- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2025Size: 1.1 Pound (Pack of 1)Verified PurchaseI always look for the least ingredients in red pepper paste or soy bean paste. This has the minimal ingredients without any fluffs. It tastes great too.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2014Size: 1.1 Pound (Pack of 1)Verified Purchasethis is how I like my red pepper paste - enough spiciness but not too overwhelming, quite sweet tbh and there's a subtle depth/flavor. the added soybeans at the end gives it another dimension that is quite interesting.
what I like is that they clarified there is no fructose corn syrup and I guess it's the more health conscious people who try to avoid it as much as possible. whether it's for health reasons, or even weight, the substitution with rice malt syrup might make a difference.
most sugars (fructose corn syrup, table sugar, honey, maple syrup, agave nectar, even fruits) contain fructose which doesn't get metabolized in our body, so it doesn't get used for energy...? although the difference might be minute, intaking too much fructose can prohibit weight loss etc. (that said, we still need to be mindful about how much of this premium red chili paste we use. calories are still calories in the end. does not mean we can use as much as we want, as this product is still quite sweet. 1 tablespoon = 6g of sugar). so use this premium chili paste as a better alternative, but keep in mind as usual about portion control etc.
from what I know, rice malt syrup does not contain fructose, so it's a healthier alternative. which is why I like this product. also the first ingredient on the list is rice, followed by red pepper powder, rice malt syrup and then water. unless the ingredients were listed randomly, this shows i'm getting my money's worth of red pepper paste. if you look at other brands and their list of ingredients, it's usually high fructose corn syrup followed by red pepper powder then rice or wheat flour as the list of ingredients.
from a health perspective, any product with a form of sugar as the first ingredient is already a bad alarm.
so I'm ok with paying a bit more for a good product, versus one that has fillers and water/sugar.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2019Size: 1.1 Pound (Pack of 1)Verified PurchaseI found this product when looking for something else. It is a solid addition to any stir-fry, but it is VERY salty. I would love to know if there is a reduced sodium version. If you add just a little bit, you only get the flavor and not the heat. Add more, and you’ll get both. I added some to my boiling water before cooking rice (along with ginger), and it made some great rice! The paste itself, though, is very salty when adding or eating directly.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2024Size: 1.1 Pound (Pack of 1)Verified PurchaseI bought this hot and spicy paste for my sister who had been looking for this Korean hot pepper paste she uses for different Asian soups and dishes. Word came back that this was the real deal. A little goes a long way!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2018Size: 1.1 Pound (Pack of 1)Verified PurchaseIt's an acquired taste and we never ate it straight out of the container - as a dipping sauce, we always heated in a pan with a little sweetener (such as pineapple juice) to cut the mild bitterness and saltiness, and sometimes a little cream, and sometimes a little oil too. I like the simple ingredients in this brand. As a dressing or condiment it would be my go-to over Siracha sauce, which usually has the harsh white vinegar in it, and I can add lemon juice instead of vinegar if I want a softer, more complex sourness. Lemon juice gives it that added umami too.
Because it contains rice syrup it has a somewhat smooth sticky texture, which is okay, but I've had gochuchang that was not as sticky, more slightly grainy texture, which is okay too. Many, many culinary uses for it, from mild to hot.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2019Size: 1.1 Pound (Pack of 1)Verified PurchaseAs a Korean, gochujang is life! We live in a town where there is no Korean store and the closest large city (Sacramento) is a good 2.5 hours away. Typically we make the drive down for all of our Korean grocery needs but we decided to give mail ordered Gochujang a try.
To be honest, I was really impressed! All of my kids love this the best... trust me, we've eaten a ton of Gochujang. Unfortunately, the 1.1lb size hasn't really lasted long, and I think it's a little pricey, but it's a GREAT paste if you need something to make your Korean dishes amazing.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2020Size: 1.1 Pound (Pack of 1)Verified PurchaseThis is a little expensive for gochujang, but the taste and the lack of corn syrup make well worth the price. There are many uses but my favorite is adding a little to ground beef when I am making hamburgers. My daughters know something is up but the can't quite put their finger on it. Gochujang really adds a nice, subtle flavor or smooth heat without being unpleasant when using a lot.
This is one of my favorite spices/enhancers to experiment with.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2024Size: 1.1 Pound (Pack of 1)Verified PurchaseThis will do in a pinch - but there are much better options that taste WAY better.
