I got an "instant" pressure cooker last Christmas, but I was hesitant to try it for our favorite barbecue recipes. My husband and I usually cook our pork bbq slow and low over actual hickory wood, but there are times when I want the flavor without the fire. I had been looking for liquid smoke in my local grocery stores, but all their products were full of artificial flavorings. So I decided to try to find a hickory smoke additive online that is just smoke, and the reviews for this brand are great. I received the bottle unbroken and sealed but there are little discolorations in the bottle. I think this must be the natural settling of the smoky liquid. Anyway, I have used it 3 times for instant baby back ribs. I've received rave reviews from family and friends. They actually thought I had cooked all day over a fire. This is my new bbq boss secret weapon.

Just smoke and water

Unlike most smoke flavoring products, this is just smoke and water; there is no added sugar, soy sauce, thickener, or any of the other extras found in most brands. The smoke aroma is very strong. I keep my closed bottle inside two plastic bags, else my pantry smells smoky. For the best results add this near the end of the cooking cycle as the aroma can cook away. In addition to flavoring my famous pulled pork, I have an unusual application for this product. Some plants, such as Matalija poppy, produce seeds that will not germinate without exposure to smoke; they lie dormant in the soil until a fire has burned through. I have had success germinating these seeds after soaking them in a dilute solution of this product. Other brands of liquid smoke do not work as well or do not work at all.

I've never used liquid smoke before, but I purchased this item based on a food blogger's recommendation. I like that this product is nothing but liquid smoke; no additives or preservatives whatsoever. My bottle was not sealed perfectly so I could smell the smoke through the cardboard box it shipped in; the label was slightly stained but not sticky, even though the plastic seal around the cap was intact. I keep this stored in my pantry inside a sealed zip-top baggie and am not able to smell it at all anymore, but know that if you don't take a similar precaution, your pantry will smell like hickory smoke.

I initially bought this to use when making pork roasts - and it did add a great hickory smoke flavor to that meal - but when preparing a meal to share with some vegetarian friends I realized that one recipe in which I normally include bacon wouldn't work. The recipe just isn't as great without the bacon flavor, so I added in a few drops of this liquid smoke which stood in pretty well as a substitute (even to this bacon-loving family). I was really happy to have thought of that fix, and it makes keeping a bottle of liquid smoke in my pantry that much more justifiable.

I love this liquid smoke and buy it by the quart! I bought a small bottle at first and then did research on how the various liquid smokes were made. When you open Wright's it smells like a campfire! The others have chemical smells. I love to spritz it on my eggs, steaks, hamburgers, chicken and wild caught Alaska salmon. I use it to cut down on salt.

This product is good, and maybe that is why it is expensive... I have never tried a similar product, but, this one is good.. I just use it on hamburger meat, but, I am sure it has other uses.. The issue I make is the price, but, how would know how hard it is to make this stuff.. maybe it should be more expensive, but, if you are okay with the price, you will happy with the flavor!!!! Get several bottles, as this stuff goes fast!!!!

Made from nothing more than smoke and water, no chemicals here and wonderful on all kinds of food. Also extremely useful if you are a gardener who enjoys growing California native plants, Australian plants, or any other type of plant from seed that is responsive to smoke or/and fire. You simply make a dilute solution with water and soak them overnight (or until swollen) and then plant as you would any other seed. Much safer and faster than using actual fire to speed germination of smoke-responsive seeds!

They did have it packaged up really well in plastic so it didn't get on anything. However, I still had to wash the outside of the bottle with soap and water to get that smoke smell off. All good though.
