Ordered this because I needed a better way to attach hard drives to my Cylinder Mac Pro. I had a 4 bay drive dock but it was just too noisy and unstable, plus it was USB 3, and I only have 4 of those ports versus the 6 thunderbolt ports the Mac comes with.

Installation was cake. (Cable is sold separately) Simply plugged it in, powered it on, and put the drives in one at a time. Each one showed up with the right label and time machine picked up right where it left off despite being previously USB attached.

This JBOD is pleasantly quiet! I'm a very happy customer!

This storage array works great, but does have a downside.

Pros:
* Easy setup (just works)
* Relatively quiet for a 5 drive array
* Trayless makes drive swaps easy
* Thunderbolt connection seems to be much more reliable than USB3

Cons:
* Internally the unit goes Thunderbolt -> SATA Port Multiplier -> SATA ports, meaning all drives in aggregate only get 6Gbps instead of the 10Gbps of Thunderbolt.

Got this a few days ago, along with an eSATA port and an eSATA card for my 2009 Mac Pro. This lets me move to external storage for my current Mac Pro, and then transition to the new Mac Pro when I decide to get it.

So far this box is working great. It has let me clean up my disk setup, get rid of a bad disk that turned out to be causing problems, etc. Now I'm using it to hold two of my main working disks. When I get some new disks I'll build a RAID and move to that.

This box is ideal for my transition to the new Mac Pro. I need external storage that can connect to my existing Mac Pro (eSATA) and then to my new Mac Pro (Thunderbolt), that can work as a JBoD and then can transition to RAID. I have decided to use the new SoftRAID, rather than hardware RAID.

I'll update this when I have the RAID built and have some performance data.
