My desk is located about 15 feet away from my physical computer. As you can imagine, this makes for a few difficulties in connecting USB devices. This active extension cable worked perfectly with standalone, low power devices like my mouse or keyboard, but its potential was ultimately realized with the AmazonBasics 7 port Powered USB 2.0 hub. Everything I've plugged in has been recognized and worked flawlessly with the extra power from the hub, and this active cable sending it all over the long distance to my computer. Great price and works as it should.

Works well given reasonable expectations

I purchased two of the 25 ft. cables and I found that they work well with most devices.
However, my older webcam works with this cable just fine, my newer webcam (which has higher power requirements) does not.

The first thing we should note is from the item description: "Provides up to 250mA of power to the connected device. If your device requires more than 250mA of power, it will either need to have its own power supply or be plugged into a powered USB 2.0 hub that is connected to the cable". If your device uses more power than 250mA, this cable isn't going to work for you without some kind of power supply added to the end of the chain.

There's a couple of technical limitations and factors that need to be considered in regards to this item. This is a USB 2.0 cable; the 2.0 USB specification has a limit of 5 meters (a little over 16 ft.), this means that right from the start, this cable exceeds the length defined in the USB 2.0 standards. This cable does reliably transmit signal over 25 ft, despite the limitation of the standard.

The next thing we need to consider is that an active repeater is extending the signal, but you're still going to experience some degree of loss due to the length of the cable, because of factors like attenuation (reduction of signal strength over distance) and electromagnetic interference (EMI). This applies to other types of cable (Cat5, Cat6, Coaxial). You can eliminate EMI to some extent by attaching a ferrite bead to each end of the cable. The use of ferrite beads can significantly increase the reliability of things like web cameras and security cameras, as EMI interference on such a long cable is going to be one of the primary factors that interferes with quality. Electromagnetic interference comes from a wide variety of sources, but one of the most common sources is from running your USB cable alongside electrical wiring. When you run your USB cable, try to keep a minimum distance of 1 ft. (12 inches) from power wires, where possible, and never run any low-voltage wiring (USB, Cat, Coax) through the same holes as electrical power wires. (Side note: technically, this cable is not rated for behind-the-wall or in-ceiling wiring. In the United States, this cable should not be used in this way, as it is considered to be an NEC code violation).

Finally, after taking in to consideration the power limitations of the cable, and the power requirements of your device, we also need to determine if this is the best solution for your needs. For a security camera, you'll likely end up needing additional items to make it work properly, whereas, for a printer, this cable should be adequate, as long as you give due consideration to the above caveats.

I would suggest that in the alternative, especially for things like security cameras, you consider USB converters instead of a USB extender. Even a powered USB extension cable is going to suffer from the limitations of the USB standard. The newest USB standard (3.0) supports even shorter lengths than 2.0; as more products adopt the 3.0 standard, items such as this cable are going to be inadequate for the average individual's needs.

USB converters take the USB signal and transmit it over a different medium of your choosing, say, Cat 5/6, wireless, or fiber optic. Cat 6 has a distance limitation of around 100 meters (328 ft), subject to the same attenuation/interference factors outlined above. Fiber optic, depending on the type of cable can travel ~2km/1000km depending on the cable type and the equipment used, but fiber optic is more difficult to run, more costly to terminate, and the converters are expensive, making this impractical for most individuals. WiFi is generally the simplest method in conjunction with a converter, but it's important to remember that this method carries a greater security concern, if your wireless network is compromised, they would gain access to the devices being transmitted over WiFi. WiFi distance tends to vary between 150ft/300ft depending on the standard used, location of the router/access point, and limitations caused by obstructions.

Received a different cable than the image. I ordered a 50ft extension and it comes as another type of extension. I have a security DVR setup in another room which I use this cable to extend my mouse, it only works half of the time since I have to unplug and reinsert the USB extension cable in order to make it work properly. Sometimes it will loose connection which I'll have to unplug and plug it back in again at DVR end which is annoying.

Needs an external power source

Needs an external power source. I had to put a powered USB hub before the cable and after the cable to get things working properly.

Apparently the repeater is at the end of the cable not at the beginning and too much power is lost over the 50 ft. The computer would not initialize it when connected directly to any of its 10 USB ports. Adding a powered hub got the computer to talk to the repeater, but it still didn't have enough power for a web cam. Added another powered hub at the end and all is working.

A simple power injector at the beginning of the cable could solve all these problems. I've yet to see any long USB extensions do anything like that.

Actually works at 50 ft !

50ft is a LONG way for a USB cable. But, this cable works just fine without any problems. There is a little USB repeater it the middle of the cable that make USB work at 50 feet.

We bought these cables in order to mount a USB camera on the large TV monitors in our conference rooms. We run the USB cable in the wall behind the TV, up into the ceiling, across the ceiling tiles about 35 feet, down the back wall and into the conference room PC.
Never a problem at all !

Reliable, with a powered-hub at the far end

Seems to work well for me as long as I use a powered-hub with it. I have placed a powered-hub on each end to ensure stability with the power and signals. So far I haven't seen any issues. Without the hub on the far end I do not get a reliable signal for a simple USB keyboard. I have seen this with other cables once you get past 30', so I expected this and I accepted this. One could argue that this should be noted and perhaps even built-in to these cables.

I have not tested data performance at this distance because I typically don't place a drive on a cable run of this length - I just use my ThinkPad USB Keyboard and phone devices.

I got this to replace another long powered USB cable of similar length, that had failed after being in use a long time. This one wouldn't run a webcam without a powered USB hub at both ends as well as the in-line electronics, where the other one only needed the hub at one end. Even then, the cam soon started going on and off and it was clearly struggling. I'd had no similar problems with my earlier cable.

I replaced this within a few days and had no more problems with power. I don't know what I'll use this one for, if at all. It's definitely not good enough for webcam use anyway.
