Pulled the Long Con on Me

After reading Robert Kroese's Starship Grifters, I came to one conclusion: everyone in the 31st century is an idiot. Rex Nihilo is either the smartest man alive, or a Forrest Gump of a con artist, lucky enough to stay alive in the face of ridiculously deadly circumstances. I'm still not sure -- I'll get back to you on that.
In fact, the only one in Rex's world that seems to have any brains is his robot, Sasha, who is programmed to turn herself off whenever she actually has an original thought. In a world like that, Rex seems to surround himself with the power players of the galaxy who all turn out to be bumbling morons.
I don't often laugh at the books I read, but I found myself chuckling, chortling, at times flat-out guffawing -- at times uncontrollably -- at Kroese's humor placed in the best places in the story.
At the end of the story, we do get answers to questions I wasn't sure we were asking, but it certainly paved the way for more Rex Nihilo books, which I will gladly shell out money for whenever Mr. Kroese decides to write them.

I went into this novel cold. I'd never read any Kroese before and I'm not generally a sci-fi fan. Based on previous experience with most sci-fi, I was skeptical. Until I finished the first page; I've been a Kroese convert ever since.

I had to ration this book, a couple chapters a day. With all the data crashing into our heads every day, the temptation is to blaze through everything we read, skimming for highlights. If you do that with this novel, you will be doing yourself a huge disservice. It really deserves to be read slowly and savored, and besides, most of us can't sustain laughter that long without serious injury.

Robert Kroese deftly avoids a trap many sci-fi writers tumble into. He doesn't waste one word trying to show how smart he is with the research he's done into the theoretical science that makes his story possible - because there isn't any. So much of the sci-fi genre reads like science textbooks that the stories become slaves to the technology or worse, simply vanish under an avalanche of techno-jargon. Not so with Kroese. He's got ray guns, space travel, non-human intelligent life forms, and all the other trappings of the genre, but this story could exist in practically any genre and remain largely intact. THAT is the hallmark of quality writing, in my humble opinion.

Because his work is free from the self-imposed weight of validating science. Kroese propels the story along with sharp, witty dialogue that left me howling with laughter. It all isn't one-liner pull-my-finger humor, either; it's long-form humor punctuated non-stop with one-liners that moves as fast as the story does.

This book definitely gets a "buy" recommendation from me, and I'm looking forward to more from this author.

It's insane, absurd, out of control, and absolutely hilarious.

Prior to reading 'Starship Grifters, I had read Kroese's Mercury series, the 'City of Sand' stand-alone novel, and 'Disenchanted,' the first book of his DIS trilogy. Those books convinced me that Rob Kroese needed to be added to my must-buy list, so the next thing to check out was 'Starship Grifters.' I knew going in it was going to be yet another genre getting the send-up (this time the space opera). Well, having read it twice now and bought 15 copies for friends, I can honestly say that 'Starship Grifters' did nothing to disabuse me of that "must-buy" notion. I am looking forward to the sequel, which Kroese is currently working on.

Whereas the DIS books were send-ups of epic fantasy but still had some serious moments in them, 'Starship Grifters' is one big send-up. Like the original 'Airplane' -- but on steroids. There is a plot, but it would be impossible to discuss it without getting bogged down in minutiae. Much like the Hitchhiker series by Douglas Adams, so many things seem to happen arbitrarily (and hilariously), but they do eventually make some sort of sense. The books in Kroese's Mercury series often felt like they were veering "this close" to going over the edge and losing control, but 'Starship Grifters' says "whatever" and jumps head-first over the edge. Without a parachute. The best thing to do is let go of preconceptions and go with it.

I won't say the book is a laugh-a-minute riot, but maybe every every two minutes. I laughed out loud a lot. Cackled, even. Feedback from friends for whom I bought the book was similar. One friend said he almost wet himself from laughing so hard. There are in-joked galore for the various SF fandoms (Star Wars, Star Trek, Dr Who, etc.) but even if you're not familiar with all of those, you'll enjoy the books. (I, for one, am not familiar with Dr Who, so when a friend pointed those out to me, I had a deeper understanding of them -- but they were still funny, even without that inside knowledge.)

So, with that, I'll just say, if you have read the Mercury books and enjoyed them, or if you like Douglas Adams, or if you like space opera and have a sense of humor about it and won't get your feelings hurt by a book that pokes gentle fun at some of the inherent absurdities in the genre, you are a good candidate for enjoying 'Starship Grifters.' It's insane, absurd, out of control, and absolutely hilarious.

An entertaining book that has its moments of laugh out loud funny. I, and you dear review reader, won't regret picking this book up if it sounds good to you. However, there are other books out there that do everything this one did, but better. See: Willful Child
