Good IDE to SATA adapters, but not perfect
Like several reviewers, I bought this HDE adapter 2 pack to help me upgrade an original Xbox to a large SATA drive, on the cheap. The good news is, the IDE to SATA adapters I purchased, worked flawless right out of the packaging! Also, I like they have a full size HDD power plug, as it fits the Xbox's HDD power connector perfectly. Which for me cuts down on wire clutter. The bad news is, both HDE adapters boards were quite dirty with flux residue and needed to be cleaned up with a toothbrush and alcohol.Plus on both adapters I received, one of the two solder points that help anchor/ground the SATA connector to the PCB board was empty of solder (see picture).Luckily I'm handy with a soldering iron. So I was able to touch up all the thru-hole connections on the HDE IDE to SATA adapter before installing into my original Xbox. Thus saving myself some money.TL;DR:If you're not comfortable with cleaning off flux residue and/or touching up solder joints to ensure you have a pair of inexpensive working adapters, then I would advise skipping over this item for the StarTech.com IDE to SATA adapter (Model: IDE2SAT2) instead.Hope this helps!

I bought a pack of these SATA to PATA adapters and they both came the next day fulling working! Very cheap and seem to be of decent quality. SATA connector moves a bit with a drive plugged in, but this shouldn't be any issue when installed. I tested these devices using a USB to IDE adapter and HD Tune Pro. Both adapters allowed a 500GB full-sized 3.5" desktop drive to mount right up in Windows and I was able to test. Went well!

I did a hard drive swap on my Xbox many years ago and when I pulled it out and hooked it up I kept getting an error on boot up. I traced it to the PATA to SATA adapter on my hard drive. It was an older one and very different style to this one. I swapped that one out for this one and my Xbox works perfectly now. I highly recommend this product. The form factor is great and I have had zero issues with it working.

The adapter worked (for me) to perform an original xbox HDD swap. There were a few things of note that seem to be common snags:

    1) You will need to set the jumper to slave on the HDD that you are trying to switch to. If you don't have a jumper, just find a way to short out those two posts (middle and "slave" post). This part really should go without saying. Also, pay attention to what is contacting the back of the adapter board as well as the hard drive circuit board. You don't want anything shorting out, so make sure you aren't making metal to metal contact on the back of the adapter board or on the underside of the HDD. If you're worried about it, use a non conductive spacer of some kind behind the board and under the hard drive if you're just got it floating around (cardboard, some papers, rubber, whatever). I used electrical tape on the back of the adapter just so it doesn't short out if it vibrates or shifts around.

    2) You NEED to make sure that the current xbox HDD is set to master mode (or master with slave connected) before disconnecting the dvd drive and connecting the new HDD/adapter. If you do not, your system can freeze or black screen upon connecting the second drive and you'll have to reboot. The default mode of the hard drive that is installed in the xbox may not necessarily allow you to connect the slave drive by default.

    3) Once you have completed the drive cloning process with whatever tool you are using, you may reboot to an error 13 or something like that. If that is the case, you could need an 80 wire IDE cable (this was my problem). It is still a 40 pin connection, but the wires are thinner than the 40 wire IDE cable.

    4) Once you're done cloning the drive, shut everything off and then switch the jumper back to master on the new HDD, hook it up, and enjoy more space!

    5) The adapter may be a little loose, so you might want to tape it to the HDD or affix it to the drive some other way.

Build quality is on par with expectations considering the price point, so I'm not going to knock it there. The two I got work fine, though the soldering is not the prettiest thing out there. If reliability becomes a problem you could try reworking cold solder joints or just get a new one considering the cost. Otherwise, pretty nifty product. I have no input on long term reliability yet.

Of the pair I bought one of them worked great. The other didn’t work at all and seemed to have a short somewhere because it got very hot during testing. The build quality is about what you’d expect. Clearly hand soldered in an assembly line with some parts clearly salvaged/recycled from elsewhere. I actually reflowed a few of the solder joints on the working one just to be safe, as they looked only half done. They were both still smeared with flux, which I also cleaned off.
Considering the price, I’m relatively satisfied. I won’t buy a 2 pack again, as I want to be able to return them easily when they’re DOA.

Worked exactly as advertised. I was able to replace an old PATA hard drive that had gone bad with a new SATA drive in my older server that has a motherboard with PATA and SATA controllers and ports. All the SATA ports were already used, so I either needed to get another SATA adapter card or use one of the unused PATA ports. Since this drive is used in a file server for storage, and is not in heavy or frequent use, speed was not a great issue, and the ability to connect a new SATA drive to the legacy PATA controller was very helpful. It works great with no problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars These were the best deal when I got them, if I ever need more I'd buy them again!

Got these in a two pack about a year ago. Finally got a chance to use one with an 80GB SATA hard drive connected to a PATA controller. Ran a full data test on the drive and got no errors. The PC I used this on does have an add-in SATA card but it would not work correctly with Spin-rite. So I tried the program with the drive connected via this adapter on a PATA connection and it worked properly.

Transfer was as quick as the PATA connection would go at ATA100. (I don't think the PC I tested it on supports ATA133)

These were the best deal when I got them, if I ever need more I'd buy them again.

These arrived pretty quickly and work perfectly. I actually used them in the original Xbox. One I used in a new hard drive install, and I used the other one to replace a different SATA to IDE adapter I used previously. The one I replaced worked, but the boot time was so long, about 30 seconds for some reason. After swapping it with one of these the boot time is just like a stock xbox, which is practically instant after the Xbox logo
