To like this vinyl, mono mix, you likely need to be a real historian: you understand how mixes were made in the mid-60s, and you imaginatively compensate for, or appreciate as quirky, the sonic biases that sound mixers had in this era, especially given that Hendrix' sound was largely unlike anything at the time. Note that this is the *real mono mix from 1967*--this is not a recent mono remix. Thus this was mixed for a dash radio in a 1967 Nash Rambler or Chevy Impala, or for a small single speaker phonograph that dad gave you for Christmas in 1959. (Not all mono mixes from the 60s seem so designed, but many do--Dylan's "Blonde on Blonde," e.g.--most Beatle mono is bright and punchy, meanwhile). But for the mono AYE, the highs are rolled off, the guitars are lower in the mix, and the vocals are front-and-center in several numbers (not all), most notably "Purple Haze," in which the vocals are so loud relative to the guitar that the shimmering nuances of the reverb tank are audible. Note that the drums, which are a real selling point of AYE, as the stereo mix fronts a gunpowder-bright snare, are muted and recessed in the mono mix, too. (This is less true of "The Wind Cries Mary"). The cymbals overall have largely lost their sibilance. That said, this is entertaining to listen to and will really give you the feeling of mid-60s mono. You can turn it up to compensate for the lost high end on the instrumental aspects of this, as it has a decent rear end, but the guitars, especially, have lost their familiar sharp edge. (Trivia: the mono "3rd Stone" seems a tad slower, in terms of mastering speed, than the original stereo mix.) For connoisseurs.
