If you've never watched the "Spy TV" of the 60s you are in for a treat. Two of the more serious endeavors in the television realm was the American based 'I Spy' series, starring the inimitable Bill Cosby and the show's co-creator Robert Culp, and the British based 'Danger Man' series (known as 'Secret Agent' in America) starring the enigmatic Patrick McGoohan. Spinoffs such as The Avengers, Get Smart, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., and The Saint were a bit more tongue-in-cheek entrees to say the least. Mission Impossible was a serious drama but not quite in the same vein as I Spy and Danger Man. These two shows were true contemporaries (although the temporal overlap was minor), and comparing I Spy to Danger Man helps ferret out the strengths of both shows. Each series is well worth viewing.

To set a context, Danger Man came out in 1960. It was pre-James Bond, pre-I Spy, and pre-most anything else in the genre. Danger Man, which began life as a ½ hour production and later morphed into a 1 hour show in 1964, launched the first of the solo, lone wolf-esk, righter-of-wrong characters with that all important ultra-cool substrate. 6'2" consummate actor Patrick McGoohan IS secret agent John Drake. Just as Peter Falk fully embodied 'Columbo' (a show that received both McGoohan and Culp as guest stars) it is impossible to imagine anyone other than McGoohan in the John Drake role. As with I Spy's Kelly Robinson & Alexander Scott, Danger Man's Drake traveled the world, engaging in high intrigue across other lands and within other cultures.

And it is the traveling element that let's us draw our first distinction between I Spy and Danger Man. I Spy was shot on location! With few exceptions, Danger Man was shot in the studio, with stock footage of other countries cleverly blended in.

The black and white filming adds to this cold war drama series. The main character is believable (even if sometimes it comes through that he acts like he's been trained on stage - was he?) and the supporting characters all have believable motivations. As the episodes progress, "Danger Man" deals with more and more complex situations, though they are not unbelievable. These episodes are much more interested in creating believable spy than they are in trying to create super-villains or super-heroes. The only part missing is an explanation as to why this troubleshooter is so motivated to do the right thing. Though I have read online that it is these episodes that eventually led the actor to create "The Prisoner", which deals with they mystery as to why "Danger Man" quit the spy business.

This first series was made for 30 minute TV slots. It is fascinating to see how much plot the writers & director managed to put in such short programs. Patrick McGoohan & the supporting cast are believable & entertaining. Danger Man (later Secret Agent in the US) exhibits uniform high quality through the entire series.

Danger Man was somewhat different in the sense we don't get to see too many TV shows that begin and end issue and be able to complete it all within a 30 minute interval. Danger Man tries to stuff everything in on one setting. Kinda nice to see a B/W with decent acting and not a lot of emphasis on looks.

I wasn't expecting much but WOW! This show has really held up. As a kid, I loved 60's era spy shows like The Avengers, The Saint, Man From Uncle, and The Wild Wild West. Watching them as an adult, they are excruciatingly slow, predictable or outright silly. I never saw this show in syndication, and seeing it now I am really surprised at its quality. The plots are fast paced and creative and intelligent.

The John Drake character is like an early version of MacGyver. He tries to think his way out of tough spots and resorts to violence or guns as a last resort. And he is also like the spy version of Philip Marlowe--morally upright, doggedly pursuing the truth, and not distracted by femme fatales. He always tries to do the right thing, even when it doesn't work out so well.

I knew Patrick McGoohan from The Prisoner series, but I don't believe that show really showcased how charismatic and versatile he was. He is really amazing. He could have been Bond, but he wouldn't forsake his standards for a paycheck.

This predecessor of SECRET AGENT was about what I expected as for film quality and story, the first in the series. Nobody's fault, it's just old. I don't want to pay $1.95 per episode and thought it was included in Prime.
