This movie though sad and in many ways vulgar portrays what is really happening to the people in Cuba. These are second and third generation post war and it portrays how low Castro has brought the very same people he promised to have benefited. The island is dilapidated and the people are suffering. I have grown tired of some photographers showing their pictures and trying to portray the island as a paradise now. Surely the natural beauty of the beaches is there, but whas was a vibrant, well kept thriving island is now nothing but a place frozen in time! I know, I am Cuban, first generation and left Cuba with my parents in 1960 at the age of 16-1/2. Every country changes, but this one has changed for the absolute worst! Just wondering how the director was able to pull this off, given the censorship. Kudos for showing the sad truth!

This interesting and involving film was jointly submitted to the 2013 Seattle International Film Festival by Cuba and the United Kingdom (English captions). Directed by Lucy Mulloy, this movie has been honored at a variety of film festivals throughout the world, and has won numerous awards.

We find ourselves in Havana with some young adults, a young man and his twin sister, plus a gorgeous young man who works in the same restaurant as the male twin. Our handsome fellow dreams of returning to Miami to live with his father. It is interesting to view the city streets, we can tell that this place has seen better days....

We see these actors:
* Javier Núñez Florián is Elio, who expects his twin sister to stay in Havana with their mother. Elio is desperately in love with Raul, so he wants to help him reach Miami. It is, after all, only 90 miles away and surely he can cobble together something that can float that far.
* Anailín de la Rúa de la Torre is Lila, the twin sister. She is teased because she has dark hair on her arms, but she is indomitable. She has been inseparable from Elio since birth, but she can see that he has become fixated on Raul. She accepts that he is gay, but sticks to him like glue, nonetheless.
* Dariel Arrechaga is Raul, beautiful from any angle, this muy guapo hombre seduces any and all people in his path. He is certain Lila will fall for his charms and is willing to let Elio sell everything he owns to buy the materials they need for their little floating disaster.

By the time Elio has accumulated all of his materials, both he and Raul are on the wrong side of the law, so now it is no longer just their desire to go to Miami, it is essential!

This film, based on a true story, is the sad reality of many Cubans and Cuban families. This suffering is perpetrated by a regime 90 miles from U.S. shores. Don't expect a happy ending because the script of all movies filmed in Cuba have to be approved by the regime and their censors would not allow this to happen.

UNA NOCHE. It is a movie about Cuba. I will not say that it is a political statement. The movie reflects the painful life style that 90% of the Cuban people live now days thanks to the Castro's government." Hope" is a word that doesn't exist in the Cubans life. The movie is sad. Desperation among the new generations of Cuban increases everyday.

The film UNA NOCHE, is Lucy Mulloy’s first film. It is about present day Cuba. Unfortunately, the happy and free Cuba that Ernest Hemingway loved so dearly died a violent death a good many years ago.

Two main actors, who portray Lila and Elio, defected to the Unites States while en route to receive their Tribeca Film Festival 2012 Best Actor in a Narrative Feature Film Award Winner – Dariel Arrechada and Javier Nuñez Florian as Raul and Elio. Interviewed on American TV, shortly after they defected in Miami, they cited the horrendous repression in Cuba, constant hunger, the absence of good medical care and the lack of opportunity for young people who want to express themselves artistically and in other ways. Dariel, the other main actor, caught by surprise by his friends' defection, had to return to the Cuban Paradise.

The protagonists in the film are Elio and Lila, who are twins and Raul who during the course of the film becomes Elio’s friend. Most of the action takes place in what appears to be the slums of Havana. I knew Havana’s slums well as I worked there as a volunteer many, many years ago teaching and helping the less advantaged. Some say that one of the greatest achievements of the Cuban Regime has been the unprecedented expansion of Havana’s slums, which are said to be nearly encompassing most of Havana. Credit where credit is due.

The film UNA NOCHE is a brilliant and robust indictment of the present Cuban regime. That is why the Dictatorship’s censors have prohibited it from being shown in Cuba. After an almost riot during the first two showings of the film in Havana the Regime felt threatened by its message.

Great story, a little sad. I know many Cubans who have made brave journeys to gain the freedom we have in this country. These kids were trying to do that. And the kids in film weren't experienced actors yet did a great job.

And when they were invited to NYC for the Tribeca film festival showing this film they didn't show up, defected!
