1. Packaging/shipping: Seemed fine, it was in one of those bubble wrap lined envelopes. Disks were further protected in sleeves within the cardboard box. Packaging is fairly minimal for once, for a two disk purchase this actually didn't have much else besides the cd key card and a quick install guide.
2. Install: I was replacing windows 7 on my wife's HP laptop... so it was full of all the "fun" HP junk addon software. My wife is also decidedly not a computer nerd (like I wish I were good at being) and has not kept things very well tuned or clean from a software/file management perspective. Thus I decided a clean sweep for windows 8 was the way to go. After our previous efforts to back up all important data I started in on the process expecting an evening of effort - instead it literally took minutes. I first popped in the 64bit disc, then restarted the computer and opened up BIOS then told it to boot from the disc drive. It did that and I was able to make a few basic choices (english, US, etc.) before it opened up the list of hard drive partitions. HP drives me nuts with this, they had 4! On a 500gb drive. Anyway, you can delete all the partitions in seconds and you are left with a nice clean drive with nothing on it ready to accept windows. I seem to recall previous "fresh" windows installs involved drive formatting but I assume that wasn't necessary since this was not a new drive. I proceeded to press install... and within minutes, maybe 10? Windows 8 was installed and it asked for wifi info. Plug that in and you're ready to use the computer. Oh you do need a windows account, or at least it asked me to put one in. Luckily my wife had an account already. It shows you as signed in in the top right corner of the home screen.
3. Operating system user experience (after one night): So far so good here. Had to learn where to go for the home button (bottom left) and where to go for the settings etc. (top right). After that... you can flip between the old windows desktop view and the new windows 8 tile view with a press of the windows key or just clicking the appropriate tile/button. Super easy. I installed a number of programs using the normal desktop view - firefox, chrome, dropbox, etc. No issues with any of these. All work fine so far. Finally, I installed VLC media player to play DVDs, and that worked right from the get go. So I guess the windows lack of DVD playing software can't exactly be called a major stumbling block.
So that's about it, I'll update this if I have any weird or negative experiences, but so far all signs are that this will be easy to use and fun to play with both the tile view and the traditional desktop view. If you're looking to keep all your files/settings then you probably want to look at other peoples' reviews to see their experience. I took the files I wanted off earlier, and wiped it clean for a fresh install. For that it was perfect!
Having used Windows 8.1 for several months, I can say that it works like a dream. It's fast, extremely stable (moreso than any experience I've ever had with an Apple) easy to use, and still allows me to customize my file system. I have not had any compatibility issues like I had with Vista, and aside from the glaring omission of the media player (which I never used, anyway, in favor of third party software) has everything I want. I have actually learned to like the Start screen for some things, though I still prefer to use the traditional desktop. I keep the programs I use less often on the start screen for easy access and organization, while I keep my most used games, utilities, and productivity icons on my desktop. This helps me manage my clutter in a way that was never available to me before. I have to say that I'm loving this aspect.
Being able to download and run apps has also been a huge bonus. Instead of having to have my browser open to run youtube and my playlist there, I have an app to organize and play my playlists. It takes less of my system memory and processing to run the app without the browser. I have a pretty monster system, but old habits die hard. Saving on system resources is always a plus.
As a Mac user and a long time MS Windows user, I still have to look for things when I want to change a setting or something. There seem to be settings in the Control Panel for the Desktop mode and most of classic windows settings. There is also another pane of the Start Screen for settings that have to deal with the Tiles and the Start Screen. It seemed kind of odd, that I had to go into the desktop mode to set up my printer and that there is only current apps that then could access the printer in the Tile mode. Also I think what is odd, is that Internet Explorer in the Tile mode does not carry over all the settings that I have set for Internet Explorer in the desktop mode. I think this is kind of crazy. This is just one of the may interesting aspects of the new version of MS Windows.
MS Windows 8.1 is a vision of having one inter face for both traditional computers as well as new touch computing devices. I would only recommend this for people who are true MS Windows fan boys or someone who thinks they will really like the new Start Screen interface. Otherwise I think it might be kind of confusing for some people. I would say that it was a good try on Microsoft’s part but it seems a little too awkward unless it’s being used on a touchscreen.
If things were more organized and easier to find, I could give this a higher rating than three stars. MS Windows 7 seem to make was a good operating system and seemed to be more organized. I would say that this is better than MS Windows Vista. I think this is a good upgrade of you want the new Start Screen interface other wise you are not missing much with MS Windows 7.
My use of MS Windows 8.1 has been just on traditional desktop computer without a touchscreen interface (HP Pavilion Slimline s5-1120 Desktop PC).
