CM boasts "tactile" feel but this is nothing like a mechanical keyboard

CM boasts "tactile" feel but this is nothing like a mechanical keyboard
The CM Devastator combo is a decent peripheral combination for the price. At $29.99 you get a back lit membrane keyboard and 2000 DPI LED lit mouse in blue, red or green. The Keyboard:As membrane keyboards go, this one is a much higher quality than most. Although the box does not post numbers, most membrane keyboards are rated at around 5 million key presses. The keyboard itself is a grainy matte finish with shiny accents around the sides of the keyboard that are a huge fingerprint magnet. A CM Storm logo sits beneath the num, caps and scr lock indicators. The key caps are laser-etched to show the lighting from within the keys, and have a very pleasing smooth rubber coating to them. CM boasts "tactile" feel but this is nothing like a mechanical keyboard. There is a "bump" before the key bottoms out, but it feels more resistant to your presses, but being a membrane requires you to bottom out. Some have compared the feel almost to a Cherry MX Brown but I would disagree. As far as membranes go, this is one of the best feeling out there. The blue lighting is even across all keys, and the back plate is white to help disperse the lighting. The num, caps and scr lock indicators also match the back lighting, and oddly CM requires the scr lock button to be pushed to have the LED's light up. There are no lighting modes nor brightness settings, which is a shame. With the lighting off, the keys are difficult to see in dark lighting so it is usually necessary to keep the back light on all the time. The keyboard has media keys across the top in the form of stop, play/pause, rewind and fast forward on the left and volume up and volume down on the right. The inclusion of the media keys is very welcome. Because of the thick bezel around the whole keyboard, it is difficult to use a wrist rest and the sloping area beneath the keyboard is not extensive enough to use as the wrist rest. Using typerracer.com, I averaged a best of about 79 WPM with a 1% error rate, but using a mechanical for as long as I have it took some getting used to because of it's membrane build. Using the Microsoft Ghosting tool, the keyboard could barely squeeze our 6KRO, but not for close keys. The lack of a Windows key lockout on the keyboard is a sore omission to a gaming keyboard. It all wraps up to a flimsy feeling rubber mouse cord going to a silver USB plug. The plug does not have any indications as to what it is, so finding the plug on the back of your PC may require following the cord. The bottom also has 4 well placed rubber feet, but the elevation tabs are not rubberized. This keyboard is also plug-and-play, no software even available. The Mouse:The mouse has a very similar build quality to the keyboard, being covered in the same pleasing smooth matte finish as the key caps. The side of the mouse has a rubber area towards the front of the mouse on the left and right for grip, and has forward/back buttons on the left, and the DPI selector right below the scroll wheel. Despite only being on the left, the mouse is uniform on both sides so a left hander should be able to use with no problem as long as that individual doesn't need the forward/back buttons. The mouse will have the same color LED's as the keyboard when you purchase, and illuminates the front of the mouse with sort of "headlights" under the left and right buttons, the left and right of the scroll wheel, the DPI selector and some "veins" right below that selector. Overall it is very tastefully done and isn't too "gamey" looking. Sadly you cannot turn off the lighting like the keyboard, and the mouse stayed lit up even when the PC was powered down. On the bottom are 4 very small mouse skates, but provided smooth tracking. CM does not indicate what type of sensor is used, nor the switch type for the buttons, but the presses were positive and had a nice sound. The 3 DPI settings are indicated by the lighting of the DPI selector. Off means 1000 DPI, dim lighting is 1600 DPI, and bright lighting is 2000 DPI. 1000 was a little too slow for me but strangely I could barely tell the difference between 1600 and 2000. There is obvious acceleration going on in the mouse. I usually kept it at 2000, but I experienced no tracking issues while playing some FPS's and RTS's. The scroll wheel itself is rather spongy when scrolling but the steps were noticeable. There is no optional weights to the mouse, and it was on the light side. The mouse has a similar rubber cord going to a silver USB, also not labeled.Overall, this is a solid combo, and is a decent product for basic gaming and PC use. The back lighting looks good the tactile key presses feel much better than a regular membrane keyboard. The mouse is decent for gaming and looks great with the lighting.Pros:Feels much better than most membrane keyboards; good looks and good back lighting; media keys; nice finish on mouse and key caps; 3 mouse DPI settings; awesome price; 3 available back light colors.Cons: Keyboard is hard to see with lights off; lighting is either on or off with keyboard; can't turn mouse lighting off, even when powered down; DPI settings are difficult to tell apart at the 2 highest settings.

In my opinion this is the best light up keyboard/ mouse combo on Amazon and the best for the money bar far I have ever owned. I spend 12 plus hours a day between work and gaming on the computer. I have absolutely beat the crap out of both the keyboard and mouse and they are both working strong. I purchased them nearly 9 months ago and wow, still working like new. All of the lights are working just like the day I took it out of thte box. The mouse has been dropped on the floor so many times I lost count after 20. The keys are raised up. I prefer this for gaming myself compared to the keyboards that have keys that are flush with the rest of the board. I also have huge hands and these keys are nice and wide. I purchased 5 keyboards and 6 different mice at the same time to find the perfect fit for me and all I needed was this combination. The keyboard is heavy, it's the most sturdy feeling and thick keyboard I have owned. The mouse is my absolute favorite ever. I have used expensive mice and cheap ones and nothing I have used in the past comes close to this. The mouse is super comfortable, a medium weight, not as light as some of the cheap ones. I would recommend this combination to anyone but if you have big hands like I do this is a must. Finding a combination that both work for me has been a pain. Problem solved. I highly recommend giving this a chance. The quality for the money make this one of the best deals of any kind I have ever found on Amazon. The last combo I had cost me over $100 and I returned it after a few days. This set up absolutely destroys the quality and price and if this ever does give out I will purchase it again. I got three of my friends to buy it and they are all happy as well.

One of the best tech purchases I've made. I have a typing speed of 111wpm and I've been using chiclet style keyboards on laptops and from iMacs for most of my life. However, I've always wondered about the appeal of a more tactile keyboard besides the satisfying sounds.

Keep in mind this keyboard is NOT mechanical, but rather rubber-dome. That said, the keys are very clicky and I love typing on it. At first, you notice the rubbery feel of the keys but as you keep typing, you get used to it. The media control keys at the top are stiff when you first get them. You need to break them in by using them in your everyday tasks. To this day, they're still kind of stiff for me because I don't use them often, but that doesn't concern me. I've been using this keyboard for a solid week or two and I'm already preferring it over chiclet style keys. In the beginning, I had trouble typing properly because chiclet style keyboards are more spaced out and have less travel (my preference) which caused me to have more typos than ever before.

I adapted to the keyboard within 2 days and now my typing speed can reach past 120wpm -- a number I've never reached before in my life. I'm curious to see how fast I can type with a mechanical keyboard with easier travel. Anywho, I bought the RED LED keyboard that came with the RED mouse. Best decision I've made. The red colors are not washed out. I've heard the reds described as the red color typical in alarm clocks, but I think it's a deeper, richer red. Which is good. You activate it by pressing the scroll lock key, which, unfortunately, is not OFFICIALLY supported for Mac but there's a workaround on their support forums if you search for it.

IT DOES NOT WORK FOR ChromeOS. Since it uses the scroll lock key, it is impossible to activate the backlighting because ChromeOS has no function to recognize the key input. However, the mouse automatically lights up when plugged in. That's great.

Speaking of the mouse, it has two buttons on the side, which are used for pressing back and forward in your browser, which is extremely useful. The button in the middle is mapped as a DPI function, which should work regardless of OS. It basically increases the speed or distance traveled which can really help with larger monitors or first person shooters.

Overall, I really, really love this keyboard. It's only $30 and I can't believe the value I'm getting out of it. The only downside that this keyboard has is that it CAN attract oil or fingerprints (not much, actually) on the mouse and keyboard, but you can wipe it down with a cloth if you need to.
On another note, when the backlighting is OFF, the keys are low-profile which is great for a minimal look on your desk.

I used this without the backlighting for a week with my Chromebook and didn't find any problems with the lack of the lighting. I switched to a PC with backlighting this week and I'm loving it but I find myself almost never looking down at the keyboard to enjoy it as much as I should. But that's me.
I know a lot of people actually NEED backlighting on their keyboards, but I found it to be purely for aesthetics in my own personal usage. Great for night time looks, though!

Better than I expected actually.
Being 22 i've been purchasing all kinds of keyboards in the past 4 years. This is one of the greater cost efficient ones i've seen in awhile.
It is NOT a mechanical keyboard but it has a surprisingly nice feeling to it, better than I expected.
The LED backlight is nice. Keyboard doesn't feel like junk.
I purchased this solely for the keyboard because I use my steelseries rival.

The mouse looks and feels nice, the LED is nice, lights up the front, mousewheel, and the palm area.
It is a bit light for me but for a starter mouse it will be great for you, the DPI switch works fine(also LED lit when clicked)
nice rubber grips on both front end sides.

Would I recommend this keyboard? -Yes, nice quality for your buck. (And comes with a mouse.)
I would have purchased this without a mouse aswell.

PROs
-Nice LED on both items.
-Cost efficient
-Great starter kit (mouse+keyboard)
-Doesn't feel cheap.
-Keys click nice(except spacebar check cons)
-Nice decent cord length.

CONs
-not mechanical{of course)
-backlight can only be on by using the scroll-lock key (can probably find a way to macro it to a new key if I do I will update)
-The spacebar key (like on many low budget keyboards) is a bit flimsy (can hear the spring everytime i click it) But I can probably fix that.
-Keys are only visible during the day without the LED on. If you try to use this keyboard in the dark without the LED it will be hard.
If you're a novice keyboard user learn the keys and you'll be fine.

Other than all the the spacebar is the only thing that really urks me.
Not sure if it's a problem with all because I haven't seen anyone complain about it.

Keyboard rating (for it's price) 8/10 Definitely

I will definitely recommend this, it's price efficient, great quality for $30 and you get a free mouse!

Sorry for the Low Quality Photo's, I will update better ones later, lost my phone so using an old one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reviewing after more than 4 YEARS of use
Reviewed in India on April 20, 2020
Color: BlueStyle: DevastatorVerified Purchase
EDIT: The keyboard finally stopped working (one column of keys, i.e the 2 W S X keys are not working anymore, as of 4th June 2020

I bought this product on 7th April 2016, and am writing this review on 20th April 2020. And after 4 YEARS of using this product, I can say that it's a great value for money, provides a decent experience, and has a splendid life.
The feel of both products is great. The keyboard is nowhere near mechanical, but it has a great feel as far as membrane keyboards go (I am typing on it right now). It is working perfectly fine with zero problems to this date, even after daily use for 4 years. It is easy to type on, has a single color complete backlight (NOT for individual keys), and will not satisfy your RGB needs. But the backlight is decent to look at what key you're pressing, and it also looks pretty good. Some common problems which you will also see in other reviews are:
1. It is hard to make out what key you're pressing when the backlight is off (because of the way the keys are engraved). I personally didn't have a problem with this because I never have to look at the keyboard while typing. And even if you do, you can always use the backlight.
2. You have to enable "Scroll Lock" to turn on the backlight, and this leads to major inconveniences while using some applications like Microsoft Excel. I only had a problem while using Excel with the backlight on, so I would recommend not buying this keyboard if you work too often with spreadsheets. But otherwise I haven't noticed any problems because of this (but then again, I have the backlight turned off most of the time). It's not an ideal solution, but it mostly works.

The mouse is also one of the best I have used, and has lasted for a very long time. It has a very satisfying click, DPI adjustment buttons, as well as two side buttons which can be used in games, as well as to go back or forward in browsers, etc.
1. A problem that I noticed with it is that the scroll wheel makes a squeaking noise every time it is used. This can mostly be solved with using lubricant like grease, but I never bothered to fix it. It is a bit annoying, but functionally doesn't make a difference.
2. Also functionally indifferent problem is that the LED on the scrolling wheel stopped working a while ago. I don't remember when exactly, but after around 3 years of use. It affects the looks of the device, nothing else. (for some reason I am unable the upload pictures in my review)

NOTE: The mouse has finally started to show problems (left click has to be pressed with force) and I am looking for a replacement, but this is after 4 complete years of regular use (several hours a day, most days of the week)

I have parallelly bought Logitech and Redgear mice AFTER purchasing this product for my other systems, and they both started showing defects much sooner (started giving problems in left click within just a few months of use).
It will be very hard to look for a similar (or better) product now.

I will skip going into too much detail, there are better reviews if you want to know that. But I can easily recommend this product to anyone looking for a gaming combo on a budget. One of the best out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Una compra buena

5.0 out of 5 stars Great keyboard for the price
Reviewed in Canada on March 29, 2016
Great keyboard for the price. I've used it thoroughly (gaming, and other casual use) for almost 4 months now, and everything is still perfect! The light is a good brightness, and the font of the lettering is also very nice to look at. The keys aren't mechanical, but have a quality feel, keys are a smooth matte finish. The only downside is that the keys are hard to see when the light is off.

As other have stated, an amazing keyboard and mouse combo for the price, and probably can't find one better.
Pros
- Keyboard is responsive, nice spacing between and a good selection (standard buttons and a music player controller - volumne and song skipping/pausing
- Backlight is good, not to bright (just make sure you use a blue colorscheme)
- Keyboard is a good size and confortable to use
- Mouse's dpi switch is good and easy to use/access for in game switching

cons
- Keyboard with backlight is hard to use, if its not bright around or you can't touch type as they appear solid black and cant see the lettering
- Unless unplugged the mouse has a constant blue glow, that can't be turned off but its not too bright
