Jonquil and Bryan Graham began with the idea of fostering a few New Zealand children; after all, they had an ideal home for them in a rambling old house in a kiwifruit orchard in Golden Bay. Shocked by the plight of thousands of abandoned children, she helped initiate I-CANZ (Inter-country Adoption New Zealand), challenging the government's anti-adoption stance. When harrowing scenes of abandoned Romanian babies rocking in cots appeared on TV, she flew to Romania and adopted malnourished identical twin girls who weighed 4 kgs at 10 months. Leaving her husband to run the orchard and care for eight children she returned to Romania to adopt a baby boy no-one wanted. But the ordeal turned into a prolonged nightmare as she battled the court system, determined to fight on and denying terrible accusations made against her. Returning to New Zealand, a Russian doctor she rescued told her about orphanages in his country. Later, she flew to Arghangelsk and adopted eight-year old orphaned twins.

This candid account - funny, heart-warming and always readable, shows us the tragedy of children without families and the difference that true parenting makes...to parents as well as to children. Love fairly jumps off the pages of this book, along with the ups and downs of family life.

Story would be fascinating with decent edit

I think this book deserves five stars for content and three (possibly two and a half) for structure. Jonquil Graham tells the tale of adopting and fostering a number of children (the actual number is not quite clear). Graham is a New Zealander and her first foster child is her brother's Australian daughter, who is followed by several New Zealand children (some adopted, some fostered) followed by three girls from Romania and a pair of Russians.
Unfortunately, she tends to ramble and leave portions of the tale unfinished ... e.g. a Romanian boy she was so determined to adopt she returned to Romania for a second time to get him ... only to give up and take a different child without telling the reader what actually happened. Her mentions of the foster children are also confusing...her niece Krissie walks out of the tale in her early teens and is not heard from again until a brief mention at the end of the book. Other fosters only appear at the end.
The book could use a serious edit that weaves in all the loose ends and leaves out extraneous bits and pieces but it deserves to be read.

I can't imagine adopting and/or fostering as many children as Jonquil Graham and her husband have. There are some people who are just meant to be foster/adoptive parents and some that are not. I believe they fall into that former category. Finding herself unable to have children of her own, Jonquil and her husband set out to adopt a child and end up not only adopting a number of children from foreign countries, but they also foster many more, including a niece. Their large Kiwi farm gives their children a great place to roam and learn responsibility. While I could not possibly fathom staying someplace like Romania for months at a time dealing with bureaucratic nonsense just to adopt one child, I must give this woman credit for her tenacity.

This is a memoir written by Jonquil Graham about her and her husband adopting and fostering many children. It tells of their many difficulties with Social Services in New Zealand in both adoption in NZ and in International adoptions. You'll laugh over the children and their many antics and cry with Jonquil over her problems in Romania.Jonquil's writing flow easily. The book was easy to read in less than a day.

This was a delightful book. It gives us all a look into the life of blended families. We are all alike beneath our outward appearance: we all want love, acceptance and good ways to fit into society & fulfill our lives. Gentle humor and many good lessons. She showed us that mothering comes from the heart and extends to all children. Everyone benefited from their time together.

Jonquil is an amazing woman with a big heart, she adopts children from everywhere and at the same time manages to help her husband run a kiwi fruit farm as well as bringing up the children, whose behavior in some instances would have made anyone else throw in the towel! This book draws you on from one family drama to another. A very lively book!

Such a sweet book. I enjoyed how genuine Jonquil (author) was, with not only expressing how she greatly she wanted these children but also of the immense difficulties that she and her husband had overcome in order to adopt, foster and raise all of the children as well as some of the apprehensions that she and her husband faced. Would strongly recommend to anyone who is considering adopting or fostering. Such amazing dedication! Such amazing parents!
