In 1942, Charlie Chaplin re-released his classic 1925 silent movie, "The Gold Rush", WITH SOUND! What does this mean? Well, there's a new score--not a big problem there; a lot of silent movies had scores written for them which were played by pianists in the theaters, or sometimes larger ensembles. This one is pretty corny. BUT--Charlie narrates the whole thing! He tells you each and every thing that is happening, and whenever a character opens his mouth, Charlie dubs in the dialogue with his own very, very annoying voice. The titles have all been removed.
I could only stomach this for about 12 minutes. If you rent or buy the DVD, you should be OK, because Criterion put the 1942 version on Disc 1, and the original on Disc 2, which was certainly a curious decision. I assume if you rent it you get both discs. But after looking around, I found you could rent the original as a streaming version on iTunes. So I spent eight bucks instead of four bucks to watch it.
Having said that, the original is quite delightful. I really teared up at how cruelly The Little Fellow was treated by the women in the camp, and there was lots of funny and poignant stuff. But hopefully Amazon will correct this error and offer the original version as a streaming rental. Because the 1942 version dubbed and narrated by Chaplin really makes me wanna puke.

This is not the original version of this movie, and I didn't know it when I bought it. How disappointing, and what a rip off. Chaplin narrates the whole thing and some key scenes are left out. I enjoyed it when I watched it at first, because I had not seen the original, but now that I have, I know how sorely this version is lacking. Boo to you, Amazon, for selling me this bogus version.

As an old field geologist and prospector I love this movie. A fine history lesson as to how it must have been in the days of the Alaskan gold rush. It has it all, including laughs and a happy ending.

Chaplin fans--This is the original 1925 version of the Gold Rush. That is, it's the version audiences would have seen in 1925, rather than the later version that Chaplin released in 1942 with a ceaseless, annoying voiceover. So, if you love the Gold Rush, watch this rather than the 1942 version. I only gave it 4 stars because this isn't my favorite Chaplin movie, but many view this as one of his best films, so save yourself the headache of renting/purchasing the wrong online version and stream this one instead.

I have this version and a rather old VHS silent version which I found in a bargain bin. But I like this better for 2 reasons; 1. On the silent version the captions go by so fast I have to pause the tape to read most of them. 2. It is more interesting and complete with Charlie narrating the film. So get this one instead of the silent version for better picture and continuity. P.S. DO NOT BUY THE DVD OF THIS, IT REALLY IS A WASTE OF YOUR MONEY!

This film may be the funniest movie ever made! If you haven't seen it,buy it now!I had the priv- elage of seeing this film on the silver screen. This video edition has Chaplin's own spoken narration and musical score. The shoe-eating and cabin scenes are brilliant!"Pay Day" is one of Charlie's best short films. This film is actually about something(unlike most 90s movies). If you like this movie also see "City Lights" and "Modern Times".An all time classic! Not to be missed!

As a conductor of live orchestra silent movie screenings, I can say that Gold Rush is one of my favorite Chaplin films. If you get a chance to see the 1924 version with a live orchestra performing his adapted score, do it. you won't be disappointed!!

You don't need my review to know this is a great movie. I just wish we consumers were given the chance to purchase a version with just the music sound track without the additional dialogue. Perhaps it is just nostalgia on my part for the film I saw as a child but I find the voice in this version, which is that of Chaplin himself, at times superfluous and at its worse moments irritating.
