There is a fair amount of misinformation regarding the Western Digital (“WD”) MyBook Duo series with respect to encryption and potential data loss. I am sharing my experiences.

1) Software encryption: this is enabled by the user by adding password protection via the included WD software. It can be enabled or disabled by the user (assuming you have the correct password).

2) Hardware encryption: there is none. However, the RAID is implemented via hardware in the MyBook Duo enclosure. The implications of this design are as follows:
a. The proprietary nature of the hardware RAID implementation means that the individual disk drives CANNOT be read outside of the MyBook Duo enclosure. I believe this is not unique to the MyBook Duo as many other RAID enclosures have the same characteristics.
b. The RAID implementation is the same from enclosure to enclosure. Therefore, a drive created in one MyBook Duo enclosure CAN be installed into another MyBook Duo enclosure and READ SUCCESSFULLY. (As I have two MyBook Duo’s, I have physically tested this.)
c. If the MyBook Duo enclosure fails for any reason, a replacement enclosure will read the disks successfully. The data IS NOT LOST.

3) With respect to temperature, when running continuously for an hour or more (such as when performing a backup), the drives reach temperatures in excess of 55C. While I believe the drives can endure such temperatures, I believe that is hotter than desired. Therefore, I recommend that Western Digital updates its design of the MyBook Duo enclosure to include a small exhaust fan.

4) I have added small, 80 mm (3”) USB-powered variable-speed fans that sit directly on top of the MyBook Duo enclosures to help expel the excess heat from the drives. Even though the fans are small and virtually silent, they are probably overkill as it only takes a minimal amount of extra air movement (the fans are at the lowest setting) to keep the drives comfortably below 40C, even when running continuously.

5) Overall, I am happy with the MyBook Duo (8TB drives). While I do believe the lack of a fan is a non-optimal design decision, it is easy to add an exterior fan that works very effectively at maintaining more desirable drive temperatures.

I bought one of these to store media on, to be able to access from my router using the NAS feature and it works perfectly. It's fast and works great. My only complaint is cooling. I put a 120mm fan on top and strapped it down with zip ties, and wired it to a 12v power adapter I had from an old netgear router and it stays cold. The drives are about 125 each, so it's very affordable considering the cost to build your own.

1st 8TB My Book Duo DOA

First unit was DOA. I/O device error when attempting to copy over data. Tried everything to fix it...nothing worked.
3 stars for now, until I check out the replacement unit, which is in transit.

Update 3/26/16:
The replacement unit works perfectly. Burned in for 72 hours and counting without an issue. Copying data at 170Mbs, on average.
One thing I noticed that was interesting was the power brick that shipped with this unit was different from the first. The first unit had what appeared to be a power brick for a single WD My Book drive. Perhaps the first kit shipped with the wrong AC adapter?

2nd unit seems to be working great. So far, so good.

Mac Software needs to be updated. Documentation could be better.

If you're running OSX 10.11 or newer, you will not be able to update the firmware. Firmware updater as of Jan 2017, only works on OSX 10.10 or earlier. Considering is such a big company, I'm surprised that their software is 2 OS cycles out of date. My suggestion is to run the update on an older machine or on a windows machine.

If you plan to configure the the drive, download the WD utilities from WD's site. It works fine.

Documentation could be better. I'm technically inclined so it wasnt a big deal to me, more of an annoyance, but other users may be confused.

Overall drive is fast even on Raid 1. It was writing at 150+ mb/s, so as good as a fast usb flash drive.

I am opposed to any Cloud service, so I brought three 12TB My Books! Outrageous capacity for a very high spec custom desktop, for all my movies, full backup, music, pictures, and some CAD and home-work office. Yep: all-in-1-place where I can see it, right next to my desk.
It's not fully plug and play on my Windows 7 Pro: the Smartware is still a bit clunky (not always doing exactly what the manual says it will do). You just have to know how computers behave, read what its doing and be patient. I also have a 2TB My Book for Mac and SmartWare is still incompatible with OS-X 10 Yosemite. That had a more simple/basic UI. WD wants to be different from what Windows wants. The setup bypasses Windows and WD doesn't want Windows to update drivers and firmware: only from WD's own servers it seems. This creates a few workarounds you have to learn. Also the WD HD password lock app shows as a separate HD in Windows. As I say its a bit clunky, because evidently WD have not worked well with Microsoft , so they've gone their own way.
WD if you're reading this: you need to make the whole set-up and maintenance apps of your ExtHDs much more integrated and Windows friendly. Windows 10 is out in about 3 weeks: what then?
Oh, and don't think you can daisychain in series, more than 1 WD ExtHD into 1 USB3 socket: it doesn't work. WD at least came back with an authoritative answer: the next USB version might allow it, but not now. No problem, I've got about 6 USB3 sockets on my PC anyway.
But they are great drives and excellent value for money.
