This might be the shortest game I've ever played. The youtube videos are true you can beat this game in 5 hours. In fact i beat it the day I got it. Wait till this hits the 5$ bin or just rent it.

This game is only 5 hours long. Is the game good? yes i guess but it should only be 20 dollars. To be honest i never played a game quite like this. Its making me dance.

The Order 1886 is one of a number of controversial releases the PS4 has had exclusive wise. Though not as bad as No Man's Sky. What made the game controversial was its short story, casual gameplay segments what with the QTE boss fights and other sections, and not much replay value.

Yet is this a bad game? No. I liked it myself as the four star Amazon review would describe it. That being said, I only just recently got it when I was able to nab it for $5. At that point, how could anyone pass that up? So then my great adventure through 6-7 narrative of the Order 1886 began and as I said previously, I like it.

This game is essentially what Uncharted would have been if it went fill on cinematic and had very little gameplay segments. As someone who mainly plays on Xbox, I almost felt at times this could have been the Playstation's very own Gears of War. It is a third person cover based shooter and any Gear player will feel right at home. The shooting sections albeit simple and not tedious, I still enjoyed. The guns were fun to shoot and I wish the game had more power weapons like the thermite gun and the tesla gun. Those were fun to use and the game could've used more. The gameplay is there, it just could've used more. Like many have noted, this game is short and definitely could have used a longer story and perhaps some additional side modes or a wave based co-op mode. This game could have been Playstation's Gears of War.

Now for the story, its great. The characters are cool, the world is cool, and its beautiful. This game a long with Uncharted 4 are two of the best looking games this generation. For the narrative, you play as Grayson or Sir Galahad, a Knight of the Order (essentially the knights of round table) who under her majesty protect from the world from all that is evil, particularly from the monstrous half breeds which in this game are lycans (werewolves) and vampires. Galahad eventually catches wind of a conspiracy and he works to unravel it. The story is great and leaves the door open for a sequel which I would like to see happen. The game is also atmospheric and does a great job putting you in late 1800s London with a mix of steampunk. The game is dark and you really feel a part of the world.

That being said, The Order: 1886 is good game. It had a good narrative, beautiful world, and I particularly like the cinematic nature. You couldn't really tell the difference between gameplay segments and cutscenes, thats how graphically good this game was. Yet it was short and gameplay segments were few and quick to get through. The game could have used a longer story and perhaps some additional modes. A co-op horde type mode would have been solid. Thus there is some potential here and Ready At Dawn certainly seems poised to do a sequel, the ball is essentially in Sony's court now.

I want video games to be video games and not interactive cinematic experiences. I am sick to death of the video game industry being ruined by casuals who only care about presentation such as graphics and story. The most important aspect of video games is gameplay but new casual gamers would not know about gameplay and even believe that QTEs count as gameplay.

If you love gameplay and you are a traditionalist REAL gamer then this "game" is not for you. Even as a movie, you can waste your time more productively with a film like Birdman, or for story you could read The Wheel of Time. Games are not meant to be played for graphics or story first and foremost. Put gameplay first, as it should be.

The Order 1886:

Pre-Release:
- New IP, Ready at Dawn delivers great games, lots of controversy surrounding the game play, cut scenes, and length.

Post Release:
- Mediocre review scores, lots of online bashing, and signs we probably will not get a sequel.

Review:
The Good: Growing up in the SNES era, one thing I miss about a generation change is the graphical leaps. I think with the PS4/XB1 we did not get that graphical leap until the launch of this game. The Order 1886 is the most beautiful game I have ever played. I spent a lot of time walking around and just looking at stuff (particularly impressive is Telsa’s workshop). The steam punk/Victorian London/ Vampire/ Werewolf setting is another highlight and the world is beautifully built. The 4 main characters are dynamic enough that I was never confused who was who and the character acting was great. There are so many video games today where I am slightly confused as to what is happening. That was never the case with The Order as the story is very tight.

The game play is your standard cover based shooter, think Uncharted but over the shoulder. I enjoyed my battles as they were in highly confined areas and at least on Hard (I only played it on Hard) they were challenging. Fighting the Werewolves was a lot of fun and the limited encounters made them special.

The set piece aboard the blimp was great and hopefully if we do get a sequel, more focus will be put on these set pieces.

The Bad:
- The game is short, not appalling short, but there could have easily been another 2-5 hours added on.
- Not having multiplayer these days is not acceptable. I probably would not have even played it but people love multiplayer.
- The black bars at the top and bottom of the screen to make it a “more cinematic” experience is not necessary… Hopefully a patch removes them. The visuals are the greatest thing this game has going for it and they should have shown more of it.
- In Uncharted, if you hit the R3 button, you can switch from a right handed line of sight to a left handed line of sight. There was no such option in The Order. I was really surprised by the lack of this mechanic.
- I started the game on hard because I wanted to get the platinum trophy, only to realize that you can beat the game on any difficulty to get the platinum.
- The platinum is incredibly easy and hard to get at the same time. All the game play/ shooting trophies are super easy to get. However the collectibles are another story, since the game doesn’t tell you what you have collected in each level, it is impossible to get the trophies without checking a game guide. You may have missed one item in level 8 of 16 but you would have no idea which item you missed unless you started from the beginning of the game checking off each item.

Conclusion:
If you own a PS4 you owe it to yourself to play this game. I loved the roughly 15 hours it took me to get the platinum and it left me only wanting more. I popped Far Cry 4 in after finishing The Order and it took a few hours before Far Cry 4 did not look awful. There are so many cool/fun/great things about this game, I just wish the flaws had not been game play mechanics that has previously been ironed out by games that came out last generation. I just hope that The Order: 1886 sells enough copies that its sequel can turn into a masterpiece it should have been ala Assassin’s Creed, Killzone, and Uncharted.

Despite its flaws I loved my experience with The Order: 1886.
