Great upgrade for a 2013 Acer C720 Chromebook.

I bought this for my Acer C720 Chromebook. I opened it and found out that the C720 uses a NGFF SSD. This is the only one I found on Amazon. The C720 is new enough that I cannot find any info on it, but I decide to take a chance on this drive.

This is what I did:
1. Build a recovery SD (USB flash drive works too): In the browser, go to chrome://imageburner and follow the instructions.
2. Open of the back panel Mine had a warranty sticker over one of the screw holes and if you damange it it will void the warranty. It can be removed very carefully with a sharp razor but honestly this is a $250 laptop I don't care that much.
3. Unscrew the tiny screw holding the factory factory 16GB Kingston SSD, replace it with this one, replace the screw
4. Close up case.
5. Reload ChomeOS with the instructions from here:

It worked flawlessly and now my C720 has 108GB space left.

I love this little SSD. When I opened it I was fascinated at the size of it. I honestly just learned about this form factor because of my new laptop. I used it in a Lenovo y510p. I wasn't satisfied with the 24 GB SSD that my laptop came with that was only used for cache. I figured I would get the largest (not literal; space) sized M.2 NGFF SSD that I could possibly find, and boot the OS from the drive. This was the only one I could find and it works wonderfully. I'm booting into Windows 7 in a few seconds.

Unfortunately a couple days after purchasing the SSD it did fail on me. However, I believe that it was just a fluke. I ordered another one and it works great. I will keep this review updated to state how the drive is working in the meanwhile.

Sorry to hear that some of you are having the same problem. So far after getting a new SSD (same one) from them I have had better luck so far. I've been using it for the past few weeks without any issues. It is a great SSD when it is working properly. And especially nice to have two hard drives in the machine that I'm using (Lenovo y510p). I would recommend returning your defective one, and giving it another try. It is so difficult to go back to mechanical hard drives after having an SSD.

Matt posted here that the problem has been solved with a newer firmware version. The one that mine has is version 1.3, and it has been running problem-free ever since it has arrived.

Unfortunately the SSD failed on me yesterday. It was the same exact problem that felled the first one. It simply goes undetected with the system. I'm going to contact the buyer to find more information about warranty status. I truly hope this can be fixed.

They sent me a replacement drive quickly and no questions asked. They stand behind their product and take care of their customers. I hope this one lasts much longer than the previous two. It's great to have it back again. I'll keep this post updated.

128GB SSD is Awesome Replacement as an OS Drive on Lenovo Y510P

June 19 Update: My MyDigitalSSD is still running strong after 7 months of use. In March or April I applied the latest firmware upgrade to the SSD, and was surprised to see start-up times further reduced. My system cold-boots quickly, and I am at my log-in screen in mere seconds. I love the performance of this drive! It is a shame that Lenovo doesn't include them as an option on their computers straight from the factory.

I've backed up the MyDigitalSSD on an external HDD a few times since I purchased it, and even restored the contents once after updating the firmware. Over that time I have not had any noticeable problems with the drive.

Original Review:
This is an awesome product! Once installed and configured correctly, my computer starts at BLAZING speed. Matt at MyDigitalSSD is also quick to provide whatever support he can.

My Intent/Expectation: I bought the 128GB version of this SSD to use as an OS/Boot drive for my new Lenovo Y510P laptop running Win 8.1 out of the box. I expected to clone the existing data from the HDD to the SSD, erase the HDD, then use it as a data disk (for pics, music, programs, etc.). After trial and error, I was able to successfully set up my Lenovo laptop with the configuration I wanted (MyDigital SC2 SSD as primary/OS Drive, 1TB HDD as data drive)

Worth mentioning: I experienced unexpected issues cloning my HDD on a new Lenovo Y510P(WIN 8.1). I hadn't tried cloning a drive since Windows-XP days, and between the Win 8.1 "security improvements" and the new UEFI boot standard, this task proved to be more complex than I was expecting! Reference to specific products below is what I had available and found worked in my particular situation.

To approach this task there are a few MUST HAVE items beyond the new MyDigitalSSD: 1) Cloning software like Acronis True Image 2014 2) External SATA to USB connector-e.g. Sabrent USB to SATA adapter 3) USB flash drive for creating bootable media. Also, I did this cloning operation on a new computer on which I had only installed MINIMAL files and programs.

Directions (Lenovo Y510P (Win 8.1), using Acronis):
1) Power down laptop. Open laptop case. Install new MyDigitalSSD in the NGFF M.2 slot.
2) Power-on Windows. Use Disk Management tool to format new MyDigitalSSD in "GPT format"
3) Download & install Acronis True Image. Use it to create a bootable USB flash-drive. Remove USB flash-drive. Turn off computer.
4) Start system BIOS. Change boot schema from "UEFI" to "Legacy." Ensure that booting from USB is enabled. If you don't find the option for booting from USB in the menu, restart the computer, enter BIOS again, and look for the setting--there are some options that only reappear after you've restarted the BIOS! Once booting to USB is enabled, turn off the system.
5) Remove HHD from laptop, and attach it to the external adapter. I used an older Sabrent USB 2.0 to IDE/SATA Adapter. DO NOT ATTACH HDD TO LAPTOP QUITE YET.
6) Attach bootable USB stick, and reboot the system. The Arconis OS/Rescue system should start.
7) Now attach the HHD via the USB to SATA Adapter
8) Run the Clone utility, choosing the HHD as the "source" drive and the new MyDigitalSSD as the "Target" drive.
9) After the clone procedure is complete, turn off computer and remove bootable USB flash drive as well as USB connecting the old HDD.
10) Restart the system. At this point, it should boot directly from the new MyDigitalSSD...and it should boot fairly quickly.
11) Once you confirm that the SSD is booting correctly, and WIN 8.1 is up and running, you can use Acronis to format the old HDD (The Win 8.1 Disk Management Tool wouldn't let me delete the UEFI/GPT partitions on the HDD) via the external connection. Then use Disk Management to reformat the drive (NFTS).
12) Turn off the computer. Re-install the HDD. Restart the system to make sure everything is running as intended (booting from SSD, HDD shows up).
13) Enter into BIOS and re-enable all of the UEFI settings (for security). Recheck the boot again. If all runs well, power down again.
14) Reassemble laptop

If I knew what the process entailed the first time, and had everything ready to go when my Lenovo Y510P and MyDigitalSSD arrived, this would have taken about 2-4 hours. "Figuring it out" probably added an additional 6-8 hours :-) However, the increased start up and I/O speeds make it totally worth the time spent!
