C such as orange juice and vit C tablets. Upon more research in order to keep our kids vit C balanced without all the ingredients that are harsh and we are learning are not good for our bodies she found that an Indian Gooseberry had the greatest potency of vitamin C and that there were vegan capsules of it, but kids cannot swallow those yet. Since they do not make chewables of the indian gooseberry yet that we've found we decided to do the powder. We found a great resolve in this as if my wife ever finds herself having an imbalance and a panic attack again it no longer takes days to get back in balance again. Now she just adds double the normal dose (1/4 teaspoon) of powder to a drink and no more symptoms by the next day. However, it's a little difficult to get the powder to dissolve and the kids don't like the chunkiness in their drinks. So one way we've figured out how to give it to them is to sprinkle it onto their fresh pressed almond or peanut butter with jam sandwiches. Due to the bits of chunks left in fresh pressed peanut and almond butter they don't even know the powder is there. The only thing is we don't like giving them the same type sandwiches every day and they will not eat meat sandwiches with the powder as they can tell the powder is there and since it has no flavor and does not dissolve well it makes the sandwiches taste bad. Meanwhile, until a chewable Indian Gooseberry comes along, maybe even a lozenge would be good, the powder will have to do and my wife and I will become more creative. But, no matter, the best benefit is found in the wonderful way it balances out my wife's deficiency so fast and stops the panic attack symptoms.
Update 3/29/14: Original review 2/16 , referenced in video: Well I wanted to go ULTRA organic so instead of getting a premixed ayurvedic blend with amla incorporated, I had to get this stuff and mix it in myself. Serves me right for trying to be a purist snob lol.
For the quantity I think this is a good price. A little powder goes a long way so properly stored this will last a while. This is a very large grain powder, so washing with it's a bit of a headache for a couple reasons:
1) I'm always lieft with a few grains in my hair, even after the extra rinses. 2) SO messy. I mixed it into the As I Am Coconut CoWash, turning the product into this thick grayish paste reminescent of clay mud :-/. I scoop this muck out of the jar and there are large clumps of powder in the scoop, so I break those up. Some of the clumps fall into the shower, making the tub look fairly gross. It washes off easily enough, no permanent staining that I can see, but still....grainage everywhere. Have to rinse down the whole tub in addition to my hair afterwards.
Why do I keep using this when it's such a hassle in the shower? Because it does what it's suppossed to do. I leave it on for a couple minutes. My hair is softer, the color is more vibrant, it's much easier to manage, and I've noticed improvement in moisture retention since incorporating this.
If you make your own hair products this is a great buy. I love the effects of this but am a little tired of the mess, so I will probably find a premade Ayurvedic product after I finish the supply of this. Or maybe just pure Amla oil wil do the same thing. If you don't mind the mess definitely get this.
This is my favorite for safely coloring my hair. Gives my greys nice auburn golden highlights. The color looks good in the sun. I am apparently allergic to both indigo and henna, so this is what I found as an alternative. My only complaint is that, like all of the mud-like natural hair dyes, it is a chore to use, takes a long time for the color to set, and washing it out takes forever. Plus, it only lasts for about 2 weeks.
I started taking Amla powder daily because of it's high antioxidant value, but I discovered a totally unexpected benefit from this herb. For years I've had a problem with very sensitive skin which, I believe, is related to food sensitivities. If I eat too much of some foods, particularly grains, my skin becomes super sensitive to the point that it is painful to wear clothes. After taking Amla for about 6 months (a heaping half teaspoon twice a day) this problem disappeared. Before I could only eat grain once or twice a week, any more than that and I would get a flair up. Now I can eat grain every day with no problem. My mother had to give up eating hot peppers because they made her skin itch like mad. I recommended amla to her, and after she had taken it for a few months she was able to eat hot peppers again with no itching. I have no idea why this works, but it's great! Vadik Herbs amla is very high quality and the price is very competitive.
I've been mixing one tablespoon (heaped) in warm water and drinking it for about 4 days now. Today when I washed my hair I noticed less hair fall than usual. I haven't used it as a face pack or hair pack but I plan on doing that as well. Another thing, I read one of the reviewers mention that it was mixed with sand. I don't think so. I have had Amalaki in the past (several kinds)- this tastes just like wild amla is supposed to. There is a slight sandy taste but its negligible. The quality is definitely good. The only thing is that I think I overestimated how long 1 pound would last- I will be running out very quickly if I am consuming 1 tablespoon a day and using it as a face pack/hair pack once a week. Definitely worth trying this out - lots of health benefits!
Update#1: I'm been on this for about a month now and I continue to see improvement. My hair is healthier - shinier and hair fall has reduced significantly.
