Happy Endings

3 Seasons

Season 3
4.3 out of 5 stars (146) IMDb 7.7/10

Alex and Dave will begin dating again, trying to "keep it cazsh." But since the last time these two got together did not end well, who knows how far the romance will get this time? While "the year of Penny" is over (and was less than "ahmahzing"), Penny will continue to date and might finally find a steady boyfriend. Brad, once the biggest breadwinner of the group, was fired from his job in last year's season finale. He'll turn to Max for tips on surviving underemployment. He'll try out a variety of jobs to make ends meet, including working on a bar mitzvah hype team with Max. Max will also keep looking for the right guy, but his road to romance won't be easy either, and even kind of dangerous when he develops a crush on a physical therapist -- with hilarious consequences for Penny.

I understand that doing a DVD-R release for some shows is perhaps the most economically feasible option. FOX's Breaking In, for example, never got a good running, and few people even know of its existence, so I get why it was released on DVD-R rather than on the more reliable, more durable, and more standard DVD. Happy Endings, however, is an already established show, one with prior seasons on regular DVDs. Why can't a sense of continuity occur with the series? Why can't it have a more official, legitimate release? For a company that claims to have fought so hard for its renewal, this DVD shows nothing of the sort. It already has its own cult following, critical acclaim, and consistent moments of genuinely great television.

Five stars for the show, one star for the product. Three as an average.

I'm highly upset and disappointed with the decision to release it on DVD-R.

I am a big fan of the show Happy Endings. I'd be happy to pay a reasonable price for the third season on a physical media. $40 for a DVD-R is not reasonable. If Sony wants to gouge people who would like to be able to watch the show while away from an internet connection, well, I'll just find ...alternate... ways of watching the show when I have the urge and not part with my money.

This review is not about the show itself. My wife and I love this show and have watched the other seasons multiple times. This season would be no exception but.....

The DVDs we received are scratched and won't play all of the episodes. The DVD menus are super generic and the quality of the video is not as good as seasons 1 or 2. These come on a DVD-R, not a commercial DVD, so the back of the disc is purple. I didn't know this until after I purchased the DVDs (and wrote my first review). There's no other option to get the show on disc, so if you're trying to decide between downloading the episodes or purchasing the discs....download the episodes.

Also, for the hearing impaired, there's no subtitles.

DVD-R? Seriously? I love this show and have the first 2 seasons on DVD but there's no way I'd shell out $40+ for burned media. They should do this great show justice with a legitimate, pressed DVD release.

Do not buy this people. It's Sony way of saying F you to fans. We should not have to pay almost 40 bucks for a burnt DVD, that seems like a hobo on the street selling a bootleg copy of it. Such a awesome show should not be treated this way. ABC & Sony can do something right and give a proper season 3 DVD. It makes no sense what so ever that they can't do that. We need to let these dumb ABC executives know that we will not take this crape.

Sony spent as little money as possible putting out the final season. No extras. No captioning. And the menu backgrounds do not even feature images of the casts -- just some generic stack of televisions. I waited to buy this final season until it was less than full price, but I am still unhappy spending $29 on such an insulting effort from Sony.

Sincerely disappointed with the quality of the DVD we received. I've seen pirated DVD's of higher quality. Why does Sony and Amazon send it out in this poor shape?

$40 for a burn-on-demand release? If the sales numbers on the first two seasons don't justify a proper release for season 3, how can they expect a $40 set to sell many copies at all? You'll get less people than ever buying this one.

I was afraid they weren't going to release S3 at all, but I didn't see this wrinkle coming. I want to wait for a price reduction, but it's pretty unlikely to happen, isn't it?

Five stars for the show.

Edited to add that I eventually bought this, waiting patiently for it to be a bit cheaper. (Didn't last, it's back to $40 as of this writing.) And I have to be thankful that it got released at all, DVDR or not. It's not all great though, the episodes are in the messed-up airing order (like season 2 was) which is annoying, but I'm just glad to own all three seasons of my fave sitcom since Community went bust and pre-Goldbergs.
