About the Author

David Drake was attending Duke University Law School when he was drafted. He served the next two years in the Army, spending 1970 as an enlisted interrogator with the 11th armored Cavalry in Viet Nam and Cambodia. Upon return he completed his law degree at Duke and was for eight years Assistant Town Attorney for Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He has been a full-time freelance writer since 1981. His books include the genre-defining and bestselling “Hammer’s Slammers” series, the “RCN” series including In the Stormy Red Sky, The Way to Glory, and many more. --This text refers to the paperback edition.

The Army took David Drake from Duke Law School and sent him on a motorized tour of Viet Nam and Cambodia with the 11th Cav, the Blackhorse. He learned new skills, saw interesting sights, and met exotic people who hadn't run fast enough to get away.

Dave returned to become Chapel Hill's Assistant Town Attorney and to try to put his life back together through fiction making sense of his Army experiences.

Dave describes war from where he saw it: the loader's hatch of a tank in Cambodia. His military experience, combined with his formal education in history and Latin, has made him one of the foremost writers of realistic action SF and fantasy. His bestselling Hammer's Slammers series is credited with creating the genre of modern Military SF. He often wishes he had a less interesting background.

Dave lives with his family in rural North Carolina.

Decent read, action adventure,hard to out down

Not one of Drake's best, but he has some very good books. Even bad drake is worth a read. If you want an action book that is hard to to out down think you will enjoy this book. I think this is one of his earlier efforts. His writing has improved over time for sure to the point I would beg and pester him (politely) to keep putting his good stuff

The plot of both stories in the book seem almost incidental as the main character spends most of the time dwelling on his hatred and contempt for authority. I spent much of my time as I was reading just wishing the story would move on to something more interesting, for example: there are two overly long sex scenes ( one in each story) that came about with little justification and added nothing to the story. The only reason I can imagine for this being published is to capitalize on (and exploit) the good reputation Drake has gained from latter (better) work.

The two books which have been put together in this volume are classic hard boiled detective in sci fi. The world is recognizable, albeit a now incongruous Cold War era.

Nonetheless, the writing is excellent as always; the characters and action feel real, and the plot is completely believable.

If you're looking for Utopian futuristic fiction, this won't be for you.

In this era of Snowden, Prism, and so forth - a tale before its time, albeit one that still has some bit of a happy ending.
