I know some people have a problem with the blatant emotional manipulation this movie provides, but I honestly don't care. I love the characters, love the acting, and I'm okay with having my heartstrings ripped out, restrung, and finally elevated.

Richard Dreyfuss plays the title character, a man whose dream is to write an important piece of music. He works on it in his spare time which becomes more and more sparse as his life collects more and more responsibilities. He becomes a secondary school music teacher ("temporarily") to help provide for his wife until he can make it big with his dream. When his family grows by one, he takes on additional work to gather more of what he needs to support his larger family. The more he loses sight of his dream becoming a reality, the more like a failure he feels.

The supporting cast is amazing with Glenne Headly playing the supportive and often frustrated spouse, Olympia Dukakis as the principal always fighting to keep the music program going, and Jay Thomas as a remarkably sympathetic and likable sports coach.

Give in to the emotional manipulation. This movie is wonderfully inspiring if you just let yourself get lost in it. Take the chance.

My grandson is eight and would probably never see this had I not acquired it for him. It is very long and he was never board. He plays the Piano. He stays over every other week -- one week he picks the film the other we pick the film - that way he gets to see some of the great ones. W love having him over.

I paid for it on Amazon as it was in HD and the transfer was extremely high quality with 5.1 sound

Netflix only had it as a DVD - I felt it was best to show the film in its best quality

I have to come back and watch this film from time to time and see Richard Dreyfuss as he faces what so many teachers face on becoming a teacher, hesitation, fear of the "system" and a bit of anger over the time one must give to the students(yes even the personal time after school when a teacher wants to do things with family or "indulge" in personal private projects. This eventually leads to a realization that being a teacher is a very rewarding and personal acheivement as ones students move on in life and begin their journey.

Great movie for the family. It has a great theme about a music teacher at a high school who really wants to compose a symphony. After being let go after 30 years he believes he is failure. This is of course until the great ending of the movie is revealed. If you like Gershwin, this includes some of his renditions.

I totally enjoyed this move from beginning to end. I had never really seen the whole thing - I would always catch it on TV in the middle. This is a great movie for anyone, especially if you played an instrument in school!!!

Love this movie. It's one of those you don't want to leave when it's over.
Mr Holland, a composer, has big dreams of composing a major (opus) and conducting a full orchestra performing his composition. But real life happens so he takes a job as a music teacher with all the ups and downs of teaching.
The supporting cast was fantastic. I really like the coach played by a very likeable Jay Thomas, and the principal was practically a perfect performance by Olympia Dukakis. Everyone remembers a principal they love/hated. Ms. Dukakis must have because she was dead on with her portrayal. Richard Dreyfuss is a favorite of mine, so any opinion would be biased, but he was perfect for this part. I wish I'd had him as a music teacher. The other actors really added to the believability of this movie and I found myself going down memory lane several times to my own high school years as I watched. Just a family friendly, warm fuzzies kind of movie.
