When the video card on my 2011 MBP started to die, I was pretty upset at Apple for doing nothing about it, and there are a TON of people suffering from it - so I decided to build a Hackintosh with some real power.

I've gotten this board working great as a Hackintosh (search tonymacx86 forums for "Mini Beast"). The only thing that doesn't work is WiFi, but I use GigE anyway, so that doesn't matter to me. I needed to install the Intel 2.4.14 Ethernet drivers to get stable network transfers (huge, multi-gig transfers) to my NAS. Also got iMessage working by deleting GenericUSBXHCI.kext and setting Intel ethernet to 'en0'.

6 SATA ports is amazing on a mini-ITX. At first, I wanted my four WD Reds in this Fractal Node 304 case along with my Hackintosh, so it could be an always-on machine, running Plex Media Server, et al. However, I decided that due to spacial constraints, and the fact that I shouldn't be leaving a 4770k on all day, I put my RAID5 array into a separate enclosure. I get transfer speeds of 90-110MB/s to that NAS, over hard wired connection.

I love the abundance of ports on this thing, and it's really well built. Like other reviewers, I also had spacing issues on the Z87N board - it wouldn't fit a Noctua U12S. This board fixed the spacing problems, and I can successfully fit the U12S with two fans on it. Next up, I need to overclock!

Good mobo, great features, easy CPU overclock

I'm currently using / have used just about every slot/connector on this board and everything is working great, the only draw back I noticed is a strange audio hum when my GPU (on PCI-e slot) is at a high load. Seems like the hd-audio processor and PCI-e slot might be sharing power... IDK. Not a huge deal since you can purchase an external USB headphone amp for 20-30 bucks. I am however being fair and knocking a star due to this since it will cost me extra to accomplish unconditional clean audio a mobo claiming "HD-Audio" should be providing by default.

Contrary to other reviews I read before purchasing this MB, I'm reasonably overclocked on the i5 4690k I have placed on this motherboard and have not run into any issues. Very easy overclocking provided by Gigabyte's EasyTune app (provided a VERY SAFE 15% overclock by one click), did some extra minor voltage/clock speed tweaking using the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility to maximize the overclock as best as I could.

I've also heard of people complaining about the USB 3.0 jack being too close the the PCI-e slot. I ASSURE YOU THIS IS NOT A FACTOR! I have an ultra thick 2 slot GPU with an massive back-plate and while the USB 3.0 comes very close to touching the GPU, they do not. The only reason I'm making a big deal about this is that this was a key reason I almost fully steered clear of this great value-priced motherboard.

Interestingly, the built in WIFI/Bluetooth 4.0 card that came pre-installed was extremely sufficient. I was worried about getting slow wireless connection at this price and was beginning to look at other wifi cards as an alternative, but I assure you this card is fast. Fastest download I have had yet has been @ ~6mb/sec. Not sure if capable of more or if it should'nt be getting this fast of a download speed, but its more than enough. Also, the dual LAN is nice feature for office/server environments.

I still think this is a great mobo for the price, would like to try out the MSI or EVGA 1150 mini-itx if I had to re-build just to see if the audio would turn out cleaner due since they are about the same price and offering just about the same features. However, I know this mobo is holding up very well and aside from the audio discrepancy, I would recommend it due to the value it does deliver.

Minor installation notes: make sure to clear BIOS via pins with a jumper before you begin your build (being a mini-itx mobo there is a chance your case is as small as mine, if not smaller, and it can be a hassle trying to get to the pins at a later time). Had to reset my BIOS due to the battery needing to be re-kickstarted upon first boot, didn't have any other issues after that. Also, ONLY USE THE DVI OUT WHEN SETTING UP BIOS, while I'm sure most seasoned builders know this: HDMI is not the default primary output and you will get a black placeholder screen after the start up screen, only the DVI will output the bios screen, think this can be changed after initial setup. If you are getting a black screen at boot it might be because you didnt reset BIOS or you might be plugged in via HDMI for setup

I purchased this to replace an ASUS h97i that had gone south on me. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to find a z97 board to replace it, as new boards are no longer being made. Fortunately, I found this used board and snatched it up. I've never bought a used motherboard, but desperation... I was VERY pleasantly surprised. This was a recertified board and If I didn't know it was used, I wouldn't have known it to look at it. All accessories were included and in sealed cello bags. Hell, the board even had that new electronics smell, which I like better than a new car smell.
This board is incredibly easy to set up, which is something I've noticed about Gigabyte boards. I've been an ASUS loyalist for quite a while, and they've served me well, but Gigabyte makes boards that are just as good. Always nice to find a manufacturer that takes quality seriously.

About the board: thus far, I've been able to overclock my 4790K to 4.8 GHz, which is 100 MHz higher than I ever got with the ASUS board. Admittedly the ASUS was an H97, so overclocking is possible but is not the focus of the board. Additionally, I was finally able to get my memory
to run at the advertised speed of 2400 MHz. The ASUS always crashed when I would employ the XMP so I never really bothered with it, I just ran it at 1600 MHz. I don't usually run my CPUs overclocked on a daily basis, I use it as another metric in judging the stability of a board. You may wonder why I chose an unlocked CPU and don't OC it. A lot of what I do is dependent on the single threaded performance of a CPU, and the 4790K was the absolute king of single threaded measurements. As a matter of fact, it wasn't until the release of the i3-7350K and the i7-7700K that the 4790k was surpassed in single threaded performance. Even so, the difference is only about 2%.

The wireless module is actually very good, which is always a pleasant surprise for an included module. Unfortunately, my situation requires that I use wireless most times, so this particular point is a very high priority for me.

So, to clear up my word salad:

About the board: Awesome. buy it if you can.
About the vendor (MITXPC): Just as awesome, use them if you can.
