Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I had also reviewed the other Seagate desktop thunderbolt adapter, so was curious to how this compared to that one. Same as I did with the other, I tested this with two drives, one a normal 500 GB 5400 RPM drive pulled out of a Mac, and the other a Crucial M4 SSD. I tested both drives with the same file set, and also ran the test with a USB 3 adapter, to give a comparison. As with the larger desktop unit, there were parts where the thunderbolt really shined, and others that would lead me to just stick with the less expensive USB 3 depending on my actual expected use.

Drive adapter is bigger than I'd want to carry around in my laptop bag. The end with the plug for the drive is twice as "tall" as their standard go flex adapter ends, then you have the whole piece underneath it. So basically, for their "portable" solution, you're going to use twice as much space carrying the thunderbolt adapter and a drive as you would carrying just a USB 3 go flex drive and plug. It's built well though, very nice construction. Of course, this doesn't come with the thunderbolt cable. So do some digging since you can find them cheaper than $50.

Testing was done on a 2012 Retina Macbook Pro, so the laptop itself is also using SSD internally. Also interesting was how hot the adapter got in use. I was just plugging naked drives on it, not ones in the goflex adapters, so there was air between the drive and the unit, to help keep the drive from heating up the adapter. The SSD made it get less hot than the spinning drive did.

I took a 12GB file to simulate an average MKV movie or other similar large file type normal people might deal with. For testing the small, high number of files work, I took one of my JPG folders, which was about 4.7 GB total, made up of around 4,800 files.

I bought this to hook up a 2011 MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion OS, for use with a new Samsung 830 256GB Sata-3 SSD. Thunderbolt port much speedier than the USB-2 alternative.

Works great with no issues of function. Easily ran off the port replicating my existing internal drive that I was replacing.

Later used with an older OWC SSD Sata-2 drive 240GB, both with Time machine and later to re-format for use in another machine.

Only issue of note, is that I found it best to put a small stack of paper under the drive when in the adapter to help shim it up. A partial stack of yellow 3M style post-em notes worked great for this.

I wanted to have my iMac boot off of an SSD but wasn't willing to tear it apart (voiding the warranty) to do so. I ordered this little guy, threw in a 256GB Crucial M4 and it has worked flawlessly ever since. Boots up great, goes to sleep great, and is very fast and snappy compared to the mechanical hard drive it came with. I recommend it for anyone that wants the speed of an SSD but doesn't want to go through the process of disassembling their iMac to do so.

The only caveat that I've read is that you can't put more than a 256GB SSD in it (at least if you are planning on using it as a boot drive). There is something about it not being able to power that big of a drive and people were having problems. Stick to 256GB's or less and you will be good to go. If you want to put a bigger one in there, consider buying the Backup Plus desktop thunderbolt adapter. It has a dedicated power cord so power consumption is not a problem.

If you are not looking at using an SSD with this unit you should probably look at a simple usb 3.0 enclosure, for round $20 as only an SSD can saturate the interface on USB 3.0.

If you need some mounting brackets for a standard laptop drive, I published some 3D printed brackets and files on thingiverse, 180450. [...]

But overall a good interface for the fastest portable storage ( at a reasonable cost ) when paired with an SSD.

The only other way to get this sort of performance and maybe better is the Promise Technology Pegasus J2 512GB Power Adapter with Quick Start Guide and Carry Case (J2512GB) , but it is 3 times the price of this unit with an SSD, and with the seagate way it is drive swappable.

Here are the test results with an SSD, using Xbench 1.3, it is around 50% faster than USB 3.0 but you will need a good drive to take advantage of thunderbolt.
