Product Description
Full Android Tablet
The XO Tablet features a high-resolution screen, dual-core processor, and the latest Android operating system.
Parental Controls
Parental dashboards track usage and learning styles, allowing parents to better understand their child's development.
Educational Curriculum
Lessons draw from the top names in education, including Oxford University and Discovery Communication.
Bilingual
All content is available in both English and Spanish. With one tap, users can easily switch between languages.
Bilingual
Before the age of 12 every child can naturally learn multiple languages. To foster this ability the XO tablet comes with full content in both English and Spanish. All of the Dreams offer their apps, books, games, videos and other content in both languages with just the press of one icon.
E Book Reader
Many studies have shown that reading improves overall academic performance and learning. The XO Tablet has an e-book reader designed especially for children to foster an appreciation for the fun of learning.
Special features include the ability to look up the meaning of any word and to translate text from one language to another for non-native English speakers. All of the free e-books on the XO tablet come alive with this special e-book reader.
Dashboard
One of the untapped areas to improve child learning is to help parents to more actively participate and guide their children's tablet usage. The XO Tablet comes with three dashboards to help parents better understand their children's intellectual development.
One dashboard captures usage in terms of the famous Gardner Learning Styles, another shows which Dreams are the most popular and the third shows usage by type of content--apps, games, and books.
Journal
While parental controls are a requirement for any modern connected device, sometimes it is more helpful to review more detailed usage of the tablet. The XO Journal feature captures every usage by the child of the tablet, including web pages visited, apps, games, downloads and files and documents created.
Android
Tablets are always a family device shared by children, parents and even grandparents. The XO Tablet is the perfect solution: a full-fledged Android tablet with Google Play for older users and the educational tablet with its own app store for children. Press one icon and the tablet changes to match the user. Parents set controls to limit child access to the Android version.
Parental Controls
Everyone wants children to explore the rich content of the Internet. However, we need to protect children and provide age appropriate content. The XO Tablet allows the parent to set up password protected user privileges for up to three children and to limit access to the Internet, app store purchases and talk and chat features. As the child matures these privileges can be changed.
What's in the Box?
Vivitar XO Tablet, bumper case, charger, and 100+ preinstalled apps.

Hardware: Can't expect iPad like responsiveness, you get what you pay for. Docked one star because I had to swap the provided charging cable for a different one after about 6 months.
NET: Positive device for young learners, lets you block/prevent install of time wasting games like Angry Birds.
Detail:
The hardware behind this product is commodity, nothing special, produced at the lowest cost to put out a functional hardware product and if you try to compare it to any Apple iPad you will be disappointed. Being associated with the XO Community however gives this tablet the edge over its competition in its software. Some comparable priced tablets have great parental controls (like this one does) but you have to go out into the play store and find the apps that you want your child to have access to. I don't have time for that, screening them for accuracy and effectiveness, evaluating two or three great math apps and then buying the full version to avoid the ads, etc. Repeat that for all the categories of learning you want your children to be exposed to, athletics, math, engineering, medicine, English, etc. I REALLY don't have time for that.
This tablet comes pre-loaded with hundreds of games and education apps for a wide age range(4-12), at 4 my daughter picked up and played 6 to 9 games with little or no parent involvement. A few others she found were cooperative play games we do together, just about all of them can be played with no internet access (A BIG positive for families on the go).
I went through and unchecked the apps that I knew were more advanced so she doesn't have to wade through as many, and added a couple of our favorites, Pandora and Netflix. Those apps have worked fine.
I docked a star because the cable that came with the device stopped working after about 6 months, replaced the charging cable and plug (to something smaller) and have had no charge issues since. I would hesitate to let the younger kids plug this in themselves to avoid damage as they "try harder" to get it to plug/charge correctly.
NOTE: One "must have" app we have to do without on this version of the tablet (The vivitar XO 780) is Reading Rainbow. We have continued to subscribe to RR, however have to let her use one of our tablets for that. I don't know if the XO-880 with KitKat (Android 4.4) would have the same issue). I didn't dock any stars from this review for that because it is Reading Rainbow that has a list of supported hardware and this Vivitar device just is not on the list.
A few days ago I realized that there was no charging light when the charger was plugged in. After determining that there was nothing wrong with the charger itself, I asked our computer repair person to have a look at the tablet, at which point he reported that the casing for the USB charge slot had come loose inside the tablet. His assessment is that this would need to be welded back in place by someone using a fine precision instrument but no one is willing to take it on.
I live outside the US, so the product probably doesn't qualify for warranty. I sent an email to the XO customer service about a week ago but no response so far. I would be willing to buy another unit if I could be assured that this issue has been addressed.

This is an update to thank Sakar International for their prompt and courteous response. I am now in possession of the replacement unit. Grandson hasn't seen it yet, but he has been asking everyday. We hope this one holds up. I'm not sure but it seems to have even more features than the last time or maybe I'm just a little more savvy. I downloaded Safe Search to his profile which is one of the apps that comes with Google Play so now I can allow him some latitude with going online.
UPDATE 5/14/15: Ok, still a decent option. However, we had to have the first unit replaced under warranty when it stopped charging, and the replacement unit has now stopped turning on. It's still under warranty so hopefully this second replacement will go as smoothly as the first. Seriously though, what are the chance we got TWO lemons? Originally this review was 5-star, dropping it to 3-star as of today. The tablet is still great, but obviously has some QC issues. Leaving it at 3-stars and not 1 or 2 because customer service from XO has been great.
