I just wanted to figure out an easy way to play blu-ray discs on my PC, so initially considered purchasing a generic blu-ray player from Amazon for about $50. I then realized that for another ~$50 I could have a way of copying all my family pictures and videos on to blu-ray discs. I use carbonite and an external hard drive for daily backups, but I can put the blu-ray discs in a fire-proof box and forget about them. The 506BA model got a good review from a major PC magazine, so I figured newer 506BB version might be just as good. The drive is very compact and lightweight. The case is plastic. It seems a bit fragile -- if you step on it by mistake I have no doubt the case will crack and the drive will be destroyed. But not many people tend to walk on blu-ray drives, so that's probably not a problem. The drive is very quiet -- can't even hear it with blu-ray video playing. The size and weight is such that I can easily put this into a laptop bag and take it on the road with me. Trial software packages to play blu-rays and do other media related things were included with the drive but I did not use them. Instead I installed the free versions of DVDFab Passkey 8 and VSO Media Player, as suggested by some other reviewer named Bman, and I'm watching the blu-ray discs from Netflix without a problem. I'm happy with this purchase, though at ~$97 it's pricier than what I initially thought I wanted.

I bought this to start ripping Blu-rays that I own into iTunes Movies. The drive works great provided you use the right software, MakeMKV and Handbrake. Another pro about the drive is it only requires 1 USB 2.0 port.

Product works well out of the box with Mac OS X Mountain Lion for DVD's and CD's, but not Blu-ray. Included software is for PC only. If you need to watch, burn, or rip Blu-ray content on your Mac, you'll need 3rd party software. A few "free" or open-source options to consider are: VLC Media Player, Make MKV (for ripping), and Handbrake (for conversion/compression of MKV files to iTunes or Apple TV compatible format). The drive is convenient in that it doesn't require a secondary power supply, just a single USB connection for power and data.

I purchased this item solely for the purpose of being able to watch Blu Ray on my Macbook Pro which is about a year old. This product can potentially do a lot of things so wading through them to find if this product can work for what you need can be a challenge. So if you want to watch a Blu Ray Disc on your Mac-This is for you.

There are some reviewers that just state, "Plug and Play. This item is great!" Well, plug and play for what? Unless you already have some software that most people don't have on their Mac's this USB Drive is NOT plug and play and needs additional software purchased to allow you to actually view a Blu Ray movie.

Out of the box you can see that the item is a good size to travel with and contains only a USB cord. Very nice that it powers itself from the computer vs. having to plug in the wall. I have heard some of these Blu Ray drives need two USB ports but indeed this one just needs one. Immediately my MAC showed the Blu Ray movie as a BD on my desktop, but when I click on the disc it showed a bunch of files-not of which would play on my MAC. I tried iTunes but that did not recognize the disc and I also have Toast Titanium which also would not play the Blu Ray. So as I sifted through the reviews-thankfully another person mentioned that a software program to download is MacGo. It's $46 total right now-so not cheap but it allows you to download a trial copy which shows a watermark across the disc. I recommend this first to test it as you can always purchase the real thing after the test-which is exactly what I did. I tested this drive with 7 different Blu Ray's from movies to TV shows from new movies to old and all of them played like a dream and were beautiful on the MAC.

I purchased this about 18 months ago. For the first year of minimal use, it worked great. I only made a few blu-ray discs -- went through one spindle of about 30 discs in a year, vacations, school plays, etc. Not heavy use. Last summer, I tried burning a blu-ray disc I'd edited in Adobe Premiere Elements 10, and burn after burn came out glitchy -- video would freeze randomly and repeatedly. The DVD I'd burned with the computer's internal DVD writer played back fine, so I'm sure the problem was not with the software. This spring, I tired burning a blu-ray disc of another video I'd edited. In Windows Explorer, the drive appears, but when I put in a blank disc, it prompts me to insert blank media. In Premiere, I've had a problem where I get one of two messages: Either the drive is not seen by the program at all and does not appear on my list of burners or it is recognized but says that Media is not present, when it is.

I've called for support at Samsung. You should know that Samsung apparently does not manufacture nor support this product even though they put their log on it. Try finding it on the Samsung website. I chatted with their online support and was told to contact a third party called TSSTODD (The first TS stands for "Toshiba Samsung", the ODD for "Optical Disc Drive", though after my experience I can think of a more colorful interpretation of the abbreviation "TS"). TSSTODD's support was useless. I'd asked about drivers and firmware and was told there are no additional drivers for the product and firmware changes were minimal and should be avoided because they could turn your device into a brick.

Since my device wasn't working, I figured I had nothing to lose, so I downloaded the firmware installer from the TSSTODD site.
