I'm not really certain why I requested this book to review. Reading previews was rather disconcerting, and maybe that's why I wanted to read this book. In our part of the world, as scary as some things may be, we really have no threat of physical persecution.

In this book, The Global WAR on Christians: Dispatches from the Front Lines of Anti-Christian Persecutions, John Allen Jr. brings this unknown world to reality in ways I had not heard. Is this propaganda? I don't believe so. Yet, we move along remaining ignorant (not always our choice) because this is so under reported by the media.

Yet, interestingly, Newsweek Magazine found it important to release an issue in February 2012, which featured a cover story by Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Ali has a storied past, and is from Somalia and considers herself an atheist. Yet the cover of Newsweek in this issue is below.
It's a poignant reminder of the war which is being waged against Christians outside of the United States. What bothered me is the fact that this is well known, but so little is seemingly being done to help the innocent victims, many who are being tortured and left to live in disgusting conditions.

I can list many, many atrocities being committed against Christians, some because they are preaching Christ, some because they are simply Christian and they are not following the state mandated governments. Each chapter is separated by region of the country, as Allen gives numerous examples of crimes being committed about Christ followers.

As you read this book, you will also learn that in many of the countries where these crimes are being committed, the authorities of the country's in which these are occurring have turned a blind eye to the crimes.

If you are living in one of the Western countries of the world, while reading this blog, then the odds are very likely that you have received very minimal persecution for your religious beliefs. Oh, you may have been laughed at, given dirty looks and perhaps heard obscenities shouted at you. But you most likely have not been dragged into a concentration camp, tortured or left for dead because of your faith (and if you have been, I'm very sorry for you and pray for you). Yet, these trials are what multiplied thousands of those who call themselves Christians endure daily around the world. And that is the subject of John L. Allen Jr's book The Global War on Christians.
The title of the book makes no attempt to hide the contents and neither do the chapters. The writer begins with an overview of the subject and sharing stories from areas around the world like Africa, Asia, the Middle East and others. He then spends a few chapters discussing the myths that surround persecution, such as 'Nobody Saw It Coming'. He concludes the volume with a series of chapters which address the fallout, consequences and response of persecution. It's a wealth of material addressing this often overlooked subject and it is an eye opening education if you have never been exposed to these issues.
Overall the book is good. It's an important subject that needs addressed by many more writers. However, I did not find the book to be an easy read. It wasn't because of the subject matter, because that is important. I found the author addressing persecution well, but also lumping categories of groups as 'Christian' which some might disagree with strongly.

This is a review of THE GLOBAL WAR ON CHRISTIANS: DISPATCHES FROM THE FRONT LINES OF ANTI-CHRISTIAN PERSECUTION published in 2013 by Image in New York. The author is John L. Allen, Jr., who is the senior correspondent for the National Catholic Reporter and also the senior Vatican analyst for CNN. He has written for a number of other publications both national and international and he is the author of seven previous books.

Allen writes well and I found this book easy to read despite the frightening nature of its content. As a Christian living in what I always believed was "one nation under God," it never occurred to me my brothers and sisters in Christ around the world might be the victims of massive, systematic persecution. Allen, however, brings an impressive amount of research together to prove that Christians are indeed at risk. One authority, summarized by Allen on page. 44, concludes that "at least 90 percent of all people killed on the basis of their religious beliefs in the world today are Christians..." and the balance of this 300 page book provides gruesome examples of that.

One example involving Boko Haram in Nigeria was so heinous that it moved the Simon Wiesenthal Center to observe that "As Jews, we recognize all too well when those who want to beat down a group add humiliation and contempt to their murderous violence," and urge the European Union and the United States to protect endangered Christians in Nigeria. (p.57) It's already too late for hard-pressed Christian communities in some countries, such as North Korea (p.84) where they've almost ceased to exist.

This is a timely, if unsettling book to read. I gave it five stars and hope that it will help wake people up.
