You might be looking at this and the Blackmagic Design Intensity Extreme HDMI and Analog Capture & Playback Device - Thunderbolt and trying to figure out the difference.

From the standpoint of ingesting HDMI footage the two devices are pretty much identical. The Ultrastudio Mini recorder takes HDMI in on one side and shoots video through the Thunderbolt port to a PC or Mac. It even uses the exact same software as the Intensity Extreme including the included Media Express recording app. The Mini works just as well as the Intensity extreme for streaming applications.

Where they differ is that the Intensity Extreme has the ability to pass through the incoming HDMI to another device. It also has analog input and output capabilities which this device lacks.

If you're usually just capturing and/or streaming HDMI video footage, this is all you need. It works great once it's configured properly.

I purchased two of these to replace the more expensive Intensity Extreme when I realized it essentially does the same thing! But when I received it, I couldn't get it to work with my Canon HDMI camcorders (output is 1080i/59.94). I tried it on two of my MacBooks and it just wouldn't work. Was planning to return it for a refund when as a last ditch effort, I read through the reviews at bhphotovideo.com (they are worth checking out when Amazon reviewers don't help) and found a review by Mauricio Sarmento (June 2013). Here's what you need to do:

1) Download and install the latest software for UltraStudio MiniRecorder from blackmagic's web site. Restart your cpu.
2) Hook up the Ultrastudio to your computer using a thunderbolt cable and connect a camcorder to your Ultrastudio.
3) Open up your Mac's System Preferences, click on "Blackmagic Design", and set "Input" to "HDMI Video & HDMI Audio."
4) Open up Blackmagic Media Express and your camcorder's HDMI signal should show up on "Log and Capture" (make sure you select 1080i/59.94 for your preference settings in Media Express).

Hope that helps someone!

I am preparing to do a weekly live-streaming event for my organization. We're on a shoestring budget (who isn't in the NPO world?), and we're still evaluating streaming providers. The only hardware encoder under $500 is tied to a specific provider, which would simplify our setup but would tie us to that provider. (No, thanks.)

The Blackmagic UltraStudio Mini Recorder was an intriguing, low-cost solution for interfacing our HDMI camera with a MacBook Pro we already own. This device allows us to put more of the encoding chain into software, giving us a choice of encoders and providers. I purchased it along with an Apple MD861ZM/A Thunderbolt Cable - 2.0 M (NEWEST VERSION).

Thanks to the experiences many other reviewers have shared here, I knew to download the software directly from BMD, and installed it before plugging in any devices. The version current at this writing (Blackmagic Desktop Video 10.3.7) also installs four applications:

* Blackmagic Disk Speed Test
* Blackmagic LiveKey
* Blackmagic Media Express
* Blackmagic Multibridge Utility

LiveKey and Multibridge Utility don't seem to apply to this device at all. Disk Speed Test is what it sounds like, performing a "stress test" of write and read speeds to evaluate which video formats your current setup is likely to support. Media Express can capture, log, and play back video from the Mini Recorder and other devices.

My experience with the Mini Recorder (interfacing a Canon HDMI camera to my MBP, and feeding it to Wirestream for a test YouTube live video event) was almost painless.

This product can be used to capture unencrypted HDMI signals (without HDCP) or SDI video. So a PS3 for instance will not work with it. But otherwise it is very flexible and captures with very high-quality. The software control panel allows you to select many capture resolutions and frame rates. It allowed me to capture to a Mac from a 1080i camcorder to BM Media Express (the included software), FCP X, and Wirecast. It did not show up as a video source in Quicktime Player. For Thunderbolt-enabled computers without USB 3.0, this is probably the cheapest, simplest, and most effective device.

Perfect to convert 1080p HDMI to Thunderbolt. Small with no bulky power supply. Our application is to get HDM from cameras into our MacBookPro running MiMo production/streaming software from Boinx. We use an external Elgato dock where all of our various perpipheral devices, including the UltraStudio Mini, a laptop using Magewell XI100DUSB-HDMI HDMI to USB 3.0 Video Capture Dongle, and an external disk drive reside. That leaves only 1 Thunderbolt connection to the MacBook Pro. We use the UltraStudio Mini for r live video and the Madgewell for the less active external Laptop with PowerPoint inputs. I imagine you could do both with the Madgewell - but this uses the extra Thunderbolt port we have giving more flexibility.
