Bundled software makes this the best SSD
These are the best solid-state drive on the market at the moment. I have bought these for all kinds of systems; Dell desktops at work, my Macbook Pro and my parents desktop that I put together. Combined with the included software, it is extremely easy to clone your original drive to the Samsung drive.

since all of the other reviews read as if they were advertisements, and this is a relatively new item, I decided to write a review for you guys.

Just a heads up, I didn't know this when buying, but yeah, i ordered the single unit which only includes the drive. luckily for me, i had an extra sata cable laying around so no biggie.

Installed windows 7 ultimate fresh on this drive and was fairly impressed at the bootup time, but also satisfied at the overall performance of applications and programs being executed right after starting the computer.

I was worried about the lifespan of SSD's as this is the first one i've ever bought. I looked up a couple benchmarks and found this relatively comprehensive test which concluded that the drive could last around 23 years: [...] . Which is a massive improvement from the western digital hard drive that lasted me 4 years. They mentioned that although the results are synthetic, the results probably don't range far from real world examples. As other reviews stated, this hard drive was a breeze to install, as are every other standard hard drive.

One important thing to mention is that the single unit does not come with the 2.5-3.5 inch adapter, so if you are planning on putting this inside a desktop, make sure you buy an adapter so it can fit in the hard drive bay.

This drive really does live up to its expectations and the numbers that it puts up. One important thing to mention is the devices/softwares RAPID mode. which is a really interesting technology that takes up to a gig of your system memory, and turns it into cache for the drive. After a little bit of research, i found a lot of articles that have mixed reviews on the technology: [...]
I personally keep RAPID mode off, as it seems only to improve the numbers synthetically and looks like it has no reflection in real world situations.

One thing that was cool was the magician software is really usable and simplistic. If you want to enable RAPID mode, then you can click a button, if not, then click it again. you can also use the magician software to update firmware for your SSD. It gives you the option to use TRIM commands easily and simply. One thing i didn't like about the software was that the OS optimization tab. I accidentally clicked maximum performance and didn't realize the difference, i later found out that my processor was constantly running at the maximum 125 watts. Which is weird because it should be able to step down when in idle. I checked my Windows plan settings and found out that Samsung had added its own power setting which put the minimum processor state at 100 percent, which should have been at 1 percent. other than that though, it's a good little piece of software.

There are already a lot of reviews out there on this drive, as this is the budget SSD that really can do it all. [...]
as you can tell, the drive is incredibly high up there, for a very decent price. This may very well be the best bang for your buck drive out on the market today.

one other thing i thought was cool: when you search in the start menu any application you're looking for, the result is INSTANT.

Anyways, tl;dr: This is an amazing drive.
i like: that it lives up to the numbers that samsung has given us, and its supposed life span
dislike: nothing, it's a standard drive that does its job.

I had a very sluggish ASUS laptop that was about 2.5yrs old. It had a 2nd gen Intel Core 2 Duo processor. It took forever to boot up and website browsing was very slow. I mainly use my laptop for checking e-mail, web surfing and downloading photos from my digital camera. I'm not a power user so I just couldn't rationalize spending hundreds of dollars to replace it. Plus, I'm not a fan of Windows 8 which is installed on nearly all new laptops which dissuaded me from buying a new laptop (I have Windows 7 now).

Lately I've been hearing how replacing the old mechanical hard drive with an SSD would increase performance of any PC. I wasn't sure how much of an improvement it'd be since I wouldn't be updating the processor. After I put in the SSD it was a whole new world. The laptop booted up in seconds instead of minutes. Applications opened faster and everything was more responsive. Until now I never realized how much the mechanical hard drive bottlenecked the laptop's performance (as opposed to the processor). I don't think adding more RAM can increase performance this much.

I want to let you know that replacing the hard drive was super easy. I was overwhelmed at first because I couldn't find any easy installation instructions on the web. I was afraid that if I did it wrong I would lose all my data (especially my photos) or brick my laptop because I don't have the Windows Operating System installation CD (p.s. you don't need it). I thought I'd share my installation experience for people who are novices like me.

The steps below are for upgrading the hard drive on a regular PC laptop (i.e. I'm not sure if my instructions will work for a MacBook). Most people will just be swapping out their hard drives and likely won't have an external hard drive to back up their data. That is perfectly fine. Also, you don't need the Windows OS installation CD because you won't be reinstalling any software. The steps below will copy EVERYTHING from your old hard drive onto your SSD including your Operating System, Applications, Programs, Photos, device drivers, etc.

Before starting you need to make sure you have the following items:

1) Make sure your new SSD has enough space to copy all your existing data. My original laptop HDD was 300GB, but I was only using 60GB. I bought a 120GB SSD and that was fine.
2) Small phillips head screwdriver (hopefully you already have one in your house)
3) 2.5" SATA III enclosure (purchased separately). I bought the following Sabrent USB 3.0 enclosure and it actually came with a phillips head screwdriver. Personally, I wasn't crazy about the Sabrent enclosure because it looked and felt cheap, but it did the job.
Sabrent USB 3.0 To 2.5-Inch Sata Aluminum Hard Drive Enclosure Case (for 9.5mm, 12.5mm 2.5-Inch SATA-I, SATA-II, SATA-III HDD and SSD) Black (EC-TB4P)
4) Hard drive cloning software (Samsung includes this with their SSD).

BASIC steps to upgrade/swap hard drives:

1) Install SSD into 2.5" SATA hard drive enclosure.
2) Plug enclosure into USB port of laptop (USB 3.0 will be a LOT faster than USB 2.0).
3) Install hard drive cloning software onto laptop (Samsung provides the software with SSD).
4) Follow instructions to clone old hard drive from laptop onto new SSD (Samsung software makes it very easy).
5) Shut down your laptop, unplug the power, remove battery and uninstall old hard drive.
6) Remove SSD from enclosure and install into laptop.
7) Reinstall battery, plug in power and restart laptop.
8) You're Done!

Restarting your laptop in step 7 will be super fast. That's when you know that the new SSD was worth the upgrade.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and very high speed even without installing additional given softwares
Reviewed in India on February 25, 2014
I bought this SSD after reading several reviews from internet. All hardware and firmware is manufactured by Samsung unlike other branded SSDs in which most of the parts are sourced from different vendors (in China and Taiwan) which reduces reliability. Other brands have higher failure rates and Samsung has lowest (almost NIL) and thus I selected to go with Samsung. This particular 840 EVO is faster and better than previous 840 series and also not as expensive as 840 Pro. I am using Windows XP SP2 and I had no problems in detecting the disk and using it. I am not using any additional softwares provided by Samsung like "Samsung Magician" software and RAPID software which further claims to improve the speed. The disk is fine without that. In fact I don't want to make my disk dependent on these softwares. I am having SATA 2 (not SATA 3) motherboard and the disk is fine and running with very high speed even with SATA 2 (3 Gb/s). So I doubt if SATA 3 (6 Gb/s) would provide any added advantage. The booting time of Windows XP was improved from previous 1 minute 30 seconds (with HDD) to 28 seconds (with SSD). So this is a huge improvement. Also all programs like MS-Office, Firefox etc. open under 1 second. Previous used to take 5-6 seconds to open. Random read/write speed are excellent as compared to HDD. Benchmarking tool shows 240 MB/S and 220 MB/S as Read/Write rates which is very good. I don't even have AHCI on my motherboard but still the disk is extremely fast. So purchase it even if your motherboard is 5-6 years old and just supporting SATA 2. It doesn't come with any SSD adapter for installing in desktop but it can be safely placed anywhere in cabinet with just one screw as it is very light. It doesn't get hot even after hours of usage. So overall a must have upgrade for old (or even new) computer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Faster and quieter than spinning disks
Reviewed in Canada on December 14, 2014
I replaced a traditional disk with this in an older desktop PC and the difference is immediately noticeable. I couldn't find any obvious place to screw this into and didn't bother with an adapter so it's just sitting in the old drive bay... shouldn't be a problem, I think. Also very nice not to hear the low hum from a spinning disk.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best upgrade you can perform on your PC/laptops
Reviewed in India on February 1, 2015
Hi all,

I bought a Lenovo laptop 3 months back and the first thing i did was to upgrade the HDD to samsung evo 120GB. its been 3 months since i'm using this setup. Here are a few things i noticed after the upgrade.

1) Boot up times : Any laptop running windows 8/8.1 typically takes around 50 seconds or more to boot up depending on the amount of start-up programs. Upgrading to SSD has significantly reduced the boot up time. Windows 8.1 boots up in under 12 seconds. I have downgraded the operating system to windows 7 and the boot up time in windows 7 is close to 15 seconds. I got a chance to test this SSD on a virtual machine which was running windows xp. Windows xp is quickest to boot off the SSD with the typical boot time around 5-8 seconds.

2) Software load times : Every programs feels snappier now. Adobe photoshop loads under 5 seconds which takes nearly a minute to load on a regular HDD. SSd's can offer significant advantage to gamers who are into multiplayer gaming since maps will load much faster and you maybe the first person on the map which would definitely give you a lead over you peers in a multiplayer setup.

3) Sleep mode, Hibernation : Another significant advantage is wake up times from sleep, hibernation. Typical wake up time is 1 second. can't get better than that.

To the folks out there who wants to revive their old machines, please do yourself a favor and install one of these and enjoy the world of SSD performance.

Last not the least i really want to thank amazon who has changed the way we shop. Fabulous service with value for money pricing.
