What you need is an active adapter -- something like the or the would work just fine

I purchased a Kingwin ADP-04A (24+1) adapter with the intent of doing a teardown and pinout map; a friend of mine purchased one of these and asked me why it didn't work. The product documentation says: "Connect VGA/SVGA Monitor Cable to DVI Plug" and "Compatible with Flat Planel Displays, Digital CRT Displays, Projects and HDTV", implying it's intended to let you use a video card with DVI-D output with a VGA-only monitor. My main concern was that the adapter had a DVI-D connector (i.e. purely digital -- analog pins C1-C4 are missing) and was in a form factor that implied it was purely passive (active adapters do in fact work because they contain an IC that does D/A conversion as well as voltage conversion -- they also cost more).

The results of the teardown confirm the ADP-04A is a passive adapter, using literal wire to connect VGA pins to DVI pins. The wire is completely encapsulated in a hard plastic that has a wax-like feel. The adapter is very rugged, I give them that. However, the pinout mapping makes absolutely no sense, and acts as confirmation that the ADP-04A is most likely a scam -- or bare minimum, it most certainly does not do what its product documentation claims it's intended to do. Here's the pinout:

VGA pin 1 (red) connected to DVI-D pin 8 (analog V-sync)
VGA pin 2 (green) connected to DVI-D pin 7 (DDC data)
VGA pin 3 (blue) connected to DVI-D pin 6 (DDC clock)
VGA pin 4 does not exist (no pin in connector)
VGA pin 5 does not exist (no pin in connector)
VGA pin 6 (red GND) connected to DVI-D pin C5 (analog GND)
VGA pin 7 (green GND) connected to DVI-D pin C5 (analog GND)
VGA pin 8 (blue GND) connected to DVI-D pin C5 (analog GND)
VGA pin 9 does not exist (no pin in connector)
VGA pin 10 does not exist (no pin in connector)
VGA pin 11 does not exist (no pin in connector)
VGA pin 12 does not exist (no pin in connector)
VGA pin 13 (H-sync) connected to DVI-D pin 24 (TMDS clock+)
VGA pin 14 (V-sync) connected to DVI-D pin 23 (TMDS clock-)
VGA pin 15 does not exist (no pin in connector)

The metal DVI-D shell and VGA shell are not connected (no "shell GND"). And (most importantly of all), as mentioned: because this is a DVI-D connector (not DVI-I or DVI-A), pins C1 (analog red), C2 (analog green), C3 (analog blue), C4 (analog H-sync) aren't present.

Amazon should really pull these passive DVI-D to VGA adapters off the market.

Summary: if you're looking for an adapter that will allow you to use your present-day video card with a DVI-D connector with an older VGA monitor, do not buy this adapter. What you need is an active adapter -- something like the StarTech.com DVI2VGAE or the gofanco DVI-D to VGA Active Converter would work just fine.

Cannot Convert DVI-D to VGA!!

As a I learned from this experience, you cannot convert DVI-D to VGA; DVI-D does not have the four pins surrounding the horizontal blade. The four pins carry the analog signal. There is NO ANALOG SIGNAL TO CONVERT! This simply DOES NOT WORK. Only DVI-I can be converted with an adapter like this to a VGA signal.

I am still undecided on trying to return the item, but I think I will request return authorization just to see what happens.

Again, DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY AND TIME buying this if you think you are going to plug it into the DVI-D output on your video card, and hook it up to a VGA cable to your monitor. Ain't gonna happen!

Works exactly as intended

It is unfortunate that the reviews for the DVI-D to VGA (24 + 1 pin) and DVI-I to VGA (24 + 5 pin) are combined for this brand and type of product. The 24 + 1 pin configuration almost never works. Only a few specific setups allow VGA signal over DVI-D links. The 4 additional pins in the 24 + 5 pin design are the ones that carry the analog signal that allow the use of a VGA monitor with a DVI connector. If your video card only has a DVI-D connector, it is likely that you will not be able to connect to an old VGA monitor. That is not a limitation of this adapter, but of your video card.

Note that these adapters are for the output side only. You cannot connect this adapter to the DVI input on your monitor and get signal from a VGA output on your computer.

Complete and utter fraud, worthless product. Do not buy it.

Do not, under any circumstances, purchase this product. The description is an outright lie, the sale is a complete fraud. Amazon should be ashamed. Understand, I did not do my correct due diligence and should have known better, but unless someone knows where and how to look they will never know. It is completely impossible for this product to do what it claims, there is no possible way for it to do so. Unfortunately, by the time I figured out what the issue was, I was four days past my return window so out into the trash they go.

I cannot rate this product low enough to reflect my displeasure and disgust.

Do not purchase this. Do. Not. Purchase. This.

Learn from my mistake and do not purchase it.

Which is how the super long DVi cable I have wanted it

I did not work for me. i was trying to input both VGA and DVi into the same monitor (from 2 different computers). I got this because it did not have the additional 4 prongs, 2 above and 2 below the wide, flat prong. Which is how the super long DVi cable I have wanted it. My plan was to use the input button on the monitor to switch back and forth between the computers. In the end I think it is just my monitor being incapable of handling both inputs at the same time. In the end I came up with a different solution. A $6 lesson learned. Changing from 2 to 3 stars since it was no fault of the seller, just didn't work in my case.

VERY disappointing. The issue I have is that the screw knobs are plastic with minimal grip and no way to use a tool to tighten.
The plastic is molded over a smooth threaded shaft with no physical connection other than friction. When the turn the knob, it just turns on the shaft and will not screw in. total JUNK. Only buy adapters with metal knobs. I have included 2 pictures.. 1- metal knob (GOOD) and one that is a picture of this product plastic (JUNK).. Totally worthless if you want to use it as part of a long term set-up.
