4.2 out of 5 stars 404 ratings

USA Today bestselling author Sharon Cullen’s captivating novel tells the deeply emotional tale of two devoted lovers facing the ravages of war.

For months now, Lady Grace Ashworth has mourned the death of her beloved husband—until the day a very-much-alive Michael arrives at her front door. It’s nothing less than a miracle. However, Grace soon realizes that this Michael isn’t the same man who left for the Crimean War. She’s stunned to learn that he has suffered a devastating head injury. Putting all her own desires aside, Grace resolves to devote herself to Michael’s recovery and to love him no matter what troubles may come.

Convinced that his wife is wasting her time on a broken man, Michael attempts to shield Grace from a life of inconvenience by driving her away. But Grace will have none of that. Despite every obstacle Michael throws in her path, she stubbornly soldiers on, fighting not only for their marriage but for the love they once shared. HIS SAVING GRACE by Sharon Cullen is a well written novel about a reunited couple having to find themselves again as individuals and as a couple. The book begins with the grief stricken wife bullied by her brother-in-law. After dealing with him for a year, the sudden return of her husband feels too surreal to comprehend. The Earl of Blackbourne suffers the lasting effects of a severe brain injury and the book chronicles the forging of the couple's new relationship and the long road to acceptance and recovery.

I really liked that the author did not sugar coat the changes left by Michael's injuries or suddenly cure him half-way through the book the way some authors do. Both Grace and Michael change much from their early days of marriage. Grace develops a backbone and becomes a tigress protecting Michael. Michael learns to compensate for his injuries and be the husband who also protects and cherishes Grace.

The plot holds together fairly well. There are the standard historical romance conventions. Alfred and the staff care for the couple in proper British style. Tarik, the former Cossack soldier, is the devoted manservant. Nigel, Michael's brother and short term successor, makes a fine villain. The language and attitudes are standard historical romance but the couple's story could be transferred to any war time couple. I only had one or two quibbles. For a sudden clandestine return, the story never mentions why the military did not let anyone know that Michael was alive. He was an Earl, not just a soldier. He traveled across Europe seeing doctors with no money? Dr. Ridley seemed to be decades ahead of his colleagues in his knowledge of head injuries. In the mid 1800s, I find it hard to believe that doctors knew which areas of the brain controlled what parts of the body so specifically or knew of the modern general rule about length of recovery. If it could not be stitched up, sawed off or treated with laudanum or salves, you were usually out of luck. Despite, these minor complaints, I was drawn in from the first page. The story and writing were as good as the more expensive novels from the more famous names in the genre.

This is about a man coming home from war with a head wound. It delves into changes in personality and memory with brain damage. It also brings in the romance of a husband and wife dealing with these changes while learning to love each other in there new life. The epilogue was a bit disappointing. Was hoping for a bit more but still a nice read.

This is one of the best historical romances I've read in a long time. It completely sucked me in from the beginning and it was a really emotional read.

Grace is the kind of heroine that I love. She's strong, stubborn, loving and forgiving. Her life has been completely torn apart by the death of her husband. Her awful brother-in-law wants her to remarry (really he just wants to be rid of her) and she seems so lost.

What should be a happy homecoming when she finds out Michael didn't die in the war, turns into a life of uncertainty and wariness. Michael has a brain injury and there are complications from that. This book definitely seemed relevant to the present day with so many members of the armed services returning with injuries and/or PTSD.

Michael alternately made me feel great compassion for him and made me hate him for the way he was treating his wife. Grace was unwavering in her loyalty and love for Michael even when it was nearly breaking her heart. There was so much emotion between the two, I was transfixed.

I loved how things ended on a positive note, but all was not sunshine and rainbows, I appreciated the realism in that. What a fantastic read!

The emotional turbulence of having the husband declared dead return from the grave is absolutely heart rendering for Lady Grace Ashworth
Michael, The Earl of Blackbourne, was said to have been killed on a Crimean battlefield. Grace had never stopped mourning.
The Michael who has returned is very different to the one who left.
Michaels story is violent, his wounds barely visible but nonetheless deep and entrenched.
Only Grace's love stands between him and total despair, despite his best efforts to turn her away.
Tragic and tender and turbulent, this is a lovely story with the requisite amount of darstardly relations trying to overturn Michael's reclaiming of his title.

So, I’m slowly but surely making my way through Cullen’s Secrets & Seduction series. “His Saving Grace”, the fourth book of the series, was good – but not per the usual of what you would expect considering the first three books. In this story, the action we’ve come to expect is traded in exchange for psychological and emotional drama. It was a bit of a departure, and I would be lying if I didn’t say I missed the action. Personally for me, this book was a bit harder to read, as it was very emotional. Both main characters – Grace and Michael – experience much trauma. Grace believes her husband to have died during battle, only to find him reappear on her door step almost a year later. Michael returns injured and believing he is broken; he questions whether he should have come back at all. Michael loves his wife, but keeps pushing her away because he believes he’s damaged and beyond saving. Grace digs in and fights for Michael and their love, and it takes a toll on her as well. The romance is present in this story, but a little more tame than the usual. Overall, I liked this book, but in terms of the entire series, my least favorite to be honest. Still, a good read and I’d recommend for historical romance readers.

Loved this story but obviously should have read this book as the start of a series 6 (5 of which I had already read). Still loved the story and will most definitely read them again all in sequence. An amazingly talented author. Well worth reading all her stories. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars A compelling insight into learning to live again as husband and wife following devastating brain damage

I was in two minds whether to read this - I'd previously read The Reluctant Duchess about Lady Sarah Emerson (a secondary character in His Saving Grace), hadn't enjoyed it and couldn't recommend. But, I'm glad I persevered with this. Grace has to relearn how to live with her husband Michael, whom she thought had died in the Crimea War, but who unexpectedly returns a changed man after suffering severe head injuries. The story is mainly about learning to live again as husband and wife, coming to terms with that change and understanding that life must go on. On those terms the story works very well. I wasn't so keen on the plot device of the awful brother who unwillingly has to give up the earldom on Michael's unexpected return from war - that was all a bit predictable and the way Grace prevented his attempt to regain the title was frankly weak. However, it didn't detract from the story of the relationship. One very big beef though. What's with the front cover? This isn't a regency set story - it's Victorian and the dress is all wrong! Marks? I've given a 4 but really nearer 3.5.
