Season 1 started with Todd and Jack Hoffman going up to Alaska with a bunch of "down on their luck" people to look for riches mining gold. Jack Hoffman apparently had some experience with gold mining, but the rest of the team were quite clueless. Predictably, the struck it bust. In Season 3 the Hoffmans seem to be marginally more knowledgeable, and they have gotten more capital behind their operation. Also you have Fred Hurt, who is the "bad guy" (I take it as he is only a bad guy because he knows what he is doing), who took over the Hoffmans' first claim in season 2 (they missed a rental payment, which allowed Fred to purchase it. There is also Parker Schnabel, who is a teenager that is mining a family claim next to Fred. Parker is criticized in Facebook as being a hot head, but quite frankly, he behaves a lot more maturely than I did when I was his age.

In this series the Hoffmans continue to do everything wrong. They seem to be totally clueless about planning, how they allocate manpower, and equipment they purchase. The only thing that saves them is one of their team, Dave Turin, is mining another claim, and he gets results. I find the Hoffmans to be personally annoying with their hyperbole (they talk repeatedly about becoming millionaires) and their substitution of religious zeal for competence - they even named their company "3:16 Mining".

Fred Hurt does well, but he is plagued by mechanical breakdowns - I love watching how he manages to fix his equipment with bubble gum and bailing wire. He's obviously on a shoe string budget, but he knows what he is doing. Parker Schnabel seems to be working a claim that is pretty well payed out, so no amount of competence may be able to save him.

Why isn't the behind the scenes shows "The Dirt" a part of the regular season on iTunes and Amazon? These are the only avenue I have to see Gold Rush. Apparently since I paid up front I am a second-class viewer -- or maybe a sucker.

My husband and I have always enjoyed the Gold Rush show. We have enjoyed all three series. It's real, exciting, down to earth and just great family entertainment. You get the feeling you're actually looking for gold right there in your living room. It makes us want to get out and find some real gold. Amazon makes it possible for us to enjoy watching the Gold Rush without having to pay high cable or satelite bills each month. In today's times with the economy being in such bad shape I thank God for Amazon.

Here i am again watching season three and this season was just as big as the 2nd season actually it was even bigger. This season the hoffman crew ends up with more equipment and two groups mining two different claims. Other then that group Fred came back with his son and so did parker at his grandpa's mine at the big nugget. I have found myself hoping fred would fail more and more every week just because he up and bought the claim from right under the hoffman's group last season. So you would be surprised to find out in season 4 i have found my self hoping fred will do good and find gold for whatever reason he has grown on me i know sad right. I would recommend this season and when you down go give season 4 a try. After season 4 i will be working my way over to season 5 and beyond. I really am addicted to this show right now and i don't know what i will do with myself when i watch the final episode.

We love this series, though it is a bit over the top in drama. Also hard to figure out how much reality it is, but it seems close. One objection is all the repeat information after what are would be commercial breaks when this was on the tube. That's the way it goes so you just have to scan over the duplicating info.

Stupid is as stupid does. What a cluster f.... mess These poor souls find disaster everyway they go. I finally started feeling sorry for them but most of there woes they bring on themselves. If you are really bored maybe watch it.

This show has improved each year, there is less 'edited in' drama, and more gold mining. You start to enjoy the miners for who they are, even though they all have quirks. Strange people? Yes. Should they be gold miners? No. Should Todd shave that Road Kill thing off his chin? Oh my yes!
