If you want to connect a MacBook Retina to a Sieki 4K Monitor, you'll need this part. I had tried several ways of connecting (other adapters, software, you name it) and only managed to get a 15Hz refresh rate - which is pretty annoying in active use. Connecting this adapter gives you an immediate option of 4K @ 30Hz, and works perfectly right out of the box. Can't be happier.

Bought this to hook a 4K TV (SE39UY04) to my mac. Passive adapters won't give full 3840x2160x30Hz due to driver limitations, but this adapter will look like a display-port connection to the OS, and will reach full HDMI 1.4 speeds under OSX.

Some others have had to use SwitchResX to get 4k 30Hz with this -- wasn't necessary with my set, so seems to be TV dependent.

Since the mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI active adapter was out of stock and I needed to get my 4k monitor running on a Mac Mini 5.2, I decided to use the full-size adapter with a separate mini DisplayPort-to-DisplayPort adapter in series. This works as advertised and allows full HDMI 1.4 bandwidth (3840x2160@30Hz).

I was hoping that this would work with my small Mac Mini 2012 2.3ghz, 16gb ram, dual hd system running a Seiki 4K 50" at home. I was using SwitchResX to vary the refresh rate. The computer succeeds at 18hz, but no higher for me. It looks good and I'm happy with this. I'm sure that I would not be succeeding without me reading that this active adapter would do the job. This is a winner of a product. I'm hoping I get more than one of the other reviewers, whose adapter failed within a few months. I'll update my review if that happens.

Plugged in this adapter and like magic, the 55 inch display became a great 4K monitor for that laptop. This is great for reviewing MRI scans, CT scans, and X-rays with my patients. Highly recommended.

Okay, so I have a Late 2011 Macbook Pro running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2. I have the AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics card onboard. I'm using a Seiki 39 inch 4K TV as a monitor. I have tried to get 4K with a passive dongle and it just cant be done. I was going to trade this MBP in for a newer model to get the 4K. I figured that I would try this product just to see what would happen and BAM! 4K output. Since the monitor is HDMI 1 there is the typical mouse lag, but that comes from HDMI, not the dongle or the computer. Very usable for non gaming purposes. SO happy that I got the results I was looking for and only spent the cost of this dongle.
