Outstanding! Best laptop on Amazon in the $979 to $1199 price range.
Black Screen Fix Here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zm3bcPV_9TIBest laptop on Amazon in the $979 to $1199 price range. Of course these prices change from time to time. I think the base model with a 1TB mechanical hard drive and 8GB of RAM used to go for $1,099 and the upgraded model with a 256GB SSD and 16GB of RAM went for $1,299 or more. I purchased the model with 1TB hard drive and 8GB RAM for $979. Great price, great machine.First off, I immediately replaced the hard drive with a 256GB Samsung 840 series, I had an extra one. This laptop (or any laptop at all) with a mechanical hard drive is SLOW. Having an SSD is a must. If you don't want to replace it yourself then I suggest buying the more expensive model that has an SSD and more RAM. Replacing it was easy. You need a TORX 5 screw driver, you can find them anywhere, I got one at my local menards. Just take out all the screws on the bottom, then the bottom piece just pops right off. You have access to everything with the bottom cover removed. Just a few more screws with a regular screw driver (a small one).I have nothing huge to add here, just about everything has been said in the other reviews. A few things to note.It is easy to see what the cause of the black screen issue is that a few others have reported. There is a small cable on the inside that goes from the screen to the motherboard. Where is attaches to the motherboard it could come loose and get disconnected. I just pushed down on the end of the connector and made sure it was firmly attached to the motherboard. I guarantee this is the fix for 99% of people reporting issues, it makes sense because they are saying that the screen is cutting out and going black when they move the screen back and forth to certain positions. If the connector came loose then moving the screen back too far would put just enough tension on the cable to cause it to pull away from where it connects to the motherboard thus causing the screen to shut off. The fix is so easy its ridiculous. Yes this should not happen but if it does happen to you just plug that little cable back in. My laptop did not have any problems, the cable was attached well but I made sure to push it in just to make sure, I had the bottom cover off anyway to replace the hard drive with an SSD so I took the opportunity to double check that the cable was firmly attached.Everything else - Keyboard is great, best on any laptop I've ever owned. Audio works perfect, headphone jack works perfect. The included subwoofer speaker is very loud and adds a lot especially if you are watching a movie or listening to music. The screen is the best feature, it is a work of art. I have never laid eyes on a screen so beautiful, the viewing angles are great, the colors don't shift or anything when looking at it from any angle. I love that this laptop includes an optical drive, I still like to watch DVD movies on a laptop.Battery life is average at best. I get about 4 to 5 hours just web surfing and such, much less when gaming (my kids play minecraft on it.)This thing is nearly dead silent. The mechanical hard drive made some noise, but once I switched to an SSD this thing makes no noise at all. If you put your ear right up to it you can hear a tiny bit of fan noise.Final advice - buy this laptop!

Hi Everyone. This is my first review on Amazon, although I have been an Amazon customer for some time now. I have purchased items directly from Amazon as well as other sellers on the site but this is the first time that I have undertaken such a large purchase (dollar wise) from the site. In order to provide an understanding of my experience with Amazon, I have split my review under three parts namely: My Background, Product Experience and Amazon Service Experience.

My Background:
I’m not a technology expert, and my understanding of gadgets and gizmos is primarily sourced from the internet (Technology is more of a hobby for me!). Unfortunately, most sellers on Amazon as well as Amazon itself does not deliver most electronic products to my country of residence. I assume this is mostly due to electronic product warranties not covering my location as well as distance from Amazon’s shipping facilities. Anyway, I was scheduled to travel to the US for a two week holiday in mid-September and decided to purchase my laptop from Amazon while I was there.

My previous faithful Dell Latitude laptop had to be prematurely retired after it succumbed to my 4 year old son! Prior to deciding, I spent a couple of months researching laptops on the internet and went through numerous sites and read tons of reviews including those on Amazon. I had decided to go with the Asus N550JV as it pretty much met all of my requirements.
I generally use my laptop for writing up documents, preparing presentations and keeping my media organized and synced with my Apple devices. However, Asus then released the N550JK which is essentially the N550JV but with an NVIDIA GTX850m graphics card. That pretty much sealed the deal for me even though the N550JK was slightly more expensive than its predecessor. Needless to say, I spent numerous late nights going through written and video reviews for the N550JK. I added the laptop to my wish list and planned to place my order to purchase the laptop from Amazon the day I arrived in the US! Unfortunately, due to the laptops popularity (which I strongly feel is well deserved), it went out of stock twice. Luckily, Amazon received a new batch in the second week of my stay and I lost no time in putting through my order.

Product Experience:
Most people (like me) would already have gone through numerous reviews so I won’t bore you with all the nitty gritty details of the N550JK. However, like I’ve mentioned already, this laptop is well deserving of all its accolades. The FHD touchscreen is absolutely beautiful and very responsive to touch commands. Personally, I’m more used to using the trackpad and don’t believe I will be using the touchscreen aggressively; however, the touchscreen is very handy for Windows 8.1. I’ve had no issues with the keyboard so far, with the backlighting best suited for use in completely dark rooms. The overall appearance of the laptop is pleasing as well, with the machine having an aluminum finish expect the bottom which looks like it’s made of some kind of plastic (albeit it’s very rigid plastic hence no complaints).

Audio, which is powered by Bang & Olufsen, is satisfactory with the supplied subwoofer making a difference to the overall sound quality. The laptop is not an audio powerhouse under any circumstances and it doesn’t claim to be one. It provides acceptable sound quality for a laptop and I would say it performs better in that area than other laptops. I purchased the stock edition which came with an i7 4700HQ processor, 8GB of RAM, an optical drive and a 1TB 5400RPM HDD. As is, the laptop is quite zippy and overall performance is pretty good (the quad core processor does it's job).

However, I replaced the HDD with a Samsung EVO 500GB SSD (also purchased from Amazon as part of my overall order) and all I can say is that it is a very worthwhile upgrade. Laptop performance with regards to startup time, program loading time and browser loading time have significantly improved, with machine noise being virtually non-existent. All I needed to replace the HDD with the SSD was a Torx T5 screwdriver, a Youtube video by a fellow DIYer and a lot of bated breath (I was opening up a brand new $1,100 machine after all! ). Please note that I bought the kit version of the SSD which came with the SATA to USB cable. Cloning the HDD with Samsung’s Data Migration software was easy and painless. Although not absolutely necessary, I would highly recommend upgrading the HDD to an SSD, which will make this great machine even better.

Amazon Service Experience:
I was staying at a hotel while in the US and I was a bit unsure whether Amazon would be able deliver the laptop to my hotel. Prior to placing my order, I enquired with Amazon’s customer service on this and they confirmed that they would be able to deliver to my hotel address. Their customer service was very prompt with their response and was quite helpful. I ordered the laptop using 2 day Prime shipping and the laptop arrived in perfect condition within the timeframe. Kudos Amazon and 5 Star rating for your overall service. I look forward to ordering from you again very soon.

I hope my above review will be of assistance to those who are considering purchasing this laptop. Also, I would like to thank the other reviewers who took time to write their reviews for this laptop as it was of great help to me. Thanks

After reading many, many reviews of this laptop and looking hours for alternatives, I finally decided to buy it. I do not regret it, however you should be aware of a few things:

- Really great offer, you wont find any better build quality and hardware for this price. You would have to pay at least 4-500 USD more.

- Build quality is fancy and great.

- Display is very good. It is not outstanding though, but a really good display. Some people complained about "blurry" not clear fonts. This is true, but it is not caused by the display but by the windows scaling feature. Just turn it off and you will have clear, precise fonts.

- As many people stated before me, you really should consider changing the hdd to an SSD. It makes a huge difference in speed, boot up time, etc. You could just order the model that costs 300 USD more and comes equiped with an SDD and 8 GB more RAM, but I really recommend you to buy the RAM and SSD seperatedly and change it yourself, as it is cheaper. It is really easy and done within 5-10 minutes. I still had an SSD from my previous laptop I am using now, but I bought the following things to upgrade the Laptop:
- http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004Y8SGXW (with this, you can get rid of the DVD Rom, but put the 1 TB HDD that comes with the laptop as a second harddisk)
- http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00111K6WE/ (as the laptop comes with TORX Screws)

- The touchscreen is really good. I didn't think I would use it at all, but as it is working extremely well, I use it here and then to scroll, zoom, etc.

- During normal daily work, the laptop is very quiet, the fan very rarely turns on and if it does, you wouldnt hear it unless you really focus on its noise.

- Trackpad: As you might have read in other reviews, it is just an average to poor trackpad and a bit flimsy. So if you plan to use it daily, you might reconsider buying this laptop. I personally would get frustrated if I had to work 8 hours a day using the touchpad, especially when you have to do left and right clicks, as the cursor often jumps around when doing so. But as I am using a mouse, the touchpad is good enough for me. It is doing OK for occasional use. Asus also offers SmartGestures like zoming, two finger scrolling, three finger gestures, etc.

- Keyboard: Now this is IMPORTANT to know: Some people reported missing keystrokes. And all of them were RIGHT! If you plan to type a lot on your laptop, this becomes quite annoying. I have tried many solutions and it took me a long time to find one: You have to completely get rid of the Asus preinstalled Windows but have to do a clean install with a none-Asus, original Microsoft Windows 8.1 installation disk Obviously, this does not come with the laptop. You either have to buy one, or find a friend to borrow you one. The good news: As your windows license is stored in your BIOS, Windows will automatically activate and you wont lose your license, even though you are installing "from the scratch". The installation wont even ask for your product key, it will find everything automatically in your Bios. However, it took me some time to find out how to reinstall as with the new GDP / UEFI technology, you have to consider a few details. In order to save yourself hours of investigative work, just read thread number 4 here: http://www.eightforums.com/installation-setup/44415-how-install-windows-8-1-8-1-oem-key.html and use Rufus to create a bootable USB, voila. By the way: You need to press escape when the laptop is booting up in order to get to the boot menu and boot from USB.
I havent installed any of the Asus drivers, which apparently cause the missing keystrokes. I will start installing a few and monitor until I find out which one is causing the missing keystrokes. I suspect the ATK package or the touchpad driver being responsible.

- Battery life: This is anything but impressive ;) You are getting a desktop replacement laptop. On battery saving settings, you might be able to make it to 3 hours. However, once you start copying files or doing anything else that requires just a bit of processing power, your battery most likely will barely last 2 hours. I haven't tried gaming yet, but I do not expect the battery to last more than an hour.

The bad things:
- Once a first saw the laptop I thought "Gosh, it is a bit bigger than I expected". (I owed a Dell XPS 15z before, which was much slimmer, but complete cr*p). But I started loving the laptop right away. Its size doesn't bother me, as I usually just transport it from my studio to my living room. If you are on the road a lot, you might consider getting a more portable laptop though.
- The HDD harddisk. As stated before, consider purchasing an SSD.
- The missing keystrokes, as it requires quite some work to solve this issue. And be aware: You need the Asus ATK Package for features like the keyboard backlight. So if this driver is responsible for the missing keystrokes, you will have to decide between not suffering from missing keystrokes and having / not having keyboard backlight.
- A minor detail: The laptop comes with a Asus FaceID Software, which unlocks your Windows really quickly scanning your face. However, this software cant be download from the Asus Website so you will lose it when doing a clean install. You can replace it with the free software KeyLemon though.

- Last but not least: Gaming: I am not a frequent Gamer but tried Skyrim and Call of Duty Ghosts and both ran smoothly in high to very high settings. A few reviews reported that the laptop gets very hot in the left corner right below the screen. This is true. I have read that in some occasions the screen started melting because of extreme heat. I cant tell you if this will happen, but it might.

Another tip: If you download the drivers directly from the intel website, you get newer drivers than the ones on the Asus Website. Intel Driver Update wont find a the Intel Management Engine and the Intel INF Drivers though, but if you just google them, you can download them from the Intel page and install them. It works great.

SUMMARY: If you look for a really fast, well build laptop for a decent price and if you are willing to put some work in doing a clean windows installation, this is the option you want to go for. There is no better laptop for this price on the market!

If you look for a long battery life, a portable, rather small laptop, you do not want to buy this one.

Regarding the missing keystrokes: If you do not feel you have sufficient computer skills to set up a clean windows, you should consider whether you can live with missing keystrokes. As it only happens like every 80-100 characters, you can live with it, it just bothers quite a bit. You might also try uninstall all the Asus software, maybe this can fix the issue, I did not try that.

I rate the laptop 5 stars as for my needs and budget, it has been the perfect option, even though it cost me many hours of works to get the missing keystrokes fixed.

I hope you guys can benefit from my review and my experience and can save yourself some time.

I have spent the last few months trying to find the right laptop. I wanted one that had a full HD IPS screen, a backlit keyboard with 10 key and a CD/DVD drive. This Asus has exceeded my expectations. The viewing angles of the screen are great and the colors are very accurate. I had also ordered an HP Envy 15t with all the goodies, but the screen was not IPS and the viewing angles were terrible and colors lacked warmth. Dell has always been my brand, but the 15.6" Inspiron 7000 series no longer has the 10 key keyboard. What were they thinking? The Asus has it all - great screen, backlit keyboard with 10 key and it is super fast, even without the SSD. The sound is also very good for a laptop. Another plus is that the laptop is appealing to the eye. Also, I have not had to use the backlit feature, since the keyboard characters are easy to read even in the dark just with the light from the screen. I am concerned about the black screen issue that some have experienced, but I will be able to reconnect it per the instructions that others have given. I will use this laptop more as a multimedia device, so I probably won't take advantage of the Nvidia. I highly recommend this laptop.
September 2017 update. Well, my screen has finally died. I have been doing all of the fixes recommended on you tube, but now it has finally died. I can access the computer via a monitor or TV, but I am so done with it that I am going to yank out the SSD I installed, reinstall the HDD and sell it on ebay for parts. No more Asus for me. Read the reviews for the entire line and you get display problems cropping up. I don't know how they get such good reviews by the geek sites. BEWARE

4.0 out of 5 stars Quality laptop for the price.

Almost the perfect computer, I've bought this laptop to use as a "gaming" laptop and I'm still using it today! This laptop is great for gaming as I can play Games like Battlefield 4 (60fps High settings), League of Legends (144 fps on ultra), Fallout 3 (64fps ultra) no problems.. The Laptop is not the most powerful laptop as it's not really meant to be. It looks professional and the design is gorgeous. Touchscreen is useless due to the size of the computer but the screen is 1080p which is great for movies and gaming. Sound quality is great but the mini subwoofer is absolutely trash. This laptop does get dirty often though (due to the colour and material), so you got to wipe it down a lot. The build quality is fantastic; love the metallic feel. This laptop offers plenty of power when plugged in, and it stays surprisingly cool under load. There is a couple things that really ticked me off though, one thing was the power4gear crap on the laptop; This allows you to "save battery life" in exchange for power.... UNINSTALL THIS JUNK as it will render your desktop slow and unresponsive. One other thing is the disk space, windows 8.1 is killing my disk space so upgrade it to windows 10 asap. Otherwise i'd recommend you get a ssd. My other real complaint is all the bloatware on it (Mcfee, asus junk)

After a year of use I really don`t like this laptop, I had a very nice Sony Vaio i7 that got old and wanted to buy the same but newer, unfortunately Sony is not making that model anymore.

This one I had to send it back for warranty because the screen had problems, now the space bar is not working properly and the mic never worked at all, over all very disappointed.
