Product Description

iTrack Solo provides the best solution for recording your instruments and vocals using an iPad and is a certified ‘Made for iPad' device. Featuring a Focusrite microphone preamp and an input to record directly from electric guitars, iTrack Solo is the perfect companion for any singer-songwriter wanting to take their demos to the next level. Using the very best in digital audio technology iTrack Solo will capture your sound with pristine quality. Simply plug in and press record. iTrack is also fully compatible with your Mac or PC. Since 1985, Focusrite has been a leading manufacturer in the professional audio field. This experience was used when designing the input section of iTrack Solo, which features a clean, low-noise, low-distortion preamp, which is also found in our flagship interface Liquid Safire 56. iTrack Solo also provides phantom power for professional condenser microphones. With a guitar input alongside the microphone input, you can record both vocals and your instrument simultaneously to separate tracks in your software. You could even use both a microphone on your guitar and the guitar input at the same time to get a different sound. Unique halo signal indicators let you know that you've got a good volume for recording. A large monitor dial provides a tactile control for the volume of your speakers and headphones, while a high quality headphone amp provides a clean yet loud signal to headphones connected to the front panel socket. The direct monitor switch routes audio directly from the inputs to both the headphone and speaker outputs so you hear the incoming signal with no latency from your music app. On the rear panel you will find phono outputs allowing you to connect iTrack Solo to a pair of powered speakers, or to your home Hi-Fi system. The speaker volume can then be controlled using the large dial on the front of iTrack Solo meaning everything you need is within reach. Ableton Live Lite and Focusrite's Scarlett Plug-In Suite are included.

Plug Straight In

The front panel has an input for a microphone and an input for an instrument (such as an electric guitar, bass guitar or the output of an electro-acoustic guitar). At Focusrite, that's all that matters--sound is everything. A supplied cable connects iTrack Solo to the iPad, and it is powered by the included USB cable that delivers the power necessary to run the iTrack's high-specification components. If you are using iTrack Solo with a Mac or PC you don't need to connect it to the mains, your computer will supply enough power via the USB cable. The cable supplied in the box with your iTrack Solo is designed to pass Apple's Made for iPad tests to ensure that any official iPad accessory can meet their standards for noise interference resilience, specifically the TDMA noise that can be induced when an iPad receives a telephone call over a 2G network.

Super easy to set up, portable, iPad compatible!
While the FocusRite Scarlett 2i2 is perfect for those needing 2 microphone inputs, sometimes you’re just going solo. If you’re looking for a high quality, portable, easy-to-use USB audio interface for 1 XLR input and 1 Line In input, the FocusRite iTrack Solo might just be for you. The FocusRite iTrack Solo is a USB, RCA, and iPad-compatible interface. This device features a durable, premium-feeling metal case with 4 rubber non-slip feet on the bottom. It has 1 XLR input with 48v Phantom Power (USB power required) and a 1/4" Line In input, both with gain knobs. The iTrack Solo also has a 1/4" headphone output for monitoring. Like the Scarlett 2i2, you can use the iTrack Solo as a DAC to listen to audio playback via USB from your PC, and you can use it for direct monitoring of your inputs. The back of the device features a Kensington lock, USB 2.0 output, White and Red RCA-style line out for monitoring or running to an audio system, and a “Device Link” port for iPad. The main target audience for the iTrack Solo seems to be those looking to record and mix music with their iPads. While this is a handy capability, this isn’t something I would ever use. I do not own an iPad so I cannot test this feature. What I was able to test and use was the audio recording and playback. I originally purchased this interface for a small voiceover booth I put together for my voiceover work. I had an Audio Technica AT 2020 condenser microphone, this and a laptop. It was very, very easy to set up, and the quality was amazing. The sheer ease and quality of recording with this interface from my microphone to Adobe Audition is what convinced me to try out the Scarlett 2i2 on my main studio setup, and I love them both. I even tested the Line In input with my Casio keyboard’s line out, and the quality of that recording blew me away, as well. Audio playback is very straightforward, just set the iTrack Solo as your default audio device and you’re good to go. However, since this interface is smaller than the Scarlett 2i2, it does not have an audio playback volume knob, so your playback volume comes in at line level. Be careful; this can get quite loud if you’re not careful.

I wanted to find a device that let me record easily when at a gig, or just in my office. I did a LOT of research into devices that were USB only, even other ones that Focusrite sold. The main reason I picked this one was its versatility in being both iPad and USB compatible.

The complaints about the iPad connector cable are valid - it's too stiff and short. I feel like I might accidently break it off if I'm not too careful. Why it uses a proprietary connector on the back of the unit, I'll never know. To combat the included 30-pin cable I bought a $10 3ft 30-pin extension cable, which seems to do the job nicely. The GarageBand software on the iPad is simple enough to use, and while it can only record one of the 2 input channels at a time, that's fine for what I expected. To record from a live sound-board, I just use the XLR input, set the gain (with the awesome colored halo ring), and save the recording as a mono track.

Being small and solidly built, I've got no problem tossing this in the milk-crate with the rest of my cables and peddles.

In regards to how it records when plugging into a computer via USB (an iMac in this case), it's even better than I expected. The GarageBand software on the Mac does have the ability to record both input channels at the time time. The on-board monitor volume and headphone is fantastic. I thought it only would play back what was being input at that moment, but it does more than that. It's a real monitor (the GarageBand software recognizes it's the monitor output), and when you have a multi-track recording that you're working on, the software allows you to pass back other tracks from the computer while recording a new track.

For example, I recorded a track with just the guitar (track 1), I was using the 1/4" input channel, and laid down that track. Then I created a second guitar track and recorded a second guitar part (headphones plugged into iTrack Solo) and I was able to hear both the current track I was recording, and the first track. Lastly, I plugged in a mic into the first input, and created a 3rd vocal only track. When I was singing, I was able to hear both guitar parts with the headphones still plugged into the iTrack Solo as well as my vocals recording in real-time. I wasn't expecting this level of capability, and was very impressed by the lack of any noticeable latency in both the backing tracks and the vocals I was recording with all 3 going at the same time.

The last thing I want to mention is the XLR pre-amp. Focusrite has been making high-end professional recording equipment for a long time, and the thing they're most well-known for is the mic pre-amp. I have to say, it is spectacular. There is absolutely no noise (no hiss, or clicks) of any kind. The gain staging nobs with the color halos make it so easy to setup, it's almost too easy. The sound it captures is exactly what you expect, and you'll notice right away if you're using a low quality microphone. It definitely stands up to their reputation. Having 48v phantom power to use those top dollar condenser mics is also a really nice thing to have. The demos on their website show how simple it is to use. Once you start playing with it, you'll realize it is a really nice tool for a solo artist, or someone who wants high portability, but great sound quality.

Wasn't expecting the build quality - nice solid aluminum feel to it. Feel like you can toss it in the bag and, with such a small footprint, it stows easily and is light to carry. Works as good as my Presonus Audiobox, but with the added functionality of being iPad friendly. I thought I'd try it on my iPhone 4S and that worked, too. I was able to remotely record using a nice condenser mic (AKG C214), the iSolo provides 48V phantom power and straight into my phone. (Note: the iSolo is bus powered, so if you're away from the computer, you will need DC power source for iPad or iPhone - an adapter is provided)

Sounded every bit as good as if I'd gone through the computer. Also like the halo dials around the gain knobs - they shift from green to orange to red, if your levels are too high. Overall, if you're looking for portability or even a starter isn't face that can provide the versatility of this is a great addition to your recording toolbox!

Before I purchased this product I researched various audio interfaces within an affordable price range. I settled for this and regret nothing. I'd also like to note that I didn't purchase this to use with an iPad. I use it with a laptop running Windows 7 and the short iPad cable was not a concern of mine. It's very simple to set up, just plug in the usb cable, download the drivers from the site, and you're good to go. I definitely like the warning halo around the gain nobs as well as the monitor level nob. It's so fluid and that's what I was looking for. I use an MXL 770 mic with this and it's amazing! Fantastic quality and I can't hear any noise at all. My recordings sound so much better now. I definitely recommend this product (I bought mine used and it was like new).

This is only getting 2 stars because it does not have a lightning connector. This specific interface comes with a short (1-foot) 30 pin connector. I do not have an older IPad, but I have a hard time believing that the cable by itself would be enough length for anyone. On the same note, If you get this unit, you can get a lightning cable from Focusrite, but they're freaking $36.95. The plug on the back of this is a proprietary jack, so you'll have no choice but to shuck out the $$$ for the lightning cable. Still, this is a great unit for the price - Look for my review on the lightning version of this. I returned and ordered the lightning cable version. Amazon handled it great, as always : )

I bought one of these for myself after using one in a junior high school music program. (I'm a teacher, not a student.) I have only used it with Garage Band, but it works really well. I have used it to record electronic drums, bass guitar (direct out from a multi-effects pedal), vocals, and guitar (with garage band's virtual amps.) I've been very impressed. If you really turn up the gain, you will start to get a lot of noise, but the noise comes well AFTER you get past the point that any reasonable signal is "clipping"-making the light turn red. So, with the gain at 1/3 or so of the way up, you get good clean signal with little to no noise. The cord connecting to the ipad is really pathetically short. I bought 2 of the same Ziotek extension cable-at the recommendation of Focusrite. One worked, the other didn't. So, yeah, best of luck with that. Focusrite should really have made a longer cable. It gets in the way of the USB power plug a little bit, and makes things awkward. Other than that, I like it a lot.

One word..awesome with excellent PreAmps. I was using a M-Audio Fastrack 1st Gen (compatible with ipad via a camera connection kit and a powered USB hub) for my Windows-10 PC, and a Behringer IS202 Ipad dock with a 30 pin to lightning original apple connector, also 1 Irig Pre, Mic interface, for my IPad. I switched to I-track solo as it is compatible with Win/Mac/IOS. The behringer IS202 ipad dock has quality issues and is meant for Ipad with 30 pin connectors, you will need a converter for IPad Air and above. Also the behringer had only 12v Phantom power for condenser mic, whereas I need 48v (the M-Audio has 48v phantom power though). I am a Singer and a Guitarist, hence the 2 inputs for xlr mic and line in, suffices for me. I thought of getting the Itrack DOCK at first, the only advantage was 2 xlr + 2 line inputs and a USB MIDI controller/keyboard input. As I am not much of a keyboard player and the Itrack Dock cant be used as a sound card for my Windows PC, I bought the Itrack Solo (also the list price was reduced). I use the the following Windows PC DAWs - ProTools SE / Acid Pro / Ableton Live / Sonar Cakewalk / Fruity Loops 10 / Nuendo and For my Ipad, the following DAWs - Auria Pro (its the best!) / Cubasis 2 / Garageband. I will answer any questions pertaining to this product as well as any other recording related queries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wunderbares Interface für den kleinen Geldbeutel!
Reviewed in Germany on March 27, 2013
    Hallo erstmal :D

    Fazit:

    4,5 Sterne

This has really increased the functionality of my iOS devices, as it effectively turns them into portable recording studios. It works with AmpKit, an amazing app that simulates guitar and bass amps, and Garage Band for iPad. I'm sure it will work with other apps too, but I haven't tested it. You can also link AmpKit and Garage Band (for recording) with another app called Audiobus, thus achieving the portable recording studio I was referring too.

So, in summary, this works with iPad, iPhone and PC (tested). It can be used with electro acoustic, electric and bass guitars (tested) and you can connect an xlr (including phantom powered) microphone to it. The only draw back is that it doesn't have a stereo input for recording keyboards, but you can buy those separately for the iPad!

One thing you should take note of is that this device does need to be powered by the supplied usb cable (either via a computer or a usb plug adaptor). Interestingly, when you connect the powered device to your iOS device, it doesn't charge them, which I found disappointing, but a small issue really, as battery drain isn't excessive.

All in all; a wonderful product that I'm really pleased with. But charging capability would be a welcome improvement!
