Product description

MythTV Android Frontend is the first Android Client fully endorsed by the core MythTV Development Team.

If you plan to use this application, you are required to have a fully functioning MythTV Backend version .25 or greater. If you are interested in learning more about MythTV, check the web site at http://mythtv.org.

An External Video Player is also required. We have done extensive testing with VPlayer and DicePlayer, but feel free to try any video player capable of playing HTTP Live Streams.

This application can connect to your backend both while you are at home or on the go. At home, the app will scan your network for a MythTV backend and auto-configure its connection. If you want connect to the backend while away from home, check out our instructions on how to set this up at https://github.com/MythTV-Clients/MythTV-Android-Frontend/wiki/Access-MythTV-Master-Backend-via-SSH.

With this application you can access your recordings and stream them to your Android phone or tablet via MythTV HTTP Live Streaming, introduced in MythTV version .25. You can see what is upcoming or the whole program guide as well as access your recording rules. You can also manage your Playback Profiles so that you can raise or lower the streaming quality of your recordings depending on the speed of your network.

MythMote is fully integrated into the application. When you use MythMote, your MythTV Frontends will be automatically discovered for you. Simply select the Frontend you are sitting in front of, and begin navigating. As an added bonus, if you receive a call while using MythMote, the Caller ID information will be displayed on the TV for you.

MythTV Android Frontend is 100% Open Source software and it is licensed under the GPLv3. You can follow the progress of the application at https://github.com/MythTV-Clients/MythTV-Android-Frontend. Here you will also see an explanation of the permissions the application requires.

Want to request a feature or ran into an issue, please submit an issue on the Issues tab of our github repository:

I'm a serious mythtv user with rather a substantial setup. I put this on the Kindle because it was the official app and so we could peek at our content from the tablet.

First off, I could not find a free streamer so I had to try the demoware player. This is not a nit about this app, but sort of a heads up to anyone who wants to try it. As far as I can tell you will have to purchase a video player for the Fire (there are free apps for regular androids).

I understand this is a beta test so things will get fixed in time.

The biggest problem with the app is as far as content goes the only thing you can view right now is television you have already recorded ("recordings"). No support yet for your movie library ("videos") nor for live TV.

Another downside is that I cannot seem to do commercial skips either (I'm pretty sure this is a shortcoming of the video player app and not the mythtv frontend app, but again it is something people want to know when deciding about trying out this app).

It is handy to be able to look at the TV listings and the upcoming recording schedule. But for some reason this app is constantly refreshing and popping up three refresh status messages all the time, even when this app isn't on top. Furthermore I have not found a way to turn off (or set the delay between) such refreshes nor have I found a way to turn off those relentless status messages.

It is handy that mythmote is now integrated into this app. (Unfortunately for me, ever since I upgraded to Mythbuntu 12.04 I haven't been able to get my frontends to accept being remote controlled ... not this app's fault about that though ... perhaps when I switch to LMDE based mythtv that will be fixed).

I really want to love this app. But it is a beta and that shows.

If you are pretty handy with myth and you want this gadget and you are willing to put up with the frustrations that are part of this beta, then download this app and be part of the beta testing.

If you are looking for something that you can use as basically a tablet sized frontend, then you might wish to wait before getting this app. (BTW, this app is better on a regular android -- if you have both, then try that tablet instead of using the Fire).

It kind of worked, but wasn't really capable of doing much. Good thing it was free. Seems to have potential.

I found a couple free media players to try the streaming functionality and it seemed to work. I hope to use this for when I'm lazing on the porch this summer, replacing the hot, bulky, bad audio, battery hogging laptop I had been using.
Mythmote doesn't work. Working with recording schedules is missing. The groundwork is there for a very cool app. Commendations to the devs for taking the time to do this. I love mythtv and being able to watch recordings around the property on the laptop. This app is going to make it so much nicer to enjoy myth on tablets, when they get it out of beta. Again, kudos to the devs.
Wishful thinking but just imagine all the functionality of a full fledged mythfrontend on a tablet!

It's missing some features (coming soon!) like the ability to watch stored movies and listen to stored music. However, the product is still in beta so I'm not too concerned. The built-in Mythmote is the best I've used. The app requires almost no effort to setup and works "out of the box". As soon as I can stream movies, this app will get 5/5!

Works on Kindle HD. I can watch 1080 recordings (using aVia) easily. The guide needs work but for a "beta" release it is quite useful connecting to my MythTV server. Even my Mom can use it.
Keep up the good work!

Some of the features don't work at all, and the buttons of the remote are a bit awkward: left and right arrows do fast cue during playback, not skip. Also the program listings started progressively losing channels and now won't load at all. But for checking upcoming recordings and a remote that doesn't need line of sight, I'm glad I have this.
