This mixer has a basic design fault as even using the height adjustment to its full extent it is not possible to get the whisk close enough to the bottom of the bowl. This defect does not exist on the next size down mixer. This one fact makes this mixer a poor buy, not recommended.

This mixer is horrible. I love KitchenAid, but this particular model is the worst. I've had it for 1 1/2 years and I hate that I spend so much money for such a crappy design. The beaters/whisks/etc do NOT reach the bottoms or sides. There is no way to beat egg whites and making cookies/cakes are a pain for all the hand mixing I have to do with this version. Wish I had bought a different model.

My girlfriend loves to make food from scratch, and after trying things like making pasta and bread from scratch, I wanted to get in on it. I value my free time, so I considered getting a stand mixer which could mix things in parallel with me preparing something else. I did some research and decided to get one of the KitchenAids. I got the onyx black model with the glass bowl and coated attachments. Note that the wire whisk is NOT coated.

I settled on this one over the Artisan model for a few reasons:

- The lift mechanism, which allows me to lower the bowl, add ingredients, then re-raise it without having to tilt the head back. This is helpful if you, like myself, put your mixer on the counter with cabinets directly above it.
- More powerful motor, which allows you to do more with the mixer. Not just make larger batches, but also that the motor is put under less stress when making smaller batches of things.
- Metal gear box. I've worked with gears and have played Airsoft in the past. In all these circumstances, metal gearboxes are preferable to nonmetal ones. Plastic/nylon gears work well, but they wear out faster in general. If they encounter a sudden increase in stress -- like when mixing a particularly lumpy piece of batter -- they can lose teeth and stop your mixer from working. The Artisan model has nonmetal gears, the Pro series (6+ quart) uses metal gears.
- Future-proofing. If you ask around, these are supposed to last for many years, usually 10 or more. I didn't want to be in the position where I loved my mixer, but would want a bigger one in a few years because it could do more. I didn't want or need any features on the 7-8 quart models, and the 6-quart model was on sale for $350, only $100 more than the artisan one's pricing at the time.

I would recommend not using these reasons as rationale for getting the mixer:

- 67 point mixing. Yes, the different planetary gearing mixes in a more complete circle compared to the Artisan model, but 59 points is already enough to get very thorough mixing.
- Glass bowl. The glass bowl is nice because you can see everything, but you can't put it in the dishwasher due to the band around the center. Also, it'd be hard to get a 6-quart bowl in the dishwasher. This is fine, because glass cleans up very nicely. If you're looking for something that can be thrown in the wash, you can buy a 6-quart bowl stainless bowl from KitchenAid.

Problems I've had:

- The beater attachment is very rigid. This is good when beating things, but it also means it's brittle and will crack under too much stress. I managed to crack the attachment when making a big batch of scones. It happens. Replacements are inexpensive if you do mess up -- http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00014W9K4
- Cleaning the wire whisk. This isn't a unique problem for this whisk, but the one that comes with this model is not coated, but made of aluminum that will corrode if put in the dishwasher. Washing by hand is doable, but I'd advise soaking for a while to make it easier. If you're like me and are lazy, KitchenAid sells a stainless steel whip for this model -- www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000PJ6XGQ. I might pick up one or two.

Small notes:

- There are reviews about a black substance that people have found in the things they've made. This is grease, and it is found on the part of the mixer where the attachments hook onto, and I believe inside the attachments. Give this part and the area around it a wipe-down with a damp cloth, and handwash the attachments before using the machine. This is a good idea regardless of whether there is grease there or not, as they've come from a factory, and then a warehouse.

Thus far I've made scones, biscuits, marshmallows, mashed potatoes (use the beater, then the whisk for fluffy potatoes), and cookies with it. I need to find the time to make bread. No complaints thus far about the mixer itself. I haven't tried any of the attachments yet.

For a relative newbie to making things from scratch, I'm a big fan. It feels and runs like a piece of industrial equipment, but looks gorgeous on the counter. I've used it about twice per week since I got it a month ago, and am very happy with it. These are supposed to last for a decade or longer, so I expect I'll be making things with it for some time to come.

Here's the deal...This is an awesome mixer & the price is great. The problem is that the whisk & mixing blades don't go near the bottom of the bowl. I am very disappointed that KitchenAid didn't catch this before sending thousands out to be sold. I mean really...it's called quality control. Someone had to test this design before it was approved. I think there should be a recall of the bowl. It is a HUGE issue.

I had to reorder the glass bowl,as the holder for the bracket was upside down on one side. You could not mount the bowl on the mixer because of it.

I find it interesting that they are not inspected before being packed and sent out.
