This season is produced by CBS Eye Productions and takes a different format from previous seasons, which were produced by Mark Burnett. Host David Bromstad seems fake, insincere, and like he's phoning it in. It's funny that he's always telling contestants to give more energy and personality for their on-camera hosting challenges. But he himself is pretty low-energy, with a flat personality. Clive Pearse was a better host on previous seasons.
This season feels really low-budget. The challenges seem smaller scale. The lighting/cinematography is harsh. The title sequence isn't as good as previous seasons. The on-air graphics and titles don't look good. The opening sequence song has a lyric, "I'm gonna be a star!" which seems really tacky. The judging room is tiny compared to previous seasons. So contestants have to enter in batches. And they sit on cheap plastic stools. The old judging room on previous seasons was huge, with a cool platform and lighting for all the contestants to step on and off of while being judged. The old judging room was really dramatic. This judging room seems cramped. There are all these "car-confessional" scenes, with the contestants revealing their innermost thoughts--while in the car. Driving to where? You never see where the contestants are going. Back to the hotel? Very bizarre.
In previous seasons the contestants lived together and re-designed their house. This season you never see where the contestants are living. Was there no budget to house the contestants? Weird. None of the contestants seemed like very good designers or carpenters. In previous seasons the contestants did their own building and carpentry, and had to finish all the rooms themselves. This season, the contestants have carpenters and painters do everything for them. That seemed weird. Other seasons the contestants seemed really skilled, creative, and talented. Not so much on this season. So disappointing.
This show is so fun and highly entertaining. I love David and all the other designers as they decide who is going to be the next Design Star. I find it fun to root for the designers as they try to do enough each week to move forward and win and become the next Design Star and get their own show. I highly recommend this to all want to be designers and just for the fun of it. A must watch.
