I bought this cooler in January of 2013 for my then-new Sony Vaio laptop. I was planning to use the laptop as my main computer, connected to a larger monitor, keyboard, etc., basically as a desktop but I could travel with it as needed. I used it for video editing as well as general word processing and web surfing. It was top of the line and I wanted it to last so I bought this cooler for it to live on. The computer is still working fine. Ten years later to the month, the cooler started getting noisy and finally stopped working. To be clear, since I never shut off the computer when at home, this cooler had been running almost continuously for TEN YEARS before it finally died. In my book, that's a pretty good investment.

Aside from the headline, it's good. Works well enough and keeps my pc a bit cooler while running games like the new cod and red dead redemption 2. Fit's my 15-inch laptop, plugs into your USB port, and can fit in your backpack almost seamlessly. The noise level is fine for having one big fan, and the cooling is distributed evenly. Keeps the laptop fans from engaging at full power, so I take that as being worth it. I would suggest you try it out. If you don't like it, feel free to return it and snag something else.

I did a lot of research and review reading before choosing this cooling pad for my 17" MacBook Pro which runs very hot when charging a battery & when using Photoshop CS6 for intensive design work and also when client computers are connected to it for repair of those units (running TechTool, DiskWarrior, etc.). Recently the OEM battery ended up splitting apart -- now that could be from heat OR defect or both -- and I didn't want to have the same issue with the replacement battery which is brand new (non-Apple) and not cheap. The pad is JUST big enough to hold the 17" MacBook. It made a huge difference within minutes of being used with the laptop charging a battery and displaying a movie! The top surface near the screen would normally get very hot when a battery was being charged especially, but within minutes of the cool pad being in use, the surface is barely lukewarm. The bottom of the laptop which gets very hot during battery charging and intensive use was/is many degrees cooler.

PROS:
* Very open design allowing for maximum air flow from all sides.
* Sturdy metal grill over the whole top surface (probably aluminum, though it feels a bit rigid for it to be pure aluminum).
* Excellent air flow! More than I expected, actually.
* VERY quiet (21dBA according to manufacturer specs.)!! The typical laptop cooling laptop fans (for both Macs. & PCs) are far louder and, in the case of my MacBook Pro, would completely drown out any noise coming from this cooling pad (when running at full speed). Definite bonus to have the cooling pad running with very little noise!
* Very sturdy and quite big rubber feet on the bottom ensure that slipping on surfaces isn't likely. With the added weight of a laptop sitting on the cooling pad, I don't see how it would move even if cords are accidentally yanked.
* Speaking of cords, the channel underneath the unit for the USB cord is very well designed and effectively keeps excess cord length out of the way.
* Nice long USB cord so the unit can be plugged into any available USB port on any laptop -- be it on the sides or the back.
* Pass through feature on the plug is very handy for laptops with limited USB ports available. Since the plug is a bit "chunky" some may not like to deal with it on the sides of their laptops -- especially Mac. users -- so I'll note that the cooling pad DOES work just as effectively when plugged into a USB hub. This is where the additional cord length would come in handy as well. I didn't try it with a USB power unit plugged into a wall outlet, so I can't say if that would work -- though I can't see why it wouldn't.
* Flip down feet on the back bottom surface allows for tilting of the laptop. Handy because the cool pad does raise the computer up about 2". The angling "feet" would also serve to increase airflow even more.
* Stays on even when the laptop is put into "sleep" mode -- at least with Macs. it does. Some of that will be dependent on laptop make and model.... Many PC laptops cut power to USB ports when in "sleep" or "suspend" mode.

CONS:
* Minor --- do wish the product came in at least a silver/aluminum finish.
* Minor to Moderate --- would be nice if the unit had an optional power adapter connection for those who don't want the unit to drain power from a laptop running on battery power. Also, as noted above in the pros section, some laptops cut power to USB ports when in "sleep" or "suspend" mode and all do so when the computer is turned off. This is a con because those computers are still capable of charging batteries and, thereby, heating up. Macs. especially get very warm while charging batteries. So, how big a con this is depends on your individual computer's functions.
* Moderate --- the pass through connector could & should be much smaller. It sticks out quite a bit and I can see how someone could damage the USB port by hitting the connector accidentally. This risk is only magnified when another USB device is piggy-backed onto the already big connector. This is also where a power adapter would come in handy so users wouldn't have to plug it into their USB ports, thereby eliminating the risk of damage. The plug itself if well constructed and quite sturdy, but, because it IS so tough, the ports could easily sustain damage from accidental impact.

NOTE:
The cooling pad has a raised center grill directly above the fan. I note this only because I'm not sure there isn't a laptop out there somewhere which doesn't have "feet" to keep it slightly raised above the surface it rests on. If your laptop doesn't have "feet" you may have some difficulty resting it with any stability on this cooling pad.

CONCLUSION:
All in all, I'm very happy with this cooling pad and would definitely purchase it again. As an Apple tech. support provider, I'll also be recommending this cooling pad to my clients! If you have an Apple laptop that you use for more than just surfing the web and word processing, this cooling pad is an indispensable tool to extend the life of your computer's hardware. You don't need fancy LED lights, etc., which just draw more power.... A cooling fan just needs to cool a laptop efficiently & effectively... That's what this unit does and does it well!

The primary reason for this equation is to cool the laptop and it does an excellent job. The added height requires getting used to but not bad after adjusting. The fan is noticeable but becomes "white noise" after a while. Using external speakers for sound completely covers the fan noise when listening to music.

I replaced a different Cooler Master model (also single fan, had LED's and stuff) with this one because it broke. That one kept my laptop very, very cool. The laptop was running full loads during games and rendering while remaining cool to the touch. This cooler simply doesn't work to that extent. The laptop doesn't overheat, so yeah, the cooler is doing its job to an extent. But comparing the cooling to the other model is like night and day. With this model, it remains hot to the touch during regular loads, like browsing the web. Face it, you're probably getting this because your laptop gets hot, and this will not help it all that much.

Not to mention, this one is far louder than my old one. I really don't mind the noise, but for the sake of the review, I'm comparing it to a better product which was quieter.

I do like the thin profile and the fact that you can hide the cable. It's also easy to store with its simple rectangular shape. I got it because of these factors, and because it doesn't have LED lighting, which is a useless power drain to me. However, I'll probably go back to an LED lit Cooler Master fan when this one breaks, because that one just performs better. Yeah, the other Cooler Master was bulky, hard to store, and had unnecessary controls and inputs, but it worked better. As for other laptop cooler brands, I don't know; I stick to Cooler Master because they make good fans for other stuff, like PC cases.

TL;DR: Don't buy this one. Spend more and get a fancier Cooler Master laptop cooler. Even if you don't need the LED lighting and fan controls that come with a more expensive option, it will perform its single main duty better: cooling.

RESUMEN: Ventilador de amplia duración para algo que se notaba muy sencillo y frágil (cosa que no lo es), conectores decentes de un buen material. Llevo 2 meses con el ventilador y no me ha dado fallas (lo utilizo en jornadas de 12 horas o más). Ha disminuido el calentamiento de mi pc un %20 aprox. Venía bien empacado y protegido. Hoy es 1 de Julio del 2018. mañana cumplo 2 meses con el ventilador; para ser sinceros pensé que me duraría menos de 1 mes jajaja
Este ventilador lo he utilizado todos los días en jornadas de más de 12 horas diarias o a veces hasta más, realmente ha durado demasiado para ello (Recomiendo comprar un bote de aire comprimido y limpiarlo cada 15-20 días para que no se le junte el polvo, aunque regularmente no se le junta mucho). Es un ventilador muy sencillo la verdad, pensé que no serviría para enfriar mi laptop ya que regularmente la utilizo para jugar juegos de alta capacidad. Antes la pc se calentaba hasta 90 grados y cuando la utilizaba sólo para estar en el navegador llegaba a 60, ahora cuando juego no llega ni a los 75, un ventilador realmente muy funcional para algo que se veía tan sencillo y frágil (Obviamente debes tener cuidado con los cables.

La entrada que tiene el conector no se a dañado, por lo visto es de un buen material. Detecta bien las usb's cable no tan grueso pero de un material de plástico contra rompeduras.
El ventilador es algo silencioso, no suena casi nada.
Calificación 10/10.
Entrega rápida y super bien empacado, venía con sus burbujas protectoras y la caja venía sin maltratar

En un mes actualizaré sobre su estado si es necesario

Base of my laptop is a lot cooler to the touch however I likely have only noticed a minor drop in temps since getting it. My Lenovo Y50 FHD gaming laptop from 2014 experiences serious thermal throttling in the summer months for the last 3 years when the ambient room temp is high. I only recently considered getting a cooling pad. This was priced well and does an okay job. Read further for a more extensive opinion about laptops + heat.

Luckily this one is quiet, durable and seems to be helping a tiny bit. However in the long run dont expect drastic (like 10 degrees Celsius) temperature decreases. I've noticed maybe a 1-3 degree drop which is mainly due to better airflow under the laptop where the main intake vent is located.

In all honesty if you're having bad temps while gaming on your desk, consider re-pasting which will evidently cost you the same as this pad ($20CAD for AS5), cleaning fans + heat sink. I've done these and can still hit 98c which throttles games so my solution was to combine all these things (This cooling pad + re-pasting + Throttlestop to disable turbo and lock my cpu at a constant 2.4Ghz + undervolting -50mv and finally using a fan 'mod' software found online specifically for lenovo laptops to reduce temps).

For the most part I longer get throttling while still being able to maintain reasonable performance, but lesson learned: Do extensive research on a laptop's cooling system before purchasing if you're considering a gaming laptop. I've opened mine up several times and I can tell you that a high performance 3.4Ghz (at turbo) cpu + 1Ghz GPU (core) reallllly needed sepearte heat pipes and not just one connected to two sh*tty fans that dont even spin on max unless you use 3rd party software to alter the controller on the board locked by BIOS. I cant speak for cooling pads geared towards "gaming" as that may be branding but in short:

This pad has made a minor yet NOTICABLE difference. I can personally feel the base of the laptop and consider it "warm" now where as before It was quite clearly HOT.

Note: As for the pass-through USB component, it works just fine and outputs enough power to allow a standard wired Xbox360 controller to work just fine.

Update: Had this for many months now. Got myself a new Asus GL502VSK gaming laptop and gave my old Y50 to my girlfriend and was not willing to part with my X-Slim so I actually purchased a second so we both have one. Really helps to keep temps reasonable and if anything the function to allows us to tilt the keyboard is super nice as it puts far less strain on our wrists while gaming for over 2 hurs.

UPDATE: 3 years later, running 24x7, still going strong, no issues cooling the same router. I occasionally give it a blast of compressed air to clean out accumulated dust. Bumped up my review to 5 stars. Noise is now not noticeable -- my desktop's case fans are louder (or I've already gotten used to it), and reliability is top notch!

ORIGINAL REVIEW: Using this to cool my Asus RT-87U router. The mesh allowed me to install screws to mount the router. I use hooks to hang the whole thing on my wall. I observed the router was running relatively cooler even on a hot day so the product fit my use. Deducted 1star due to the product not having an on/off switch and being a bit noisy. Overall happy with the product.

It's not at all silent as advertised, which is surprising for the size of the fan inside. It's distractingly loud to the point I've returned it and will look at other brands.
