So we all know that Otterbox has been around for a long while. I've been looking around for a cool case but couldn't find one I loved. I would love it if Otter would make a black & yellow or grey & yellow case, but they don't.
I chose the defender because I'm pretty rough on my phones. I must have dropped my last phone at least 100 times. With the iPhone's notable glass breakage, I didn't want to risk it. I wanted waterproof too, but the best waterproof one (lifeproof) didn't convince me it could stand up to my every day roughness.
I do love the TakTik, but it's price and unavailability for the iphone5 was a deterrent.
On to the product review:
The case went on with little difficulty. Once on, it doesn't shift around. The case fits snugly around the phone. Like with all cases, charging isn't an issue with this phone because I use the 30-pin to lightning adapter to charge it. So it fits into my Memorex MI4703P Dual Alarm Clock Radio for iPod and iPhone (Black) perfectly with the adapter.
The Screen:
The screen is pretty tough and it's glued to the hardcase so it won't detach from the case (easily). I think they tried to make the screen protector material to simulate the face of the iphone itself. In that it's a solid, non-tacky surface (like so many protectors out there). I definitely appreciate how smooth and free my fingers slide over the surface. I generally buy a Zagg screen protector for all my devices, but I don't think I'll have to with this one.
Colorwise, they designed this case with the hunter in mind. Bright orange face and a minimally grainy photo of the alpines on the back. Still a nice photo though (excluding the stupid "REALTREE" text across one of the tree branches. Not sure what the heck is up with that bad idea.
The clip is sturdy. A little odd to use, but once I figured out the quirks of removing and reattaching the phone to the case, it works well. The phone clips into place tightly. There's no question if it secure when you attach it. There is no room for it to wiggle out or be loose. It either clips in place, or it doesn't. The clip will wear against your hip if it is in direct contact with skin. but if it is outside your shirt, you'll be good to go.
All in all, a great phone case. Solid. SO far it has stood up to my abuse. Though I've only had it for about three weeks so far.
------------
I've had Defender series cases in the past, and also bought my wife one around Christmas 2012 when I got her the iPhone 5. But now that I've got my own iPhone 5, and seeing how well her case has withstood the 8 months she's had it, i HAD to get one. Of course, there are many colors, etc., but I've always liked the look of the RealTree camo. The case does fit slightly loose, but that doesn't bother me. Protection seems good, although I would like to see a cover of some sort over the camera/flash/mic space. However, given that I'm not really in a lot of dusty environments, I doubt this will ever be a serious issue.
Price is also far better than buying from a big-box store. I looked at the most well-known of low-cost retailers and saw this exact case for $56.88. Wow! Easy way to save $25 by waiting a few days for delivery.
It seems via a small oversight, I ended up purchasing the IPhone 5 version instead of the IPhone 5S version, resulting in the home button flap. Not a huge deal since I can somewhat put it out of the way if I need unobstructed use of the button to use the fingerprint reader.
--- Original review ---
I have heard nothing but good things about OtterBox and their cases, so when the opportunity came up for me to get one I didn't hesitate. This thing definitely lives up to its expectations; my 5S appears very well protected, I could probably drop it from a substantial height and it would probably emerge unscathed; not that I am going to intentionally try this however. The buttons appear to be relatively easily accessible (volume buttons, lock screen, etc). I say relatively because the home button, along with the Lightning port and headphone jacks, are by default hiding behind flaps that need to be pulled out in order for them to be usable. While this isn't too big a deal, I do wish that these flaps had slots in the side of the case where you could put them for either semi-permanent, or permanent fixture if one is not interested in keeping the home button and connectors exposed. This would especially come in handy when making regular use of the fingerprint reader in the 5S, which I happen to myself. Other than that it's a great product!

I got this otterbox yesterday. It initially seemed to be better quality and stronger and durable. Til I installed it.
The front screen of the shell... The inner plastic case DOESNT clip properly at the bottom two clips. So the cover screen doesn't sit properly on the phones screen. But just at the lower half of the phone. And because of this it makes little TAP TAP TAP noises as you type in the keyboard. But not at top half of screen
It's unbearably annoying !!! And ive only had the case on for a few hours.... Tried to see if I could live with it. Tried see If it would become more stable. It's not.
It's irritating as hell.
Any suggestions for an iPhone 5s cover in similar design (two layer) case that actually FITS these phones snugly as they should?!
Potential negative for some: Looks and feels like a brick because it's chunky enough.
Positive side: Because it's chunky, I feel it in my pocket and I have peace of mind that it's there. Unlike many phones I see that have cracked screens, my phone has taken a lot of abuse and it's safe and secure never letting me down.
I would highly reccomend them for individuals that require a tougher case.
I'm a mechanic and have my phone in my pocket most days so can take some abuse being in a working environment.
I would definately reccomend thi case to others.
