A nice little lantern, except there's no voltage regulation.

A nice little lantern, except there's no voltage regulation.
This lantern seemed perfect to me--it was a nice size, it ran on AA batteries, it output a reasonable amount of light on both settings--high is just about bright enough to read a book without eye strain and low is bright enough to see your way around. It seemed like the ideal emergency lantern. Unfortunately, as I discovered while I was testing it, the lantern is not voltage regulated. I noticed it was dimmer than it had started out within an hour or so of turning it on. I didn't believe my own eyes, so I set up a test--I put fresh batteries in the lantern, put it in a box with a hole in the side, and took a picture of the lantern every 15 minutes. The photos show a steady drop in output. After 4:45 of use, it was only half as bright as when I started. I stopped the test after 7:30 because the camera tripod was in my way.Given that I own $10 flashlights that can maintain a steady output as battery voltage drops, this is completely unacceptable.

I was looking for a compact lantern that would run on AA batteries for both camping and home emergencies. I already owned a couple of UCO lumora lanterns (which I like), but was looking for a more proper lantern with better longevity. The UST 10-days is exactly that, relatively small, running on six AA batteries, powerful enough to illuminate a small room, our six person tent or a small camping area and with pleasantly scattered light. As an emergency lantern it is good enough for small properties and for short periods of blackouts.
The top cover can be easily removed and the lantern can be turned into a hanged dome light (using the hook at the bottom).
I did not find the battery compartment door difficult to operate, just align the arrows and twist. Build quality of the product is overall good.

Unlike the UCO Lumora, it is not very suitable as a backpacking lantern, being too heavy and bulky.

Doesn't work with new batteries after 2 years. Used to be nice while it lasted. Can get many alternatives at big box stores that would work just as well for cheaper (and perhaps longer).

Good, but not as long lasting as I expected.
This lantern is fairly bright, approximately as bright as 25W lightbulb.
However, the charge does not last as long as I expected. With 6 2400 mAh AA rechargeable batteries, it shines for 10-12 hours before dimming significantly.

I have NOT received an item for evaluation etc..

Impressive. Small (soda can size - I place it upright in a drawer). Gives a surprising amount of light for its size, and placing the batteries were easy (although I did it while lighting is on). Looks very well built. The reason for not buying the 30 day version was due to the 10 day version using AA batteries which are more available and can be cannibelized from remotes etc. Very highly recommended.

Update: just bought more.

This is my second lantern from UST. First one was smaller Pico lantern. Pico was bright enough for car camping but this 10 Days lantern is even brighter and longer use. Some people complained about small size but I wonder why it has to be big if it deliver brighter light than Big Size lantern. I have 2 Coleman white gas lanterns and 1 butane gas lantern but definitely UST is the winner. No matter what kind of lantern you use, you have to have fuel or energy source but you don't have to worry about catching fire, burn your finger, smelly fuel, breaking mantels, carrying 2 different light source for outside or inside of tent with this one. This lantern bring more light than what I need for cooking or other stuff in dark and take top portion off hang upside down for inside for reading books(Low setting). Until someone develop better LED bulb, this is The Best lamp I ever tried.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little lantern
Reviewed in Canada on July 9, 2014
Great little lantern. Took it camping last week and it was bright enough to help me BBQ in the dark and also light up my little 2-person tent.

+ powered by AA batteries; especially handy if you have rechargeable AAs kicking around
+ compact and tiny; about the size of a small jar of peanut butter
+ fairly bright
+ good battery life
+ durable
+ has hooks on both the top and bottom, allowing easy hooking inside of a tent

- the on/off button is easy to get pressed accidentally if the lantern is in a bag
