I bought this hub since it uses VIA VL812 chip (compatible with Windows 8, as the Uspeed slim 4-port usb3.0 hub with VL812 chip works well on my system, but it has only 4 ports), and provides 7 usb 3.0 ports. When plugged to the USB3.0 port of my Thinkpad X1 Carbon laptop, it caused Windows 8 to produce "device disconnect" sound incessantly, even if there was no device plugged onto the hub. At first I thought there was some software incompatibility. I tried to re-install Windows 8, but the incessant sound cannot be removed as long as the hub was connected to the laptop, so it was not caused by software incompatibility. I tried Windows 7, but the annoying sound went on. I asked Microsoft, and it confirmed the problem was caused by certain hardware. Yes, as long as the hub wasn't connected, there was no problem at all. All what I did to get rid of the stupid sound was stupid. The hub had internal problem somewhere. So I am to return this defective product and leave this review.

I was looking for a USB 3.0 hub to centralize all USB accessory connections on my desk, for my somewhat remotely-located computer. Although this hub is a bit expensive, it works well and it has an added feature, which has proven to be very useful. One of the USB ports is a 2A charging port (it has no data connection, only power). This is very convenient because I do not need a separate USB charger on my desk to charge my iPad or other USB devices. I keep this hub hidden behind my monitor with a cable connected to the charging port; so I now have all necessary data connections and a quick charging station at my fingertips.

One note: if you use this hub with Mac OSX Lion 10.8.2 (or greater), the hub requires a firmware update to work properly. This is due to the way Lion handles USB 3.0 power switching. Possibly Anker is now including the newer firmware in these hubs. If not, you can download the firmware and updater software from their website. The only inconvenience with this process is that the firmware update must be run on a Windows computer (not a great solution for those people who need the update because they are using a Mac).

Does not work properly.

This device prevents my MacBook Pro from waking from sleep. I have my mouse plugged into the hub, and I must unplug the hub and revert to using the trackpad. After about a minute of pressing random keys, the computer will wake up and work again. Plug the hub & mouse bak in and all is well until the computer goes to sleep. Then torment once again.

Computer works perfectly when the mouse is plugged directly into the computer.

Works great, reliable, love the power port, and Anker service is excellent. I purchased a different hub from them, had issues with it, and returned it for this one. I then thought I was having issues with this one as well, but it was after the 30-day return window with Amazon, so I contacted them, and they quickly issued a return label so I could send it in for repair. I just wish there was a way to make a port that could be remotely switched between power only and data, so I could plug my phone into it to charge without connecting to the computer, but be able to connect it without having to switch the cord to a different port.

When I first received the Hub from Anker, I was having some problems with Windows 8, whenever I booted my machine (from power off) with the USB hub, I would get a constant beeping notification from Windows, like a device was being plugged/unplugged, though everything worked fine. If I rebooted the machine, then the beeping went away.

Anker contacted me, to see if I was having any issues, to which I replied with the above information. They got back to me with a suggest fix (making sure my firmware was up to date for my USB 3.0 board on the system). After performing this update the beeping has gone away.

Big thanks to Anker for reaching out and helping me resolve this issue without me contacting them first.

This USB hub works great, and it is nice to have the extra charging port in there as well for the numerous devices I have around that always need charged.

Warning. My copy of this is clearly defective, but defective in a VERY bad way. USB ports normally supply +5V on the postive rail, but this powered hub provides +12v to the ports. Upon arrival, I tested it out with a device, which did not work. I tried another device, which didn't work either. I fortunately stopped at that point and did some further testing, only permanently destroying two relatively low-cost USB devices. Thank god I hadn't plugged in a phone, SLR, etc. to this.

Although this defective product is probably an anomaly, there should be some degree of QC before a device like this leaves the factory, as it could easily destroy thousands of dollars of equipment in a fraction of a second. I certainly will never be buying another "Anker" product again.

My last USB hub died so I bought this one. Works great, USB 3.0 speed is nice. My only complaint, and I know this is very minor, is that there is no under desk mounting kit for it. My last two USB 2.0 hubs both had metal brackets I could attach under my desk and have a solid mounting surface. Technically, works perfect on my Mac.....I put double sided tape on it to mount, just wish it had a bracket. That would have given it 5 stars.
