- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2024I attached a 2010-ish 32GB Patriot Memory SATA SSD to my 1999 HP Vectra VLi8 MT (Intel 440ZX chipset) which an on-board IDE (Ultra ATA/33) controller. I could not partition or format the drive with Windows 98SE. However, I was able to install SCO UnixWare 7.1.1 without any issue whatsoever! This is a must have accessory for any retro/vintage computer enthusiast.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2024I was using a different IDE > SATA converter at first, but DMA issues caused the system to become extremely unresponsive while doing disk I/O.
Per some suggestions on various forums, they mentioned it was most likely the adapter and to get this StarTech adapter instead. And you know what? This one worked perfectly! Super fast DMA disk access now on my Win98 retro gaming rig!
Yes, this adapter costs a bit more than the no-name ones, but it is worth it if you want something with better compatibility with retro systems.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2024Worked perfectly when I replaced a 2009 vintage 500gb IDE drive with a 1TB SATA drive in our Toshiba Rs-TX20 TIVO.
Build quality is good.
The IDE pins can be bent IF you do not remove the IDE cable evenly from the connector, however I have found this to be true for this style of connector since 1987!
I ran into a few compatibility issues when connecting the adapter to the computer I use for cloning hard drives.
The computer is based on an older ASUS P5KC motherboard which has built in SATA and JMicron chipset IDE ports.
BIOS refused to recognize any SATA hard drive I connected to the JMicron ports using this adapter.
BIOS DID recognize the drive when the IDE cable was plugged in an Adaptec ATA66 PCI adapter card.
Didn't matter if I used a 40 or 80 wire ribbon cable, the 80 has 40 signal lines and 40 grounds to support faster speeds.
So bottom line.. It works for my needs but may or may not work for you depending on what you are plugging it into.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2022This is hands down one of the finest IDE to SATA adapters I’ve ever used.
Primarily, it is being used in a late 90’s Dell Dimension desktop and is fully compatible. One of the most beneficial aspects is that the master/slave IDE identifier works flawlessly as my machine has the DVD and SSD on the same cable. Simply set the jumper on the board, and it works perfectly.
I can also confirm that it is fully MAC compatible. I have another StarTech board in a 2002 iMac G4 and had no issues.
Can also confirm this will function for legacy drive cloning. Have plugged in a 90’s HDD to it and in turn connected to the internal SATA port of my desktop running Windows 11. After a fresh boot, the modern cloning software recognized the old drive and ported the data quickly to the new one.

Chris PalmerReviewed in Canada on January 14, 20215.0 out of 5 stars Beware the pin header
This product is fantastic. Much better than the cheap options available on facebook. Upon receipt I was blown away by the weight of the product compared to the cheap one I was sending back. Typical Startech quality on full display here.
The Good:
- Works seamlessly in an original xbox to allow for the use of massive SATA drives (I used it to max out the 2TB limitation of the hardware)
- Made with good materials
- Includes a molex passthrough to chain the adapter between a source and another drive
- Includes jumpers to allow master/slave/cable select
- The power adapter attaches parallel to the board, freeing up space in otherwise craped situations
The Bad:
- Both sides of the board is left entirely exposed, inviting shorts. Would highly recommend taping off the back of the board, regardless of use
- The power cable uses the mini-molex plug used by legacy floppy drives, meaning you need to use the included cable to power the adapter. Not a deal breaker, but extra, unnecessary, wires always suck
The Ugly:
- As opposed to a standard plastic ATA socket, this adapter uses a pin header. Your IDE ribbon will fit fine, but it seems to attach muss less sturdy
This device is 300% of the price of competing cheap options, but it is largely worth it to have a one-and-done solution. If you're looking to upgrade your original xbox hard drive in 2021, you really can't go wrong with this.
