The WHO at 50

Compilation # 1000 or something like that of The WHO. Another repackaging of the WHO's Classics in time for the 50th Anniversary Tour. That being said. This is a Great Compilation. There are numerous positives and a few negatives.

First the Positives:
+ Outstanding Sound
+ This compilation spans the entire Career of the Who not just the MCA years
+ A few rare classic non album tracks included - Dogs, Relay, The Last Time
+ A New Who Song that is good
+ Extended version of Magic Bus

Now the Negatives:
+ Where is Long Live Rock? This should be included. (Cut one of the It's Hard Tracks)
+ Single Edits of Won't Get Fooled Again, Who are You and Real Good Looking Boy. (I get it, they are presenting the singles but come on!)
Bottom Line if you love the Who and have all of the albums you will have to have it and it is highly recommended.
If you are new to the WHO, Get the 2002 The WHO Ultimate Collection compilation. It is a better introduction by far. You will miss the Post 1982 stuff but At you will get all the classics and the full length versions of Wont Get Fooled Again and Who are You.

For all WHO Fans this one is Recommended!! Looking forward to the tour and seeing them in 2015!

Odds & Sods Part Two, sort of...

Any Who fan knows that the band recorded a lot of non-LP material - including some of the best and biggest hits (e.g. "Substitute) - and that makes purchasing something like "The Who Hits 50" necessary, even after all the deluxe editions, "Odds And Sods," and whatnot. As a hits compilation, "Hits 50" is fine, but it's the rarities that make it essential. On the balance, I'd say it's the best-ever collection from that perspective, but it's not without its flaws. Previously, I owned The Who: The Ultimate Collection, also a 2-CD set, and here's what you'll gain and lose in comparison:

First, you pick up twelve tracks, including several rarities:
Zoot Suit
The Last Time
Dogs
The Relay
Postcard
Slip Kid
Trick Of The Light
Don't Let Go The Coat
Athena
It's Hard
Real Good Looking Boy
It's Not Enough
Be Lucky

But then, you lose six tracks, all from albums you probably own:
A Legal Matter
My Wife
Pure and Easy
Long Live Rock
The Real Me
Sister Disco

Sounds good, but then a few of the otherwise non-LP tracks are presented in mono instead of stereo, which could be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your perspective:
Call Me Lightning
I'm A Boy
Magic Bus

The latter track, while mono, is also the rarely collected long version, and the version of "The Kids Are Alright" included is about 15 seconds longer than most versions thanks to an extended instrumental section starting at about 2:00.... Also, "Boris The Spider" is remixed, and "Won't Get Fooled Again" and "Who Are You" presented in their single edits, which isn't a problem if you own the studio albums...

So tough choice if, like me, you have limited time, space, and or cash. I look forward one day to buying a better "rarities" collection compiled with the hardcore fan in mind, but for now "Hits 50" is the best we got.

Failure at remastering showed while playing on my custom Subaru Outback sound system.

I would never buy this CD set if I had known how bad the remastering would be. It sounded like I was listening to AM radio back in the 50's and 60's! Vocals were hard to distinguish and had an over amount of bass. Whoever remastered this must have had hearing loss. I played my originals LP's on my home system to remind me of great this music was when originally recorded on vinyl. What a difference. These are only good for hanging from my rear view mirror or shotgun target practice!

This is the best Who collection ever assembled - EVER. Its missing a few that i would have liked to see on here, but all in all its terrific. I have a massive Who collection and I had to buy CDs just to get the rare tracks that were originally on singles or shows, such as 'Relay' or 'Join Together'. Not only are thosectracks found on this great disc, but the Bass in 'Eminence Front' is very alive and up front like I've never heard before. This disc also features a few tracks I've never even heard B4, and a new track 'Be Lucky', which is a good new track that sounds like classic Who.
No dissapiintments here whatsoever !!

i will start by saying i love the who i bought this disc for one track the long version of magic bus.for the more casual fan this set the 2 cd version is a great overview. if you buy it beware my insatiable need for every mix and version is contagious

Pretty good collection of 50 years of the Who! My only gripes, no John Entwistle's "My Wife" from Who's Next? The last couple of songs on CD number 2, newest songs, I could do without. Would have been better to fill up the CD with more from Who's Next, etc. Overall, pretty happy with this purchase.
