Somewhere people act normal -- but not in the Downy Mount Mobile Home Park, where recently widowed Marfa Bacot lives with her mother-in-law Lulu, who cleans from hell to breakfast and has her make-up tattooed on so she's always ready for the rapture. As if it's not crazy enough inside the trailer, Marfa has to deal with the other eccentrics who populate the park, from the runaway polygs stockpiling water for the end of the world to the man who hears from extra-terrestials through V-8 cans to the domineering Don Ella, who runs the park with an iron fist and attendance-mandatory parties. Marfa dreams of a new life on her own outside Flagstaff, but first she'll have to let go of her old one.

Helen Childress wrote the movie "Reality Bites." She is a seventh-generation Texan.

Ordinary People Hang Tough

Old Girls in Low Cotton is a short, compelling read about two women trying to make a life for themselves in a situation that is less than ideal. They are crowded, short of money, and short of patience with each other but will not give up the idea that life can be and will be full if they can hang on long enough to get through every day, every week and every challenge.
The prose is excellent. The author has narrative skills that allow her to tell her story wihtout the glue of profane language.
For readers who know that life is pretty much about routines, household highs like a good meal and household disasters like a hot water heater leak, this book is an affirmation that "life will find a way." It is well worth reading.

wonderful ...what there was of it

Helen Childress is a wonderful writer and has great characters. It is about 2 old women who live in a trailer park and try to live together in peace, but anyone knows 2 women cannot live in the same house. It was just getting interesting, then the book ended. I wished she had expanded on it.

This product is listed as a Kindle ___SINGLE____!! Do people even bother to read descriptions (it says estimated length = 42 pages!! in TWO PLACES on the product page) or understand terms?? Kindle SINGLE means SHORT STORY. I am so sick to death of Amazon reviews all over the place where people berate short stories for being SHORT STORIES. If you don't like SHORT STORIES, don't buy a SHORT STORY. And if you do, don't criticize a SHORT STORY for not being a NOVEL. It's not Amazon's fault or the author's fault that you can't be bothered to read the description of an item. One assumes that since you're buying something written that you are literate. But it would seem not. Short stories are a valid form of writing, just because Indie publishing has everyone thinking every NOVEL should only cost two bucks doesn't mean everything that costs two bucks is a novel. READ. THE. PRODUCT. DESCRIPTION.

The oddest of odd couples

The widowed Marfa and her mother-in-law Lulu certainly made an odd couple, but in the mobile home park they lived in, they were relatively normal compared to the whackos around them. And despite their constant bickering and inane arguments, in the end the two women had a sort of grudging respect for each other. Set in 1994, "Old Girls in Low Cotton" depicts life in the Downy Mount Mobile Home Park in Louisiana. The story's high point was the Valentine's Day party put on for the residents by the park's managers, the tyrannical Don Ella Huff and her husband Smiley. Marfa and Lulu attended only because attendance was mandatory, but they ran afoul of Don Ella's strict rules for partygoers, and things went rapidly downhill from there.

It's a funny story filled with some memorably weird characters, and I enjoyed reading it very much.

I thought the preview of this book sounded alot better than it turned out to be.
But maybe a story about people in a trailer court only has a limited story.
I would not recommend this book unless there was nothing else you can find to read.
My librarian gave me some good advice years ago and that was, if you don;t like a book or it doesn't catch your interest, don't waste your time to finish reading it, there are so many other books that you will enjoy alot more.. I try to go by her rule, but I did think this one might get better "on the next page" but it never did.
