I recently made the decision to upgrade my 2010 vintage Mac Pro to USB 3 capability. I do a lot of photo editing and routinely work with archived files as large as 50-200MB in size, so rapid external disk access is important. USB 2 was not cutting it for me. After some research, I decided that the new CalDigit card was going to be a good option to try.

My move to USB 3 was a complete fiasco, chewing up huge amounts of time for little gain. I came to discover that there are a myriad of ways that the process may fail. Some of these could potentially be attributed to the card itself, but there may be other issues lurking in your Mac Pro which may make the process exceedingly painful.

The good: the card will recognize a variety of USB devices when plugged in directly to the card, as well as storage drives, an improvement from the previous iteration of the card. It's also a snap to install. If you're running Lion/Mountain Lion, there is a downloadable driver for the card. If you're using Mavericks, there's native support baked into the OS.

The bad: Finding a compatible USB 3 hub to work with the card is problematic. I tried a 10 port hub from a reliable mfgr with good reviews and it never worked properly. Drive recognition was spotty, at best, and often the drives would drop off and be undetectable after a reboot. Also, be very careful if you are running virtualization software such as VMware, Parallels or VirtualBox. The way in which the virtual machines are configured to mount and unmount USB devices may affect the ability of the card to recognize drives and can contribute to system instability.

I like it. The price could be better. Used it for my 2008 MacPro 8 core, and it worked after I fixed a few initial issues, that were caused be previously installed software.
Turns out this card does not need any drivers anymore with OSX10.10 Yosemite. I had drivers for my previous eSATA card installed, and after installing this card, my USB3 and my Ethernet did not work. I was able to fix this by removing an old .kext for USB.
Now I am happy with it and it works flawless.

This is my experience with a Mac Pro under Yosemite: The card works as advertised with two caveats:

a) USB3 disconnect can happen intermittently (with or without hub)
b) Awake from sleep usually results in my SATA drives disappearing

I can't recommend this card if any of the following applies:

a) you run Yosemite
b) you use sleep

I was initially led to believe the internal SATA ports are PC only; this is incorrect. The internal ports work fine with Mac Pros, you just have to find a way to plug it in. Mounting the drives in the optical drive bays works fine.

I have a Mid 2010 Mac Pro (5,1) running Yosemite 10.10.2 and wanted a USB 3.0 upgrade for connecting external drives, primarily a Drobo 5D. I first tried a Highpoint RocketU 1144C and the Drobo would randomly disconnect. In fact, it dropped connection about 5 times in 3 days. So I bought this card hoping for a different result and I wasn't disappointed! No drivers required either. So it's only been two days so far but I haven't had one random disconnect yet and speed tests to the drive look great. So I'm a happy camper!

I like this card. I'm using it in a 2010 MacPro 5,1. In general it's worked very well.

However, I don't use sleep, so I have avoided those problems.

Also, as some other users have reported, I do get occasional drive dismounts. I have not done enough troubleshooting to determine whether it was my dock that was the problem, or the card, but other reports here lead me to believe it is probably the card. It also seems to have more problems when more than two ports are being used. Caveat emptor.

Works perfectly in Hackintosh running Yosemite with no drivers or configuration. I moved the SSD half of my fusion system drive over to this new card and it went from 235.1/241.6 MB/s write/read on the SATA II motherboard port to 461.3/466.1 MB/s on the SATA III on the new card.

I am using it with a Supermicro X8DTi-F motherboard with an Intel 730 Series SSD configured as part of a Fusion drive on a Hackintosh running Yosemite.

One thing that did trip me up for a second is that the first time you boot with it if you go directly to the motherboard BIOS setup the BIOS is unaware of it. I had to reboot through the point where the card's BIOS runs and then reboot again and then the motherboard's BIOS knows about the SSD connected to the card so then you can select the SSD connected to it as a boot device.

Update: 2015/08/31. The problem I thought was only on the first boot is after every power cycle of the computer. The first boot after power cycle does not see the card at all, then ctrl-alt-del after no boot goes through boot a second time and this time sees the card and works fine. Still VERY fast but a pain to boot after power off.

Used it on a MacPro 2009 v. 4,1 and it performed and continues to perform great including being connected to an Anker USB 3.0 hub
